Last night I got a pair of speakers for my car. Here are the specs:

6.5" Kenwood 1680ie
  • 2-way car speakers for 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" locations (pair)
  • mica-injected polypropylene woofer cone with urethane surround
  • PEI semi-dome tweeter with Image Enhancer 2 baffle
  • power range: 2-40 watts RMS (240 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 35-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • mounting tabs for use in 6-3/4" openings
  • top-mount depth: 1-7/8"
  • warranty: 1 year
My intention is for them to replace the factory speakers in the front door. I only have a 2 channel amp (powering the sub) so they will be powered by my HU, a Panasonic CQC-9901U for the time being. My g/f told me that if I wanted to return them to get something better that her feelings wouldn't be hurt cause she'd rather I have what I want than just keep it because she picked 'em out. She told me she wanted to get me a pair of Infinities (I don't know which ones) but they were like $40 more and well, we're just pretty damn broke.

So I found these online, and was wondering which ones were better:

Infinity Reference 6012i
  • 2-way car speakers for 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" locations (pair)
  • Plus One+ poly woofer cone with high-roll rubber surround
  • rotating UniPivot silk dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-60 watts RMS (180 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 53-21,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • Intermount III mounting system for fit in 6-3/4" openings
  • top-mount depth: 1-15/16"
  • warranty: 1 year
Clearly I'm on a budget, and I'm open to any other suggestions that are in the same price range. Also a 4 channel amp is a future possibility, so suggestions for those if needed would be helpful too.

Thanks!

Sort of related, but you'll probably need adapter brackets up front for the speakers. Stock Toyota 6.5" have a large non-removable bracket around them. You can get them on eBay. I don't know about the rears, I have stockers in the rear.

Generally when you order aftermarket speakers especially good ones like Infinities they come with a bracket that allows them to be mounted in most cars. This is just my opinion, take it or leave it:
I'm somewhat new to the modding scene as I just got my celica not too long ago and I still have a lot to learn. But I've been playing with car audio for a long time (had a suburban and a tahoe - noise boxes biggrin.gif) and my loyalties when it comes to speakers lies with Infinity. They are a little pricier but they sound absolutely beautiful. I have a full set of Kappas and I haven't blown them once (believe me, I've tried). But if extremely loud music is not your goal, referrences make some of the best sounding music you'll ever hear come out of a car. Just my 2 cents.

"Hmm. Ask him if he's the dragon reborn."
"What?"
"Just do it."
".......He said yes."
"Tell him you are not darklings. He should open up."
".......Sweet. Thanks."
"No problem."

I don't know much about car audio (and I really don't care) ..but I have a set of Infinity Reference 6012i speakers for the front and another set for the back of my celica. They're ok. Not as much bass as I would like but they sound clearer than stock speakers at high volumes. Not bad for the price, I guess. ..and yes, you will have to make custom brakets for the front speakers.

Cool, I think I may return the other ones and order the Infinities then... Crutchfield will apparently ship me mounting brackets for my car at no extra charge. Gotta love that. smile.gif

The Infinities on Crutchfield are on sale for $45 marked down from $99 though, that's why I was looking at them, they're actually less on sale than the Kenwoods I have now were.

just be carefull, the infinities you posted, are 60 Watts RMS, if you're gonna power them via HU, that may not be a good idea. most Head units are 25 RMS 50 watts peak, so the HU will have a hard time with these speakers.

^ That's great advice. Now I'm actually thinking that what I'll do is keep these and upgrade later when I can afford to pick up an amp. I think the Kenwoods might be better matched to my HU until then.

Silk dome tweeter. If ya ain't listening to jazz/instrumental/classical forget about it, you will blow the tweeter pretty quick.
