After getting beyond OT in this, we need a place for the FLIPS of 6GC to interact. Everyone is welcome to talk about anything thats allowed under the rules. Pictures are welcome and stuff.

I'm not... but I was born there... and schooled in Escrima. Anyway... the pinoys I knew always tended to think of "flip" as a derogatory term... kinda like jap or gook...

not me i think being called flip is all G. but then the life style here in hawaii is way different than in the mainland. but yeah 100% pure breed flip right here. born in the P.I. and raised in the HI.
love my car.........and yes i do get the occasional people who are what you guys call your third leg. just deal with it and move on.

Filipinos is sort of looked at as an epidemic. you can find flips everywhere. from iraq to greece and even in china.........europe...........and here in the states. i can go on with the location s of flips around the world.

I use to be similar, to me personally FLIP is simply a shortened version of Filipino. I know of Filipino's that can't even spell Filipino or Philippines. I still prefer to be called Filipino instead of Flip, but with friends especially American Born ones, its fine. I'd rather be called Flip than see them butcher the proper words.

BTW I want to learn escrima, Ive always thought it would be cool as can be to wield two retractable batons in replacement for the fighting sticks.

Flip... has multiple meanings... both positive and negative. It's an acronym. Its Original meaning was "F*cking Little Island People" coined during the WWII pacific campaign. Anyway... i'm neutral on the topic. Huzzah!

soo quick question... on tests like those state exams and what not... do you guys put... asian american... or pacific islander? eh? hahah i got stumped the first time i saw that in like 8th grade er something

...im from northshore chicago area... lotsa filipinos.. and i go to UIC where filipinos make up like half the population of students...

and the term flip... not really used around here that much... i think only with the fobby filipinos around here...i dont think they like me that much... but when i went to high school (niles north) there was like only maybe 12-15 filipinos in my grade? not much compared to our sister/rival school where theres like 10x that.... yea bunch of us filipinos here are white washed...but i still love that chicken adobo!

I put Pacific Islander, I prefer to be called that instead of Asians. But there are times where calling yourself part of the asian community is easier on the tongue.

nowadays, "filipino" has become its own category under background. ive seen it....

im 3/4, but i would rather disassociate myself. i find that i more relate to my minute caucasian side. not that im racist or anything. i think filipinos are cool, but i HATE how they are so cliquey. so much in fact, thats one of the reasons why i seperate myself. in school, i couldn't hang with the flips because they would all talk tagalog as if it were cool. i cant speak a word of it and hated how that segregated me. why should i have to learn how to speak it just to fit in.

number 2 reason is that they are all gossipy. half of the time i felt like saying "mind your own gd business" or "i really dont care what happened to so and so"

the fact that every flip family thinks of every other filipino as "family" is cool but to an extent. especially when they start looking for you to do favors for them. you cant do one or two good things without them walking all over you, starting to expect that is the "norm". then you can't really back down, because they will make it sound like you're the bad person.

i dunno if that makes any sense, but thats my 2

The reason why most of the Flip family that migrated in the west thinks of every Filipino as family is because their real family is 100,000 miles away from them and they don't really have their whole family here to celebrate any special occasions like Xmas or w/e. So they call on their friends to celebrate with themand treat them as family. I personally don't like the "favor attitude" of the Filipinos. I think that is one of the most irritating traits of a filipino, but I know other races that do the same thing... I scratch your back, you scratch mine.

just my opinion...

I've been living in the US for about 4 1/2 years now and migrating from the Philippines, I could relate to what you guys said about Filipinos about being cool and jerks at the same time.

One of my few friends whom is also a Filipino immigrant, I know him for 3 yrs now, just called me yesterday and asked me a favor if I could lend him my car because it was his girlfriends anniversary or whatever. His Corolla CE needs to have a brake replacement that's why he was asking me a favor. --- The funny thing is this is not the first time he asked me if he could borrow my car, he even asked me one time to pick up his mom from work because he himself is at work. I then realized too that everytime he calls, it's always about doing favors, which obviously got me agitated now whenever he calls.

I mean this guy is my friend but still there's a side of him that I really don't consider "good breeding." I'm not saying that I'm perfect and saying this made me realize that I myself was like that too a couple of times. But to say because "he is Filipino" I think has something to do with it since we as Filipinos have experienced it here or back in our country and it is a way of life that we were accustomed to.

Now I try to watch my actions and blend in the American way because, it is a fact that I am in America, my car has become my inspiration to work to the very best i can without stepping on anybody.

To end this up, I learned that it is not about the race which defines a person, there are assholes in every race, though some stereotypes can be true and it is hard to differentiate yourself from that unless you really get to know the person.

Your hardcore letting a friend borrow your car, I won't even let some drive my car. True, theres a line where the favors have to stop. I rarely do favors unless they give back. If the person simple talks to me for help everytime, I stay away and avoid them.

If a person is your friend and always ask for help, you dont have to stay away and avoid him. You can always say NO. wink.gif There only so much you can help a person, right? As for lending cars... HELL NO!!! I don't even let my brother use my 6GC and I'm very hesitant of my wife using it that's why I brought her an Altima. biggrin.gif Tell them to take the bus like we all did when we didn't have our cars. biggrin.gif

People can say their your friend only to ask for favors... saying no will usually have them avoiding you as well since you won't do crap for them. lol.

hahah dang all that is very true.... i do get annoyed of is that "family" thing... i dunno about you guys but around here...some filipinos here are just ignorant or stupid... like in highschool... there was a group of filipinos who ONLY hung out with filipinos.. now i dont really care who they hang out with... but when they start talking poop, crap, shiiiet about me in tagalog when im right there and i do still fully understand tagalog...NO that does not work for me...they thought i was too good for them cuz only like 15% of my friends are filipino and that i dont speak tagalog in school thats in america where we speak english...sorry but it bugs me haha they can talk all they want just dont gotta talk crap... i wouldnt of cared a cent if they didnt talk any crap.. but thats all they doo they just talk and talk especially if u dont hang with them...plus they were fobs...and they looked uber AZN THUG. which is a helll nah.

fobs = fobolous laugh.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif

kidding aside... i do agree that it is very rude talking in your own language when there's somebody else who can't understand and speak it. I hang out with a bunch of filipinos as well but we don't talk in tagalog whever we hang out with other races. If somebody does speak tagalog, we always remind them that we have company. Its just how we were thought when we were kids. We sometimes talk in TAGLISH or whatever you call it coz not all of us are very fluent in english. I guess the group of flips who hung out with only flips feel more secure and understood when they're around flips. The worst part of being a fob is when you're trying real hard to look not one and blend in but ends up looking and acting worst thus looked uber AZN THUG.
Do I make sense here????

yea ya make sense... i understand they feel secure its theyre comfort zone... but they got teh mentallity that they think theyre better then everyone else and they talk crap about the other filipinos who arent with them...and non filipinos... i know this case is prolly not the same for everyone but its just stupid... it goes back to all that gossip and "chismis" crap...they just gotta realize...theyre in america.. and they cant go talkin crap when someone can still understand them..

ANYWAYYYYY sorry about the ranting.....

where is everyone from? parents from?

That's why I'm having problems with my in-laws... I just don't understand them sometimes.... coz they speak ilocano laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Take it like a man, its only a 12-14 Hour flight from Detroit to Nagoya, and 2-3 Hour from Nagoya to Manila. I watched every cheesy movie they played. I have done this travel 4 times. No DS/PSP or any handheld gaming device. I rocked my CD player with about 30 CDs to choose from and a dozen Lithium batteries.

BTW my Family on both sides have been in Cavite for many generations.

Ok, i'm gonna post. I'm flip and i'm somewhat proud of it. Some advice though especially over here where i'm at, don't ever speak some kind of filipino language in public places such as the mall, wal-mart, or wherever there may be alot of people at. All I know is that the locals, as in born and raised here, get all irritated because the ones that speaking flip can also speak or should be able to speak more english since their in the U.S. If you don't, chances are the locals will mouth you off and call you dumb filipino or "bok bok" or even FOB. So yeah, just keep it to yourself or at home. Lol, unfortunely, I can't even speak any of it. I can only understand a bit, that's it. So those who can, I give you guys props for that matter. thumbsup.gif

Who had the traditional Filipino Christmas? We partied with 50+ people from 4PM on the 24th till 8PM on the 25th. People left from 2AM and came back around 3PM Christmas. Tons of food, kids running around participating in chessy games they won moola in, Aunts and Uncles tearing it up with the Karaoke, Drunk uncles.. well Alcoholic uncles that never get drunk playing tong its. And some aunties playing bingo. How was your Christmas? Oh Yea, our Santa Claus was brown, just like every year! HAHAHA

Merry Christmas / Maligayang Pasko!

props to all FIL-AMS/FIL-CANS/FIL-Wherever you were born that can speak and understand the native language... wink.gif Its easy to learn a foreign language but keeping the native language in the family is hard. One more thing I hate is when flips that grew up back home and come to Canada or the US and they only stayed here for only half a year and they claim that they can't speak the language anymore, how ridiculous can you be? Flips that were born in the US/CAN try to learn it, so why would you forget it?

Each of my family members can speak or at least understand the language. Even the kids born here can understand it.

Though we're a very mixed race, everything we do is distinctly Filipino. Our identity almost always shows wherever we are. Confused about your identity? Don't know how Filipino you really are? Well, here's a not-so-scientific way to find out. See if you'll find yourself nodding your head more than you're shaking it. You might find that these 101 things are a lot truer than if you took out your birth certificate.

You point with your lips.
You eat using hands and you have it down to a technique.
Your other piece of luggage is a balikbayan box.
You nod upwards to greet someone.
You put your foot up on your chair and rest your elbow on your knee while eating.
You think that half-hatched duck eggs are a delicacy.
You have to kiss your relative on the cheek as soon as you enter the room.
You're standing next eight big boxes at the airport.
You collect items from hotels or restaurants "for souvenir."
You smile for no reason.
You flirt by having a foolish grin in your face while raising your eyebrows repeatedly.
You go to a department store and try to bargain the prices.
You use an umbrella for shade on hot summer days.
You scratch your head when you don't know the answer.
You never eat the last morsel of food on the table.
You like bowling.
You know how to play pusoy and mah-jong.
You find dried up morsels of rice stuck on your shirt.
You prefer to sit in the shade instead of basking in the sun.
You add an unwarranted "H" to your name, i.e. "Jhun," Bhoy," "Rhon."
You put hands together in front of you as if to make a path and say "excuse, excuse" when you pass in between people or in front of the TV.
Your middle name is your mothers maiden name.
You like everything imported or "state-side."
You check the labels on clothes to see where it was made before buying.
You hang your clothes out to dry.
You are perfectly comfortable in a squatting position with your elbows resting on your knees.
You consistently arrive 30 minutes late for all events.
You always offer food to all your visitors.
You say "comfort room" instead of "bathroom."
You say "for take out" instead of "to go"
You say "open" or "close" the light.
You ask for a "pentel-pen" or a "ball-pen" instead of just "pen."
You asked for "Colgate" instead of "toothpaste."
You refer to the refrigerator as the "ref" or "pridyider."
You say "kodakan" instead of take a picture.
You order a McDonald's instead of "hamburger" (pronounced ham-boor-jer)
You say "Ha" instead of "What."
You say "Hoy" get someone attention.
You answer when someone yells "Hoy."
You turn around when someone says "Psst"
You say "Cutex" instead of "nail polish."
You say "he" when you mean "she" and vice versa.
You say "array" instead of "ouch."
Your sneeze sounds like "ahh-ching" instead of "ahh-choo."
You prefer to make acronyms for phrases such as "OA: for over acting or "TNT" for, well, you know.
You say "air con" instead of "a/c" or air conditioner.
You say "brown-out" instead of "black-out."
You use a "walis ting-ting" or "walis tambo" as opposed to a conventional broom.
You use a "Weapons of Moroland" shield hanging in the living room wall.
You have a portrait of "The Last Supper" hanging in your dining room.
You own a karaoke system.
You own a piano that no one ever plays.
You have a tabo in the bathroom.
Your house has too many burloloys.
You have two to three pairs of tsinelas at your doorstep.
Your house has an ornate wrought iron gate in front of it.
You have a rose garden.
You have a shrine of the "Santo Niņo" in your living room.
You have a "barrel man" (you pull up the barrel and you see something that looks familiar. Schwing...)
You cover the living room furniture with bedsheets.
Your lamp shades still have the plastic cover on them.
You have plastic runners to cover the carpets in your house.
You refer to your VCR as a "beytamax."
You have a rice dispenser.
You own a turbo boiler.
You own one of those fiber optic flower lamps.
You own a lamp with oil that drips down the strings.
You have a giant wooden fork and spoon hanging somewhere in the dining room.
You have a giant wooden tinikling dancer on the wall.
You have capiz shells chandeliers, lamps, or placemats.
You have a Mercedes Benz and you call it "chedeng."
You own a huge van conversion.
Your car chirps like a bird or plays a tune when it is in reverse.
Your car horn can make 2 or 3 different sounds.
Your car has curb feelers or curb detectors.
Your car has too many "burloloys" like a Jeepneys back in P.I.
You hang a rosary on your car's rear view mirror.
You have an air freshener in your car.
You have aunts and uncles named "Baby," "Girlie," or "Boy."
You were raised to believe that every Filipino is a aunt, uncle or cousin.
Your Dad was in the Navy.
Your mom or sister or wife is a nurse.
You have a family member or relative that works in the Post Office.
Your parents call each other "Mommy" and "Daddy" or "ma" and "pa."
You have family member that has a nickname that repeats itself, i.e."Deng-Deng," Ling-Ling" or "Bing-Bing"
You put hot dogs in your spaghetti.
You consider dilis the Filipino equivalent to French fries.
You think that eating chocolate rice pudding and dried fish is a great morning meal.
You order thing like tapsilog, tocsilog, or longsilog at restaurants.
You instinctively grab a toothpick after each meal.
You order a "soft drink" instead of a "soda."
You dip bread in your morning coffee.
You refer to seasonings and all other forms of monosodium glutamate as "Ajinomoto."
Your cupboards are full of Spam, Vienna Sausage, Ligo, and Corned Beef, which you refer to as Karne Norte.
Goldilocks means more to you than just a character in a fairy tale.
You appreciate a fresh pot of rice.
You bring your "baon" most of the time to work.
Your "baon" is usually something over rice.
Your neighbors complain about the smell of tuyo on Sunday mornings.
You eat rice for breakfast.
You use your fingers to measure the water when cooking rice.

i was never around a lot of filipinos until college. i do noticed that they are clicky in college.

we have a lot of family here but not a lot of friends we call family. my filipino friends do have a lot of friends they call family and do things with them all the time. thats my story =)~
