I'm not musicaly competent enough to say which one is the best really, but One that always struck me was the one in "wheels of fire" by manowar....freakin' fast riffs and very powerfull song..but the lyrics are corny..awhh the 80's...
the song...solo starts at 2:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MywEoJPTSs This post has been edited by Rayme: Feb 13, 2008 - 10:59 PM -------------------- ![]() -Rémy 02 SiR, 08 250R |

I am musically inclined and to me a solo only is great if it works with the song. all solos to me are great if they flow with the song.
however, listen to Dragonforce "Through The Fire And The Flames" thats some wicked @$$ solos. |

Kissing the shadows - Children of Bodom
Until you have heard this you do not know the purpose of a guitar solo. Although, someone will always say it's a little sweep picking heavy. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and the like are all very good musicians, and can play the guitar very well, but, to me it just sounds like a grade 26 guitar peice, not music. |

Ooooohh so many to choose from!
How about "Hey Joe" by Hendrix. I love the emotion in it! Or maybe Joe Satriani's "Summer Song" (although that doesn't really count cause the whole song is a solo!). |

not trying to bash on anyone but why does everyone always think Hendrix is so great? Hes music was really nothing special. he just had a lot of gimics and was in the right time. I can think of a lot of better guitarists in that time. Clapton was with Cream at the time, and i think he was a lot better and wrote much better music. people say that Hendrix was a visionary in his music. That he was the first person to do a lot of things, and his music was so different for the time. But if i drop acid everytime i picked up my guitar i could come up with some weird and different stuff to. Its a true guitarist that can come up with different sounds and structure and not be messed up all the time.
Just my thoughts, but i really think his music was sloppy and gimicy. |

Hendrix is a bit overrated, you're right about that, but he was probably the most influential and innovative guitarist of his time, yes there were plenty of them back then, but Hendrix hit it big. Just like anyone in the music industry, if you hit it big and you've got talent, your name is known and will be famous or infamous...And about the droppin' acid to come up with some nice weird stuff, you're right, just look at Tony Iommi, he's another GREAT guitarist. |

^ I disagree about Hendrix. I think he was pretty f-ing excellent.
Guitar-wise, I'm all about Jimmy Page/Zeppelin solos; old skool Prince (the solo at the end of When Doves Cry); definitely old skool Metallica, especially off the One album; Santana; some sweet Slash action whether it be GnR or Velvet Revolver; U2 Bullet the Blue Sky (although that's not really a solo but I really think the song is so contingent on the guitar that it should count) and Where the Streets Have no Name for the same reason -------------------- ![]() |

He always plays the same sounding solos. its always at the bottom of the freet bourd and a lot of the songs are in the same key. ill give him that the structure of his solos are always right on, but when your doing the same thing over and over again i would hope that you would get it right. one thing i will give him is that he has Passion in his music. But all passion and no technical is a bad thing. but it can also go the other way, Steve Vi. Al structure, no passion. look at Mark Koffnur( no idea if i spelt that right) the lead singer and guitarist from Dier Straits. Passion, Technical, wicked sounds, fast moving, slow moving. Hes one of the few that i think has it all. Stevie Ray Von is another one. and whats his Face from the Eagles..........i cant for the life of me remember his name, but the lead guitarist for the Eagles has it too. |

I'm a guitarist myself so I think that my opinion is perhaps slightly more valid on these subjects. The thing is that sure, guitarist x might be better than guitarist y, but if their styles are different enough then they can't really be compared. I agree that all of the guitarists you mentioned (except Joe Walsh from the Eagles - man that guy annoys the hell out of me) are all fantastic but they all have their own different styles. Note that this thread is about favourite solos, not who is the best guitarist (threads of which I think are totally moronic). BTW, I learned to play guitar by listening to ridiculous amounts of Santana music and trust me, he is way better then you think. It's only his very latest boring pop stuff that is really repetitive. And besides, it's his cool signature sounds and riffs that is why people love him so much. If you find the right way to do something you keep doing it that way ![]() /rant I'm going to see Santana in concert in a few weeks! Yay! |

Sorry gotta roll with stevie ray vaughan..... The style and rhythm he does while he plays is unmatched. I play his songs all the time. Its so hard to play his rhythm but when I get in the flow and play his solos and such its amazing.

I'm kinda surprised no one's said anything about Chuck Berry... I'm so awful with names that I had to open my iTunes just to post yesterday, and drew a blank on his name. But considering he is attributed to being the catalyst and grandfather of Rock n' Roll, I think he definitely deserves some mention here! I know it's somewhat debatable whether he's the grandfather of Rock n Roll or not, but simply put from an historical perspective, he's the one who picked up an electric guitar to play country music on it. And so began the revolution...

Some good ones guys.
I've never really liked Hendrix, his sound anyway, although I do acknowledge (and admire) his talent. It's hard to choose the best solo ever, isn't it? Much easier to just list some that we like. I've always liked the solo from "hotel california". |
