After 3 days of driving the car, my 5sfe tranny blew a hole in itself monday night.

This means i need to:
a.) rebuild my existing tranny ($1500)
b.) Get a 3SGE tranny and put that in ($$)
c.) Jump off a cliff

Well im leaning towards B. The 3sge will bolt up to the 3sgte engine, and it holds more power. I was going to do the tranny swap next summer, but its gotta come sooner now.

Everyone doing the 3sgte swap, start sourcing ur new tranny even if you do have the GT, cuz i never went above 80mph in the car with the 3s and it blew when i was doing 65.

Man, that's really bad luck. frown.gif I've seen a sixth generation GT with the stock tranny and 450+ horsepower that wasn't having any tranny problems.

Anyway, I'd suggest calling a company like Jarco or Storm Performance or Venus Auto and seeing if they can get you a low-miles 3S-GE tranny, because I'm guessing that they'll be able to, and it should be able to take the boost just fine.

If you have $6,000, you can always get a six speed HKS tranny that's designed for the 3S-GE. tongue.gif

This is the reason why I also recommend not using the S54. I've seen that 6th gen using the S54, which Coomer mentioned, on the MR2 boards. I'm wondering if he's still using that tranny (I doubt it). I honestly think that the tranny was rebuilt during the swap.

Super, I may be able to get you a E153 tranny with LSD. PM me and I'll see if my shop still has the tranny.

I already did the swap, that and the 185,000 GT tranny made for bad consequences. Storm Performance is where i bought the engine so im checking there and several other places for it.

DOes ne body kno if the transaxles from the GT are compatible with the 3sge tranny?

Would a 1993 Celica GT-S tranny fit on the ST185 engine?

Yes, it'll work. That tranny mounts up to a 5S-FE in the fifth generation GT-S, so it'll mount up to your 3S-GTE just fine. Like you said though, it's not made to handle boost, so it may not last as long as a different tranny would.

I just checked on car-part.com in the northeast states and there are a few Solara 6 cyl. manual trannys on there starting at 450. This is the thread about that guy who put a V6 in 5th gen:
http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?u...c;f=31;t=004637

The thread is a great read, and he used the solara 5 speed tranny claiming few mods to get it to work with the solara shafts...

Well im getting the GT tranny re-built with a stronger casing, and that should last me until I find a Beams 3SGE tranny. I have a one year warranty on the rebuilt tranny, so if ne thing goes wrong, its paid for.

That sounds good. How much is it costing you for the tranny rebuild?

Well after speaking further with the guy, since its a manual tranny, its only a 6mo warranty, and unless he can find some stronger shafts or w/e it wont be much stronger, but it'll have to do for now...$1500-1700.

Wow! That's an incredible amount of money to pay, since you can get a used 3S-GE tranny for so much less than that, assuming you can find one. Have you tried Toysport and Storm Performance and Jarco and places like that?

Yeah it is alot of money, but there are several factors that are causing me to do this: I need a car...i dont have anything else to drive cuz I sold my Explorer and i need to get to school & work. I've emailed probably 10 different places asking for that tranny and nobody has that one. Its either something pre-1990, or nothing at all. Poor response time will definately cost someone business. I want something with warranty, and buying from a private part eliminates that. This isnt what i wanted to do with my money, but its kinda the only choice I have.

Ah, I understand. I figured that a newer 3S-GE tranny would be easier to get a hold of.

I posted this in the buy/sell forum but will post it here to make sure you see it

Call this number 1.888.221.1440 I got my 3sge trany for 348$ shipped to my door. Its a 93 Jdm 3sge with apprx 30k on it.
You will need to use the bell housing off of the 5sfe tranny though cuz the starter is angled the wrong way on the 3sge to work with the 3sgte. but from the sounds of it you already have that.

hope that helps

My bellhousing has a hole in it, and im going to try to get an SSII or III tranny so that it'll pop right in.
