Okay, i've been searching and cant find anything to answer my question. I know this is probably a repost as i can see it being a common problem. Just point me to one of the links, but i cant find it using the search...

Deal is this: Bought the car, a month later the dude i bought it from, he found the remotes for the alarm. I believe it's factory... With the keyless entry and all. i found the prox sensor, but i cant find the "CPU" of the alarm. I need to find it so that i can re-program the remotes. ANyone know where it is? And how to get to it? Pics would be great!!

I've removed the seats (durring an unrelated event) and it's all carpet...

I can tell that it must be under my dash somewhere, that's where the shock sensor is located. But i cant trace down the wires...

Mine is on top of the ECU and the ECU is located underneath the center dash.

Shouldn't have to unless they are new ones or different ones. it's possible the alram just needs to be reset or it's turned off currently. I can call my guy at Toyota and he can walk you through the diagnostics of it.

You are correct. When I open up the remote control I can see a removable IC which I think was tuned to a specific frequency that matches witht the alarm ECU. Maybe you need to finid out which frequecy ur ECU is tuned to and retune the IC or get a replacement or something. The hole on the ECU is probably just for resetting the ECU ifself, not retuning.

yeah, every remote i've ever programed was like that. i figured it'd be the same way. Thats why i wanna find the "ecu" of the alarm. The lights usually do some lighting up to show that it's synced.

Well, atleast i'd like to try. shouldn't be that hard...

so you haven't found it yet? if it's not beneath the seat, behind the glove compartment or above the ECU, then it must be tucked high up behind the driver-side panels right next to the steering column..

that's usually where most installers would keep them..

My last car's alram ECU was mounted between the steering column and the center console - it's not at all hard to get to and like I said my friend at Toyota will walk you through it over the phone.

i could probably find it if i ever had DAY time to work. that's just the prob though, no place, no light, no nothing.

So i was asking so that i could find it at night, the only safe time to work on my car in my apps. Well, you gotta worry about the "thugs" and "Ganksters" and everyone else that listens to rap music... but they can't evict me from my appts so i'm not really worried about them.

because i have one installed already.

Besides, i can upgrade features. but all i gotta do is push 2 buttons simotaniously, or i can RE INSTALL the entire damn thing.

if i cant find a button, what makes you think i would be able to find all the wires?

Why would i want a new one?

Dude my old factory one was the sh*t! I had set the sensativity so perfectly that exhausts wouldn't set it off but just barely leaning or touching the car would. It did this cool little warning beep and if the person didn't stop it would go off easier than it took to get the warning. Plus it had a hood pin sensor and gas cap door sensor. I wouldn't have changed a thing [well I didn't actually]

i thought the factory alarms are only to open and close the door, the box thats under my seat has this little switch the goes from 1 to 10 to adjust the sensitvity. where should it go so it would be very sensitive.

thats your proximity sensor or shock sensor. It has colorfull wires that go no where right?

Yeah... Mine is under my steering wheel. Now my CPU for the alarm, IDK. I'm guessing it's farther next to or above my wheel INSIDE my dash. Guessing. But try seeing in there when it's pitch dark outside and you have only a lighter to light the way.... kindasad.gif

That's gonna be different for each car and each of Toyotas diff alarm systems they installed. You have the one with the box under the seat - I can't vouch for that one. I turned mine up to the second to last setting, any higher and it would just randomly go off. You're gonna have to play with it. Turn it up a little at a time untill it gets too sensative then roll it back a notch or two.
Be aware that some Toyotas only came with keyless entry that acts and looks just like an alarm but won't actually go off. The way to tell is get in the car, lock the doors with the remote, wait 30sec [it's shorter but wait this long just in case] then unlock the door manually and open it - the alarm should go off. If in doubt you can call a dealership with the VIN# and they will tell you which system you had. Mine was the securikey one where the remote and key are one peice [ugly as hell tho] - that one was the sh*t. Then again I had permavin and some other antitheft options too - looks like somebody went all out. biggrin.gif
Hope this helps

my factory "alarm" was the worst thing ever
and it was the security one cause it would randomally go off
then randomly break on me
then when someone broke my window? didnt go off
my advice is look into an aftermarket alarm
protects your car and 2 way systems keep you in touch

Obviously something was wrong with yours - mine worked better than my friend's $400 name brand alarm [except he had window control and remote start] and better than my current Autopage. You should check out your factory one and weigh your needs vs your alarm.
Spolski is right - there are better alarms out there obviously - it just may not be necessary for your needs [garage kept etc.]

mine has a shock sensor,it's tuned 1 notch from max. if i bump the car it gives a warning beep, it i BUMP the car then it goes off. It's all about where and how the shock sensor wires are placed.

Need more sensors. Look for inputs on the ECU and finding a setup diagram for your p/n and then the upgraded one ['98-'99?]. See what works with what you know?
Or just get an aftermarket one.
