Alrighty guys, that time in a 6GC life to go ahead and do an engine rebuild. Need some ideas for how much one may cost, i am assuming around 3k or so. I'm just gonna keep it simple.
I did call a couple companies, one company says that they work for NASCAR and would mod out the engine to an extreme... but they want 6k. I can't remember the details one what they said they would do, i should have a pen and paper next time heh. Anyway. Ideas people? Thanks ! -------------------- You say you don't understand how we go dumb, but have you ever been where i'm from?

I can not do any performance mods legally here in California really. So i just simply need a rebuild bcuz i need a daily driver car for at least 3 more yrs.

You really only need to rebuild your head. You don't really need to rebuild the entire block. There's someone on the buying forum that's selling the head all rebuild for like 250.
My mechanic friend quoted me 800 to rebuild my 5sfe... |

QUOTE(_mikeE @ Apr 5, 2008 - 12:26 PM) [snapback]661631[/snapback] You really only need to rebuild your head. You don't really need to rebuild the entire block. There's someone on the buying forum that's selling the head all rebuild for like 250. My mechanic friend quoted me 800 to rebuild my 5sfe... Your rings and bearings are PROBABLY ok [they tend to last on the 5S], so this is most likely good advice. However, you still want to do the front and rear main seals, along with the oil pump and pan. I would also suggest replacing your hoses, and don't forget the timing belt [and water pump if it hasn't been changed recently]. As far as the head, it all depends who did it. If Joe average did it in his garage, IMO stay away. If it was done professionally in a shop, assuming it comes with everything, and the cams already set up, sure, why not? Or you can just drop [or pay someone to] in a remanned engine. -------------------- ![]() |

I went to several local shops for my 5sfe rebuild too. The reputable builders around here wanted $2300 on the low side up to $4200 on the high side for "just the rebuild" to stock. No performance upgrades or performance machine work. How do you get $800?? I wish I had that price.
Plus...I got 173,000 miles. Car runs perfect but I blow smoke at start up...(bad valve stem seals)...anyway how confident would you be in my engine block not having to be rebuilt cause they last long? How long is that? |

That's because
1- It's a friend of his, so most likely a [at least slightly] cheaper price 2- $800 Is probably to replace all the gaskets, rehone the cylinder walls and stick in new bearings and rings. Not necessarily a bad thing, I've done it before many times [I usually add a few of the things below as well]. The "builders" you talked to will most likely hot tank everything, fully inspect and mic everything, recut the valve seats, replace the valve guides, possibly replace the pistons and bore the block, possibly resurface the head, as well as everything listed above [and whatever I forgot to mention]. -------------------- ![]() |

My car runs great at 173K, if I don't have to replace the pistons, rods, and head internals (if they're checked out and still good) then I can just basically do this: 2- $800 Is probably to replace all the gaskets, rehone the cylinder walls and stick in new bearings and rings.
[I usually add a few of the things below as well] -- what are some of those things? This post has been edited by 6G96GT: Apr 6, 2008 - 6:38 PM |
