How cool is this?
Nin just released a new album, and can download the whole thing for free, legally through them!

Nope. Your thinking of the Ghosts 1-4 instrumentals they put out a month or two ago. This just came out today and is a full album with vocals.

You can stream the whole thing here if you just want to check it out without downloading.

I doubt that, this world revolves around money. How is NIN making any money on this?

Was it Radiohead or Coldplay that allowed people to pay whatever they wanted for their album (usually zero dollars) and now they're like it was stupid we're not doing it ever again.

This is a stepping stone for a brand new music industry. Bands are starting to market directly to their fans and showing everyone that you no longer need to be ripped off (as an artist) by the record labels.

So how is nin making money off this? Well, when they put out the Ghosts instrumental album a few months ago, they had an option to buy a super delux autographed copies priced at 300bucks each (came with a huge book and was a really nice collectors item). They sold out in one day, and the band made about 750,000$ just off that (in one day). For this album they will also have a physical version you can buy, merchandise and a tour.... but besides that, I think they are officially saying "this ones on us".

As far as what RaidoHead did.... well it was a good idea, but POORLY implemented. They had a very confusing website setup, and if you wanted to pay them anything, you had to do it in pounds instead of dollars. This was a bit confusing for me and other people that did it.

That's really cool - thanks for posting it.
Here's hoping this one's good. I haven't liked anything they've done since the 15 different remix versions of Downward Spiral. frown.gif I used to be such a huge fan of their stuff back in the late 80's/early 90's. I'm not sure what happened to them. kindasad.gif

NIN tours a lot and from what I heard, bands make more money touring than from record sales.

Why do we need to? The dollar is the business capital of the world.

Is this album any good? Anybody DL it yet?

I know what you mean. They kind of changed direction a bit since then... but... you didnt check out the fragile then? It was probably one of their best albums along with downward spiral.

Why should I? I never had to pay for anything in pounds. Since you live in the UK you probably have to deal with pounds, dollars and euros all the time, thats why you would know it off the top of your head and i would have to look it up.

I bought it and maybe gave it a cursory listen but perhaps I'll have to go back and check it out. Thanks for the tip.
Broken and Pretty Hate Machine were the style I loved. Downward spiral had some of their best songs ever but on a whole it wasn't as strong as PHM IMO - plus the 15 remix albums that came after got extremely tiresome [Never was that huge of a fan of Closer that I wanted to hear it reiterated that many times - I did however love that remix of Reptile - Reptilian - now that's good industrial biggrin.gif ].
Now I feel pumped to get home and DL this one - fingers crossed - curse you work firewall, curse you.

Can't stream anything I'm at work.

As far as the "text book response" I'm assuming thats the whole I'm American nothing else matters. Eh I just don't need to know it. The only time I ever do business over seas is buying off GT4oc.com.

I'm listening to it right now (much to the chagrin of one of my coworkers but oh well I listen to her crappy music day in and day out)

It's not too shabby. Usually new stuff has to grow on me. I must be getting old. Then again I'm listening on SUPER crappy computer speakers - but I'm burning it and look forward to hearing it on NOT super crappy speakers in my car in about an hour.

Ok. My review of the album...

1st listen... its ok
2nd listen... not bad
3rd listen... great!

The album is more like yearzero then it is downward spiral or the fragile, but still a good. You really have to listen to the whole thing in full, instead of skipping around tracks.
