hey guys. i will soon be painting my aftermarket rims. right now i have my stock rims back on. i was wondering if i would be able to remove the tires by myself to make painting easier. the tires are basically bald so i was planning on deflating each tire and maybe start hacking away at it with an axe or something.
is this a good idea? anyone else done it? i know i can get it done at a shop but if its easy doing it myself i can save like 20 bux. |

cant you use like a screwdriver to un-mount the tires??? it taking out a seal. well i havent tried myself...........

Yeah, Im not sure if it would be a lot of fun to cut a tire with an or saw. As far as it being a danger, as long as its deflated and the bead is broken it shouldnt be a problem. But it would be alot quicker to hook it up to a tire machine and do it that way.

you really want to do it yourself
get one of those bolt cutters, to cut the wire frame in the edges, after that sould be easy. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I hardly log in anymore, last login Today Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOL

but common, really, to hack up a tire just to paint it (saving $35) then how many hundred for 4 new tires  Not to mention if you wail on it like that your' bound to get hurt... Just run it down to discount tire, they charge like $35 for all 4 (well they did for me when i last changed rims, just swaping rim to rim) then i had to pay extra for air, lube, and new tire nozzles  it was only $60 bucks though... ($5X.XX)

not a good idea. those bands in tires are under stress even when the tire is deflated. id hate to see you cut a band and have it lash out at you like a rabid dog... i mean, try it
 just set up a camera so we can see what happens...

You're kidding yourself if you think you can remove a car tire with relative ease... Tire shops don't pay thousands of dollars for a tire removal machine for nothing...

tin snips would be the safest (keep in mind i didnt say smartest) with some good leather gloves and some saftey goggles prolly wouldnt hurt either. but a tire shop would be smartest. dont wanna risk rashin up those rims.

I work at a tire shop... if you wanna drive up to livermore I'll dismount for you for free. I don't think you know how hard it's gonna be to get them off otherwise. I can take them all off in 5 minutes with a machine. lol

Wal-Mart will do it for free...or 3 a peice. depends on if ya know the guy, or if they are in a hurry they will pop them off for free, they did for me

If you hack your old tires off yourself, how do you plan on getting your new tires on once your rims are painted? if you're gonna go somewhere to have the tires mounted and balanced properly (which you REALLY should) you might as well see if they'll dismount the old tires for you as well. Even if you have to pay 20 bucks, isn't your time and safety worth it?

IF I had to dismount a tire without a machine, my tools of choice would be a shovel for loosening the beads from the wheel, and the about 5-6 crow bars and 2-3 friends to help you hold all the crow bars. it'll probably scratch the hell out of the wheel though. you'll also need a valve core remover, which I saw at walmart the other day for like $4. plus about 2-3 hours of time to get them all off.

You won't get the tire on the rim like this but this actually does work to break the bead loose. Don't actually drive on the rim though and it only works if you have a stock size wheel and tire. if not for safety, do it to save your wheels, all the self removeal options post a risk of danaging the wheel, just have a shop do it.

LOL! I've never seen that one... I kinda want to try that at work next time we have a really stubbon tire that won't seat the beads. (like when people try to put like 205's on like a 9 inch wheel  )
