Hello, I'm a newbie. I recently (like 2-3 months ago) bought a 95 Celica ST. Its damn enjoyable to drive but its got fairly high kilometers on it. Yesterday while switching spots in my driveway I was told that it was blowing a bit of white smoke not too much, but enough for me to notice when I turned my head and looked.

My first question: Is this a normal thing to have happen with a high km 7A-FE while starting cold?

The engine and transmission have just under 280,000km.

My next question: How many kms does the average 7A-FE run?

Now when I bought this thing, I was half expecting to replace the drivetrain within a year partly because of how much milage was on it and partly because I like like to take **** apart and modify it.

So my last question is: What fun swaps can I do on a student budget?

As for that one, I don't really know what I want. I like the idea of NA because of quick response and usable power, but I'm kind of addicted to the sound of a turbo. The V6 swap would also be a cool idea but only if I can retain my manual transmission.

Its also pretty hard for me to locate parts considering I have absolutely no idea where to start and where I should source my parts since I no nobody who's actually modified their car for speed. Everything on the eastern side of north America seems to be about show and not go. That being said I know nobody who's swapped/built an engine, just kids with lambo doors and hydraulics. kindasad.gif

So if anyone knows where to get parts in southern Ontario, that knowledge would be greatly appreciated aswell.

thats probably valve guide seals going out. is there a bluish tint in teh smoke? as for swaps, the 4A-GE or 4A-GZE would be a fun swap. it will bolt right in to your motor mounts

Wow, 6k, thats a huge. I guess after installation it would cost that much but I always thought it would be the best for the price to fun ratio. I dunno, it seems like every other car on the roads around here is the new Camry or the new Civic.

However, yeah, the 4A-GE has been in my mind since before I purchased the car. Like the moment I realized I was looking at a car with an A engine, it just all made sense to get the silvertop or blacktop and make a frightningly high RPM N/A build.

But the only issue I have is availability of parts, especially since all the fun 4A-GE tuners are all doing it for the AE86 and they're doing it in japan.

Hahaha out of curiousity, and not because this is a viable option whatsoever, how much do you think it would cost for a Formula Atlantic 4A-GE or to even build something close to being as monsterous?

Hahaha damn. Oh well, I cant say I really want one anyways. Like it WOULD be nice if one were just dropped in my lap but it would never pass emissions and every AE86 tuner in my area would be trying to jack my car, just so they can stare at it and drool.

I think there's something wrong with those guys, because a lot of them are all too willing to pay that much money for one. smile.gif

Has anyone ever tried making a 7A-GE hybrid for the celica? I know there's a lot of AE86 drifters doing this to extract as much torque as they can from an A engine but I've never heard it done to a celica so I was wondering if that was an option (especially since picking up a used 16V 4AGE would be pretty easy and cheap)

I've never seen a car not do it, My car still does it fresh out of a full belt change/service and it's only got 77,000 KMS (not miles) on it especially if the air is cold outside.
When you start your car drive straight away, don't sit there idling, engines idle inefficiently when they're cold, once your temperature gauge is up to half way stop your car and check your exhaust it should stop smoking///// if it's still smoking then your car may be in need of a tune up

Actually I think a tune up IS probably in order since it smells like its running rich or burning something. I'll take the plugs off tonight and see what's up. Hopefully they're just ****ty and full of carbon and the airfilter is clogged because as it stands thats the best case scenerio.

Well the best case scenerio is that it explodes but I have enough money to replace it with a silvertop that I happened to find just before it exploded. So it would be out of commission for like, 2 days.

Took the plugs off, they look pretty new (since the electrode looks pretty square still) so the previous owner must have changed them before he sold me the car, however they are not metal colored, they are covered in something and look white-ish. Air filter looks pretty clean and new, no issues there.

However once I did all this, I took it for a spin, backed up from my driveway onto the road and a big white plume of smoke came out. This was the only time it smoked during the entire ride.

I still have no clue what's wrong with it but I've never seen a car put out that much smoke after starting and its only done it a few times. I'll just try to ignore it for now and save up for a swap anyways.
