I don't mean any disrespect to you west coast 6GC'ers out there,
but the more I read about your George Orwellian regulations on
that side of the country, the more I'm I sit here in disbelief.

I mean, California brought us the-ever-memorable Surfin' USA,
The acid soaked Hippie Movement - Tune in - Turn On - Drop Out,
and every other laid-back, pot laced theme you could think of.
Yet, you can't do anything with your car or they'll take it away?

I was just reading this story online (with photos) of dudes who had
their cars taken away and crushed by "the man". Needless to say,
they were Toyotas and Hondas. Dudes who were doing, say, 20
over the speed limit and were deemed "street racers"...

Dude, if that was happening near Detroit, you'd just hear assault
rifles and see the National Guard coming in. It'd make the '67
riots look like a practice round. Every Hillbilly in the land would
be taking to the streets like road warrior. With giant stickers that
said "MODDED" plastered on their cars.

As much as I'm a history buff, I'm clueless as to how this took
root..and who allowed it to happen. It's so over-the-top, I can't
even wrap my head around it.

Somebody fill me in.

LD

wow this happened a long time ago.
No they weren't just doing 20 over.

This was a situation in where, these people were caught racing.
Law is the law. IT IS ILLEGAL. If you want to play be prepared to play. Cops have been impounding and crushing cars since cars were invented.

accept the consiquences of your actions. If you don't like the consiquences, don't break the law

last weekend i was on the way back from working late..i was cruisin in the right lane goin 70 (its like 2:40am) and some guy in a 240 comes up behind me goin at least 80 and slows down n starts tailgatn me. i'm like..dude, its late i wanna get home get off my nuts. so i signal to change lanes and he follows me. i go back to the right lane and he pulls up next to me and starts revvin his engine..LOL. so i speed up from 70 to 75 jus to mess with him and he pulls away goin at 100 while we go into a curved freeway junction. i go back to 70 and right then a CHP pulls past me from the onramp and follows the guy for about 3 miles before he pulls him over.

that night, i felt like the cops were doing their job. there are many times when they are just arseholes and i hate em for it. this is one of the times where the guy truly at fault got what he deserved.

and the street racing thing isn't new, they have been crushin cars like playr said but it was rather recently when they started 'cracking down' on them a lot more because of dumb kids doin 80 on residentials and public streets, killing pedestrians and each other.

and Cali_ST..i totally understand the whole charger chasin your arse. they have em around in riverside and jeesus, if i ever saw one chasin behind me i'd probably shiite myself lol

over here we get cops in Evo's, Scoobies, Lotus Elise' (English Motorways), VW Phaetons W12's, Passat W8's, Golf R32's, Vauxhall Omega MV6s Volvo T5's, you name it they got it, but from what i was reading over there in cali, they weren't only speeding or racing they were stealing other cars or handlng stolen goods, alot of 2.2 vtec preludes and accords were going missing and there engines were funnily found in a eg civics and the like, if your going to be at that kind of thing you deserve all you get, your better off doing it all legit and having nothing to worry about

That's exactly what I was reading/watching. In Michigan, the
cities/state/courts would want you to still have your car so they
can make $$$$$ off you.

We have a thing called the Driver's Responsibility Act. If you
have over 7 points, it's a hundred dollars a year for each
additional point you rack up. So if you had 10 points, you'd
pay $300 a year to keep your license. If you get an impaired
driving, it's $500 a year..and a drunk driving is $1000 a year.
Not having insurance and other infractions also cost $150-$500
a year. This is completely separate from any court costs and is
through the State of Michigan, not the courts. Failure to pay results
in your driver's license being suspended.

Everyone that has ever lived in or been to Michigan knows that
it's impossible to not have a car. There's absolutely no public
transit. So the courts and state are more prone to fining you than
taking your license. If everyone that "screwed up" in Michigan lost
their license or worse - Their car, the unemployment rate would
be even higher. biggrin.gif

The strict laws you're referring to aren't those of the entire West Coast - remember, there's 2 other states here aside from just Cali! Those are specifically California laws; they have the strictest emissions standards in the US, which is what the laws are based on.

Let's not forget the green peace movement and the one I hate the most - the no smoking in public places law that has now spread to NY and Houston [Not Texas - just Houston].
They have a history of limiting the individual's rights for sake of "The common good"

How is Oregon and Washington with their laws?
Do they make you do the "hood popping" on a
standard pull-over? I've spent a lot of time in
Washington and been through Oregon a couple
times. The first time I drove through was at 3 am
about 7 years ago or so. This guy came up to the
car in the darkness and asked, "regular 87?"..I
thought he was a homeless person trying to pump
my gas for money. I snapped, "I'll pump it myself,
Dude!"...He just gave me a funny look and said,
"That's against the law"...He explained and I
apologized. So funny. The scenario is burned into
my psyche.

Yeah, Death, the smoking thing wouldn't last two
seconds here, either. I've seen it in New York..even
upstate New York. It's put tons of bars and bar/grills
out of business in both Buffalo and Rochester. Places
that have been in business for over a hundred years.
First, they told them they had to have an enclosed,
separate smoking room...so the bars spent tons of
money building these rooms with smoke eaters and
what not. A BIG investment. Then, right after they
were done building them, they said "No, Nevermind,
No one can smoke now. Period". Financial ruin 101.

You know - I used to think all the good ole boys driving around Houston with the gunrack and shotgun in the backwindow of their pickup trucks would shut down that stupid law in ahurry if it ever came here [I do regular business in upstate NY so I saw it coming] - suddenly I see no more shotguns in pickup truck windows anymore and here we are wondering if it's gonna be our cars next, and then our lawns, and then our homes.
And then we got a law passed for 10 traffic cameras for "dangerous" intersections - next thing I know they are fcukin everywhere, on every intersection, on freaking 50ft poles pointing in 4 directions and I'm wondering exactly how much can they see now? I called that one too.
I agree with anti street racing laws but our liberties are being jacked and we're doing nothing to stop it. I'm personally ashamed to be compliant.

Yeah, it's true about not being able to pump your own gas in Oregon. IDK what the deal is w/that, but what the end result is that I'm a complete retard when it comes to pumping my own gas. I learned to drive when I lived in NYC, where it's also illegal to pump your own gas. Then I moved here. So I'm kind of a retarded princess when it comes to pumping gas.

As for the hood-popping thing, I know another member on here who lives in OR had that happen to him once I believe, but otherwise, I'd never even heard of it until I saw it mentioned on this board. Granted, I've only had one speeding ticket in my life, and that was about 10 years ago going through eastern Oregon with NY plates. But seriously, I've never even heard of that.

Regarding modding your car here, I think the laws are fairly similar to the laws elsewhere. I don't know specifically what the laws are regarding swapping an engine, but I *think* that as long as you can pass DEQ, you can swap the engine out. Most of the laws are common sense/safety or DEQ related. You can have an aftermarket header and/or intake as long as it'll pass DEQ. You cannot cut your catalytic converter out - you won't pass DEQ. You can have aftermarket exhaust, but it can't be excessively loud and it must be able to get you through DEQ. You can't change the color of your car's exterior lights, for the most part. No neon license plate frames, as it impairs the ability to read the license plate from 50' away. Stuff like that. And all pretty reasonable if you ask me.

Well over here they don't crush your car you can either come up with big $ to get them out of impound or they send them to auction where you can then see some kid driving around your pride and joy.
Our cop cars are the V8 holdens and are either blue and white cruisers or Bright red things used for highway patrol and they stand out like dogs balls.

I had one pass me in the middle of nowhere he was doing at least 135km in a 100km zone ****s me cops can break the law at will.

I have only read the starter of this topic.

I have been searching for a way to fight this. I believe there are many enthusiasts out there who would like to fight this as well. Since the laws are made in America "By the people, For the people", I believe a stand should be taken.

Even the bad things of society such as these "street racers" who do not take into account the innocent lives at stake, the fines we are charged on top of our hobby helps our economy for California. Fines as high as $2500, just for wanting to modify your car is a nice chunk of change to help California as we are in debt and need money for roads and school funding, and so on.

Oh, you laugh because that sounds like I am justifying things? Well did you ever think about people getting to buy trucks because it "looks cool" and paying extra in registering it because it produces more smog? It is like the same thing. California runs by the golden rule, you just get taxed a lil bit.

I never really noticed car modification being too big of a problem, but yeah, clogging up gas stations just to show off should be a no no. If people cleaned up after their messes, didn't do stupid stuff with a chance of hurting someone, then yeah, should be no problem.

They claim street racing is the number 1 cause of death in teens and automobile accidents. That may be true to some degree, although they never take into account how many people die from cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs (yes, the ones the doctor prescribes as many antidepressants and such are addictive).

With this in mind, I think we have a right to modify our vehicles and we can fight it based on the simple fact that other people out there are killing human beings everyday with their products, and they are allowed to get away with it. We just have a passion that much hard work and time is put into.

There has to be a way to fight this.

Yeah i live in San Diego and sometimes i cant stand the cops here. When resident evil extinction first came out me and some buddies hopped in my celi, and went downtown.Of course if any of you live here you know that on a friday night things get crazy down there, you get one of two types of people, the ones that flood the street, and generally act stupid in there intoxication. Or the wealthy to extremely wealthy crowd, who figure they are above everyone because of their social status. This was the weekend after i had installed my muffler, and like i said we were gonna watch a movie, when one of the 05' and up mustang gt's pull up to me with his giant chrome wheels, and super loud exhaust system and starts revving at me hardcore. He friggin revved so loud it set off quite a few car alarms, to say the least, of course there was one of those annoying bicycle cops behind us, who then proceeded to tap on my window and tell me to pull over to the side. Meanwhile the light turns green the mustang now probably laughing his ass off that he escaped by pinning it on another person, drives off the people in the bar across the street start cheering, and after arguing with this dan akroid (sp) looking cop for fifteen minutes, and being late for my movie he gives me a ticket saying im lucky im just getting that,or he would have givin me the 300$ go to court and have them look at my engine bay and make sure the entire car is legal ticket.Plus during the whole thing he tells me "licence and registration...pop ur hood." At the time all i had was a stock engine bay with a red filter on the intake pipe (the previous owner disconnected the stock air box and stuck a filter on the end of the intake pipe converting it to short ram.) and he looks at me and proceeds to give me a "Does the dmv know about this!" and im just like whatever long story short cops are assholes. I have another story about a seperate incident if you guys wanna hear it wink.gif

only? im sorry but if my car parts were found in any other person's car without my knowledge, id not only want to crush their car into itty bitty pieces but i would prolly tie the bastard to the inside of the car while its happening. There's no excuse of having someone else's engine with either no paperwork or receipts whatsoever or with the id number scratched beyond recognition. That just screams shady.

Maybe california is being too harsh with the car crushing and the bluetooth laws, but its definitely improved day to day living. So much that it's hard to find ricers anymore (at least the typical civic, accord, prelude type). It almost seems like they all got wiser and bought better cars so now theres tons of 350z and g35's. There's not even that many evos or stis around. Its also great not seeing people on their phones causing accidents. Im not saying it works 100% of the time but its a dramatic improvement.

lol and if people started retaliating around here with rifles or anything resembling weapons, screw the national guard, they would get shot/snipered/gunned down by both the LAPD and SWAT before they even had a chance to sht bricks. You just don't mess with cops around here.

QUOTE
They claim street racing is the number 1 cause of death in teens and automobile accidents. That may be true to some degree, although they never take into account how many people die from cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs (yes, the ones the doctor prescribes as many antidepressants and such are addictive).

With this in mind, I think we have a right to modify our vehicles and we can fight it based on the simple fact that other people out there are killing human beings everyday with their products, and they are allowed to get away with it. We just have a passion that much hard work and time is put into.

street racing deaths are directly countable. deaths related to smoking, alcohol, or drugs are harder to pin on the actual substance because those are secondary to the main cause of death which would be malfunctioning organs. products when used correctly rarely kill people. thats why we have such strict regulators like the FDA (i know its for food but its all i can think of at this hour) that have to approve things before it goes out. Much hard work is put into the cigarette, alcohol, and especially pharmaceutical companies, much more so than modifying cars. Think of all the jobs people have as scientists, testers, blue collar workers, etc that make up those companies. Not to mention the amount of money the economy rakes in from the profits. If you can prove that the existence of those products produce more harm than good, then you might have a fighting chance. But arguing and saying your right to freedom is being hampered by not being able to modify to your hearts content just won't cut it when there are laws protecting the rest of the country from your potential hazardous modifications.

i know but lets say someone bought an engine, from some guy on craigslist and it turns out that it was stolen but you didnt know until your car gets crushed..i mean isnt that a little unfair?

hrm...well yea. im sure you would be protected. as long as you have proof that you paid for it and can say where you got it from. it takes a court order for your car to be crushed. the owner has tons of opportunities to show any type of documentation. thats why receipts is a must everytime you get parts from a junkyard, the internet, etc. when obtaining huge car parts. the court will be more forgiving if you get a part from a guy that has the same car as the part you bought from him rather than a guy that has a big truck with loose engines sitting in the back.

Up in Canada we only have Crown Vics and Chargers wink.gif

Also, Ontario is the Canadian equivalent to California when it comes to nazi street entiforcement. I've heard of people being pulled over for under hood checks. If you don't have the plaque on your engine or transmission, its considered stolen. If you're caught going 50km/h over the speed limit you are "Street racing" and your car is impounded or crushed. I've also heard about randomly pulling over ricer civics and ****.

On the subject of street racing:
I don't think its very wrong, Its dangerous but there's really nowhere else w can go. Everyone is trying to bust down on street racing but cars keep getting faster and safer, and they keep closing down more and more racetracks.

If governments want to bitch about street racing they should do the smart thing and open more racetracks instead of closing them down so that we have a place where we can go to get all of this out of our system or else they should expect more racing related deaths.

The only real track I think we have up here is Mo-sport and its a good 4 hours drive for me kindasad.gif.

See, I can understand that. But for us here in my city at least. WE have tracks. They may be 45 minutes away, but only $20 to race. Plus you can get a lot of people and bbq or something out there. Its fun. There is small events out there too. AND we are getting a drifting track closer to my city than the 45min drag strip. So for the residents here, there is no excuses. The cops are not too too bad here. But a few can be.

The last time I was pulled over, the cop went right up front and was checking
the grille, I assume looking for an intercooler, he wrote me up for speeding,
(73 in a 65, I got tired of some DA riding in my blind spot so I sped up at exactly
the wrong time) he then informed me my exhaust is illegal. In the state of WA
you must have stock dia from front to rear.

I think it is total bs they spend that much on patrol cars, whats the point a radio is
still faster than a viper. I am not sure why the taxpayers in those areas put up with crap like that, I
would be totally pissed off if I was paying for sports cars for officer oinky.

Yeah we have camaro officers, charger officers, and I think I have seen one corvette officer here. It is total bs. I kind of get upset that they give us a hard time. Not like we can afford a dodge viper or mercedes mclaren. that's what they need to understand.

ontario is pretty bad... here is how we ended up with police impounding cars on the spot, suspending licenses on the spot all with a minimum $2000 and maximum $10,000 fine

head of toronto police always wanted a law like this to crack down on 'street racing'. initially, the bill was really to fight street racing, but it was rejected by congress.

then one night 2 young guys killed a cab driver. all the media wrote about how the 2 young guys were recklessly street racing and how the poor cab driver just immigrated here. basically the media made a sappy story for the cab driver and made the 2 young kids look like ruthless murderers. they were sentenced to house arrest and everyone was outraged.

that was when the bill really took off. the public was even all for it. and congress was going to pass the bill to fight REAL street racing..

then JUST before the bill passed, the toronto police head dude added the clause about how a cop can stop ppl for going 50 over and for other traffic infractions that have nothing to do with street racing... all w/o the public knowing... basically he wanted more power

then JUST after the bill was passed, new evidence surfaced about the tragic accident with the cab driver. turns out cab driver was drinking and did something wrong to cause the accident. all the 2 young guys were doing was speeding slightly...

can't help but think this was all staged so they coul get this law passed...

i believe they got so much revenue from this law that the toronto police was finally able to purchase a new plane to patrol the highways

i think these cases will finally be reaching the courts soon... hopefully they'll find it unconstitutional and make adjustments

oh, and instead of evos and stis... our police have a civic si... i guess that's gd.. rite? lol

Hahahaha yeah. Wewt for Si.

So are they bringing that 50 thing to court? I sure hope so, the cops in Hamilton are d-bags. We have a 4 lane 80km/h 4 lane highway with median to bypass main st in Hamilton but it goes by a university and because a lot of idiots j-walk across it they turned it into a 40km/h road. You have about 100m to slow down from 80 to 40.... Guess where the cops sit.

So many people have been booked for "street racing" its unfathomable. And not even ricer kids, mostly elderly and 9-5ers. Its by far the stupidest law Ontario has ever passed.
