After driving my celica around for the past couple weeks I have come to the conclusion that I need more power in the car. I was thinking of doing some bolt-ons such as an axle-back exhaust, short ram air intake, and maybe a throttle body spacer. One other thing I just found is a speed chip that is supposed to add a great deal of power.....and maybe a cheap supercharger
the chip ![]() This is a picture of thhe supercharger that I found... ![]() It seems pretty legit and yes I do realize it isn't going to really give me 100hp....but I figure between these four mods that I would be able to net about 100hp. I am pretty excited to see what the celica can do with all the added power it will have, if anyone has experience with these mods advice would be great...... Thanks in advance for any helpful info Sorry I was kidding about all that stuff...what I was really going to say was it is time for an engine swap..... Several days ago I just got my 4th gen 3SGTE (ST215) to my buddies garage. ![]() ![]() Got a pretty good deal on it because the seller didn't have the ECU with the engine, so I need to track that down. I have heard the wiring is difficult...but I figure it can't be that hard and I have changed a few lightbulbs before plus my friend has done a b16 into a honda civic and he did the wiring for it himself and said we should be able to figure it out. The bad news is my quaife lsd is still about 3 weeks out, so I might run the S54 tranny for a few weeks before getting the real E153 in. Stay tuned for updates.. Yeah I am sorry that was mean...but I couldn't resist... and yes standalone is very tempting...but it is going to be my daily driver so I am going to wait awhile before going crazy on it. I was very happy with how clean the motor was, I looked in the oil cap and it is a beautiful gold shade, so I am very happy with it.
I just got in all of the seals and gaskets, water pump, and timing belt so I am going to go ahead and do those sometime this week. I will keep the thread updated. -------------------- |

Sweet - take your time do it right, torque everything to spec, use only OEM or namebrand upgrade parts and that thing will be a freaking monster that will last.

You should look into megasquirt for an ecu. Its going to be almost impossible to find the oem ecu for that motor. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Actually check with Hux racing - I think they ended up with my old 4th Gen ECU or at least know what happened to it. The Camry my motor was going into wasn't gonna use it.

The more you think about it, the more you'll want it in and you cant have it right now. So do something that'll take your mind off of it. Go play Need for Speed or something
i thought they also gave about 60hp if tuned correctly... Yeah, tuning floor mats is very important. They also need fresh belts and fluid every 3000 miles if they're to work properly. The last thing you wanna do is neglect them. That's the number one cause of cars exploding, neglected floor mats. -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! Damn D-Man - most impressive. you can, but for me, I made a new one that is adjustable. With the stock one, you cannot adjust timing. And you need to modify the stock crank pulley to make it works.

what do u mean? if you can get the stock one to work(which requires more work then most want to do) ..you should be able to adjust it? ....the simple way is to take a 91 to 95 ford escort EDIS system and stick it on....if some one can direct me to a website that has info on using the stock wheel and sensors that would be great.

In my ST215 swap, I did like you said : use an Escort EDIS system and bolt it on. This is what I did. I did a special bracket that has adjustment for the VR sensor. If you want to use the stock sensor, you will not be able to adjust it because it's bolted on the oil pump housing. You cannot move the sensor versus the crank pulley, that mean no timing adjustment. And you cannot move the pulley versus the crankshaft. So no adjustement there too. And you need to grind a tooth into the stock crank pulley to make it work with the EDIS.
Maybe there are some EMS that can handle the stock pulley/sensor configuration and use COP, but Megasquirt cannot and this is why I used EDIS system. For now, there is absolutely no downside of using EDIS. I'll post pics of my pulley/sensor system soon |

Well guys, another update for you. Last night we built some brackets for the intercooler and got that hung, as well as fabricating all of the intercooler piping that we could without the engine actually installed. Also got the boost gauge installed so that's ready to go.

So we were slacking on the updates because of being so busy actually doing the swap, finally got some time now. Basically here's how it all went down: Most of the week after work prodigy worked on the wiring harness using another Celica engine harness. Thursday after work, 9pm to 3am, installed and tig-welded intercooler and about half of the piping. Friday after work, started work at about 8:30pm and worked all through the night until about Saturday at 9am. We got the 5SFE out, tranny swapped over, and 3SGTE bolted into place. Then we went and crashed at my place for a few hours. Saturday 1pm to 11pm got all rest of the intercooler piping tig'd up, as well as the cold air intake, and all the other million little things to do. Sunday slept in a little bit, got started around 12. Finished up the exhaust work and installed the belts and then primed it and fired up on the first try... as usual Enjoy the pics... ![]() ![]() Kirk mount inserts... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() True cold air intake ![]() ![]() Caldina BOV installed... ![]() ![]() Check out how I routed the intercooler piping. I think it came out awesome... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks guys
This was by far the fastest 3S swap that I've ever done. (This is prodigy's only car so it HAD to be done by Sunday night). First, we did a lot of planning to make sure that we had everything ready to go, and we did everything possible that could be done before actually starting the swap, such as the Walbro fuel pump, the boost gauge, hanging the intercooler and doing as much of the piping as we could, plus doing the timing belt/seals/gaskets etc on the engine. Then we brought everything over to the shop and got to work. We ran short on a couple of small things, like a few clamps and one coupler. Thankfully we had some extra around from other swaps that we were able to pull from, that saved us a potential problem. Of course I sent prodigy off to the parts store a bunch of times to pick up little odds and ends. Once we got everything put together and warmed up we took it out on the street to make sure all was well. Of course it wasn't long before we opened it up About 10 minutes after I get home, my phone rings and I'm like, uh-oh. I look and sure enough it's him. I answer and he's like, "Hey, the Celica started making a racket and I pulled over, now my battery light is on". Right away I though, alternator belt, and sure enough, he checked and it was all shredded. By pure coincidence he happened to be less than a block away from the shop. So I said, "take the alternator belt off and head over to the shop on battery power, I'll be there in a few minutes". Turns out that the parts store gave him a 6-rib belt instead of a 5-rib belt, I didn't notice when I put it on. So we stole the belt off easternpiro's car and got that installed, then it was all set. Now I need to buy a new belt for piro's car And yeah, it pulls nice -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

pitcelica, I'm interested in that downpipe!!!
Matt, first order of business is going to be to build a full 3" mandrel-bent stainless steel tig-welded exhaust system. Then, we'll pick up a boost controller, and run it on the dyno to tune the cam gearS. Then I forsee us picking up an AEM FI/C and seeing what we can do with that -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

Sorry I haven't had time to post up....but wow the car feels great. When we finished the swap on sunday my 30 minute drive home turned into aout a 3.5 hour long drive all around the surronding area. First and second gear do not have traction as of now I am looking forward to seeing what the lsd will do for it. Also need to do some brake and suspension work on the car to help it handle the power.
All in all the car is amazing, it is nice to be able to tell people that I have a swapped car and that there is NO check engine light on, I have cruise control, a/c, and power steering. oh and it is pretty fast too. -------------------- |

good job guys! loving the OEM COP setup, one of the things that i realllllly like about the 4th gen 3s. well, that and the pimp OEM side feed manifold. lol tweek, do you have a solid source for 4th gen parts? just curious. Yeah, the manifold is teh hotness. As a matter of fact, I do -Doc ahh thats good to hear, i had heard the 4th gen parts are a bunch harder to come by than the 3rd gen,...do you find that to be true? pittcelica, im not looking for any parts, like i said to tweek, i was just curious. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

Tweak... make a list of parts between the 3rd and 4th. Please..... this is a list that pitcelica made, as you can see in prodigy's pics the 3rd gen cams fit (with some modification?) So, as I can seen, a lot of people want to know what are the aftermarket parts are available for the ST215 3SGTE engine. Here's are some parts that are bolt on : -Adjustable cam gear (AEM, Fidanza, HKS, OBX, ATS). Any cam gear kit for 3SGTE will fit. -XS Power SSAC ST205 manifold/downpipe used with a ST205 turbo will convert the one-piece ST215 manifold/turbo to a nicely upgradeable ST205 Ct20b turbo kit. You can add to this a t3/t4 adaptor and you will be able to use a t3/t4 turbo (like I did on my ST215 swap) -Pistons, rods, crankshaft are all the same for ST205 and ST215 -The injectors are the same as the ST205 one, so, if there is a 3rd gen fuel system available, it will fit the ST215 too. -The exhaust camshaft is the same as the ST205 one. So an HKS 264/272 exhaust camshaft will bolt on. For the intake, I don't know if the HKS one would fit. Next year, when money will allow it, I'll buy a HKS264/264 camshaft kit and I'll know if the intake camshaft fit or not. -You can remove the top ATA intercooler and add a FMIC as easy as any other 3SGTE. The things that need heavy custom work is the ECU/wiring harness, ignition component (because of coil-on-plug). In my case, I used a Megasquirt II ECU with Ford EDIS wastespark ignition system and everything works nicely. The other aftermarket parts like BOV, wastegate, air intake, boost controller etc, can be fitted easily like on any other 3SGTE engine. So plz, stop saying that the ST215 engine isn't easily modifiable, there are plenty of parts that can be used to give a lil more hp to this unknown beast. -------------------- |

hi, here are some oem parts that are interchangeable :
-pistons -connecting rods -crankshaft -exhaust camshaft -cam gears -timing belt -water pump -Intake manifold (bolt pattern are the same) -fuel rail and injectors from ST215 are 540cc and top feed, so they have the same output rating as gen3, but they are top feed instead of side-feed(gen3) -exhaust manifold (same bolt pattern)(but the 4th gen exhaust manifold is casted with the turbine housing) -MAT sensor (manifold air temp) -MAP sensor -crank pulley -oil pans -oil pickup system -knock sensor -ac compressor -alternator (I need to verify this) I need to look at valves and springs to see if they are interchangeable or not. I'll look in my Toyota EPC later. Hope to help! sam |

The alternator can be replaced with one from any 5SFE or 3SGTE, along with the a/c compressor and the p/s pump (though the 4th gen p/s pump uses an electronic sending unit for the idle-up).
Bear in mind that the 4th gen injectors are also high-impedance, and no resistor pack is used. -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

Whoops, forgot to follow up on this. Here they are.
Posted 3-3-09 I have completed the Quaife install and I did it all the RIGHT way, but it was quite a process. In fact, I just got it in the car this past weekend. I was waiting to get the axles all figured out and have the completed pics ready to share, but since you asked, I'll spill the beans early. First of all, no one knows anything about measuring bearing preload. Everyone I talked to, including people who install Quaife LSDs, either had no idea what I was talking about, or knew about it but said something to the effect of, "oh yeah, we always skip that part" or "oh, I just do it by hand". This whole situation really concerned me for two reasons. One, it went against the way I do things which as most of you guys know, is by the book and the best I possibly can. Second, I didn't want to burn up a $1400 diff! So after getting to this point in the build, I determined where the shims were located and how to replace them to measure the preload, as well as what order to do it in (that was a little confusing in the manual). Also, I had to purchase a 0-30 in/lb range torque wrench since nothing else would measure accurately down that low. That took a while to find. Finally I got it, and also bought a press to properly install the new bearings (I did replace both sides). First I did the initial step of measuring the preload which you do with only the output shaft. Once that number was determined, I did it with the diff and output shaft installed. With the output shaft only, it measured just barely on the high side for used bearings which I felt okay with. Then I took the case back apart and installed the diff. As soon as I bolted the case back up I knew that it was too tight since it was hard to turn the output shaft by hand. I measured it and sure enough, it was way out of spec (too tight). This was a little frustrating because I would have to order shims from Toyota, but at the same time I felt validated about making sure I checked the preload. The next weekend I got the shims in, and I had decided to go just one step down on the output shaft shim as well to get it into spec. That part went fine. Then I started going down with the differential shims, one at a time. I took that case apart and put it back together like 6 times that day!!!! But finally I got it perfect, right under the top of the range. I had ordered several sizes of shims to make sure I got the one I needed (I ended up going down about 3 sizes. There are like 20 sizes in total). It's been a pretty long process but the experience I've gained (and the tools I've bought!) will be invaluable for future installs ![]() Pressing the bearings on: ![]() Preparing to bolt the case on to measure preload: ![]() This was the catalyst that inspired us to put the E153/Quaife in. This disc was a cheap one made by a local clutch shop, it was only supposed to be in there for a couple weeks while we installed the Quaife. We didn't even start working on it until about 4 months later when it blew ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The broken springs got behind the flywheel and chewed up the rear main seal housing. It was okay though thankfully. ![]() Putting the E153 together for the LAST TIME! ![]() ![]() ![]() Bolting it up. It's a tight fit in the Celica. ![]() ![]() Why yes, that is a Quaife! ![]() Posted 4-10-09 Little update, finally got the axles figured out. Got a sweet setup that works perfectly using off-the-shelf parts. ![]() ![]() The car is just amazing with all the traction. Next up is tires, springs/struts, exhaust and boost controller. -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

there's no need for adjustable cam gears on an st215 is there?? it's got vvtl-i.... False, ST215 3SGTE engine isn't VVTi or VVTL-i. It has the same cam gears as any other 3SGTE generations. Only the 3SGE BEAMS redtop engine has VVTi on the intake cam and the 3SGE blacktop found in the Lexus IS200 is dual VVTi (intake and exhaust). No 3SGTE are VVTi.
