How can I be sure I'm buying a 3rd gen 3SGTE engine? Is there a badge that will say "ST205" on the block or something like that?

I'm sorry I'm a total newb... I'm just guessing here: ST185 is for the 2nd GEN 3SGTE, correct? So, where on the engine would I look to ensure it was from a ST205?

If your bying a clip its pretty obvious, if not you can look for the W2A intercooler. The st185 has A2A and AFM while the 3rd gen uses MAP (there are no chunk of block on the intake pipe). There are more ways but these are the obvious ones.

Edit: KAOS man you should know better than this, you've been here for over 2 years. rolleyes.gif

You're gonna want a clip anyway so it's gonna be obvious. The ST-205 W2A is HUGE.
Plus the obvious differences in body parts.

Don't use the Water to air intercooler as the way to tell, because the ST185 RC uses the same setup. Look at the intake manifold: if there are 8 runners, it's a gen 2, if there are 4 runners, it's a gen 3 (or 4).

The gen 4 uses a side-inlet intake manifold and a huge air to air intercooler.

Very true but the RC version is much smaller and the 165 is even smaller than that.
He's right tho - the intake runners and shape would be more telling.

Are you sure the RC version is smaller? I know there are a couple differences but I thought it was basically the same size.

Damn. Someone took that pic of the ST-205 one down but I have a pic of the other two side by side. Give me a few.
BTW - I'm just going on what I read and have seen from pictures. I've only ever had my hands on ST-165 W2A and ST-215 A2A.

The ST165 WTA intercooler is VERY small, that's for sure. It's almost funny to look at!

LOL yeah here's that one:

Notice how the RC one has a decently long pipe coming from the Turbo? If I can find that pic of the ST-205 that will make this obvious for you.

Oh yeah, I see where you're going. The ST205 one is a little deeper, isn't it.

the 205 wta is a bit bigger then the 185 one

gen 2 3sgte have the 8 inlet mani runners, the badge on the inlet mani saying 2000 twin entry turbo (and cermaics power also if its jdm)
gen 2 have a gay hard line comming out of the rocker cover and turning 90 deg heading away from the motor at the back (pcv line) around above the exhaust cam.
gen 2 have afm
gen 2 have the oil filter on the block next to the exhaust manifold

gen 3 have 4 runners in the inlet manifold, the plenum is a bit bigger with no badge and smoother shape.
gen 3 have one large diameter vertical hard line thats about 30mm long for pcv, also on the back of the rocker cover but its above the inlet cam.
gen 3 oil filter is next to the sump below the motor.
gen 3 wta intercooler has an extra opening that goes to the factory bov (opening next to the intercoolers inlet pipe)
gen 3 have map sensor
