For now, I'm keeping my Celica as a daily driver and RX7 as performance. The ongoing question I get asked when driving my Celica though...."Is it fast?"...

How do you define fast? Will it beat a stock Civic...sure. Will beat any slightly modded Civic...yeah most likely.

Well, then you ask...what about a turbo'd car...does it keep up? This is the question I have trouble answering and here is why. A few weeks ago, I lost 50 bucks to a kid in a 93 Talon TSI. I actually had him, i'm an auto his being a turbo manual, until he hit third and he beat me by three car lengths. I then race a 96 Talon TSI, with an automatic...and win by a bumper.

I'm very confused on what to answer to this question, so....my question to this board is...what do you say when you're asked "Is that car fast?"

Personally, I say that it's fast enough, but what do you guys say? Obviously, if you have boost...this question doesn't apply to you because your Celi is another category...but to those of you with N/A Celi's...what do you answer?

Thanks for your help in this ongoing controversial question.

I got a similar problem with my 300ZX TT Vrs the Stock Celica.

As far as speed goes:- the Z takes it out all over the Celica but I am very wary of the speeding tickets too.

So I decided I would sell my Celica, then my younger brother smashed my mums car, so now mum drives my Celica and I drive my Z, and I won't let my younger brother near my two cars, (before and after the accident).

But then for top speed:- an older guy at work was saying when he was young he was doing up cars and so on, but after the wife and kids came it was all over. Also no matter how fast the car was, he got use to the car and wanted another with more speed.

So in conclusion "is the car fast" is not an option, it is whether it gets you from A to B, (without a speeding ticket).

If someone asks me if its fast I just flat out say no, because its not fast. There are too many modded R32's R33's S14's and s15's and STI's running around my city. The are probably the bench mark to being "fast" around here.

Exactly why I say mine is. We have an udder lack of fast cars and a supremecy of Honda's. Honda defines fast for here, so I can say that smile.gif

I've been saying "Not yet" over the summer, and when I come home to get my car in two weeks, it should be fairly fast. wink.gif

What is the estimated HP off the flywheel on that motor? (I know I could do my research... I'm lazy)

I wouldnt say that a GT is slow....it has some serious pep to it, and can keep me entertained, but out of trouble with the law at the same time.

A friend of mine rode in my car for the first time the other day, and i was just kinda crusing along like i usually do. He was telling me how it felt like we were going alot more than 45-50 cuz the way the celica has really direct feeling acceleration, which ive always thought was very true. So i made a turn on to his road which was a big wide road going to a development area, and i hit it pretty hard to his encouragement.....i was kinda suprised, cuz the 5s can dish it out when you really want it to. biggrin.gif

Now add boost to that equation.....mmmmm smile.gif

Yeah i'd have to agree GT's are pretty quick, but I wouldent call them fast. I've supprised quite a few people in my town already who have underestimated its potential. I stomped all over my best friend and his 95 eclipse GS, but I know better than to test my car's skills against a Prelude...

I got an auto GT 97, with all basic bolt up, the best mos is suprisingly the Venom 400 which is often bashed. I love how from a start w/the Venom the cars RPM's just fly through the roof from 1st to 2nd. But when I turn it off its all sorts of sluggish.

I know the Celicas are not fast but there VERY enjoyable and fun as hell to drive, speed shouldnt be everything, style, elegance, handling and yes..power. I believe the celica incorporates all of these flawlessly, but thats me.

It seams to me that something beside hp and torque, because, even though my friends 240sx has more hp and torque than me, I always beat his ass at racing and handling.

when someone asks me if the car is fast I say "its quick, but bing fast is not all that matters, you need styling, handling, reliability and a certain feel"

then they usually say, "soooooooo, is it fast?" to which I reply "**** off"

oh btw, wOOt 600 posts

hehe not meaning it to be a huge dis, but like this whole topic is about, the car really isnt "fast", its definatly quick" but its quick in different areas than streightline. and nope, celica isnt sold yet frown.gif i hate making it seem like i dont like this car, cuz i REALLY do, but it doesnt fit into my situation. I could definatly see myself in a 99 GT 5-spd with a WRC 3sgte swap sometime in the future... but it just doesnt fit in right now. and im really looking forward to racing the MR2... frown.gif

well, its not like any of us are bitter or anything, I'd rather have the mr2 turbo, just because its a sweet looking ride. But that dosent mean that I dont like the celica.

what i find that really shoots the celi's in the foot is the hp to weight ratio. i don't consider mine to be anywhere near fast. however out of the cars i've owned it is by far the most fun to drive, throw some 17X7's and some decent rubber and have a ball!!! and boy is she purdy! BTW the other cars i've owned are '93 integra, '95 integra and a '96 civic coupe.
