Seriously, what is the most effective way to quit? I wish I could just get a shot that magically made me not want to smoke any more. After my uncle died this year of liver cancer, I promised my mom I wouldn't let her bury me and want to quit for her. Yet I think about the consequences, I know it is a matter of will power (not my strongest suit). Do those patches really work? The gum doesn't cut it for me. Anyways, I just thought I would ask.

My friend is trying to quit, he just started buying tabacco and rolling paper so he can make his own. He figures he'll be too lazy to make a whole 20 every few days, so that'll make it less tempting to just go through like 5-10 a day. Which I could actually see working for him b/c he's pretty lazy (no offense to him, but he even admits it). I know the first day, we were hanging out and for the 5hrs or so, he only had 2 which IS progress for him. But I don't know that that's the route for everyone though b/c it consists of smoking, still.

Nah that sounds like a good idea actually! Because I am lazy as HEEEEEEEEELL, unless it comes to my car. Honestly, if I was just a weekend smoker or smoked only when I drink, there would not be a problem. Even now, if I can do that, I wouldn't bother quitting and accept whatever the good Lord believes should come of me. Part of me wants to keep like this and I honestly pray hard that God or someone or some way at least allows me to out live my mother and she sees I am fine. After she passes, I will accept whatever hell on earth I deserve, I just don't want her to see me suffer and have to bury me after all she has done for me and took care of me as a child. Unfortunately the moments I find that I can quit, something always happens out of the blue that pulls me right back in. I have a very short temper and I admit that I am weak mentally. When my plans fail, they destroy things until a day of nothing to make plans again. I am horrible at that.

And for any of you other "believers" of whatever religion, if you do pray, is it too much to ask a mention that I can do this or earn favor to make it past my mother's life time? Even by a minute of her passing no matter how soon or long?

Thanks

Seriously, I know I am only 26, but the older you get, you really come to realize you are very mortal and very prone to those "Things" you hear about and closer to death.

I can't get addicted, so technically, I can't ever quit.

Seriously, nicotine has no effect on me. THC is another story. biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone. I guess I need to plan this whole thing out and go out of town for a good time and not smoke. This town makes me angry. Griff has an idea of how I feel about this town. I swear once I at least get my AA I am out! I need to find a new city or new state that I can get my BA and be happy.

I have a real short temper and I do not get into fights, I do not punch things, but it is hard going even one day without a smoke. 1 day I can do, but on day two, something always happens to piss me off.

Last year I went cold turkey for a month and then came right back. I went for a 2nd try since Feb of this year (my bday), and I haven't smoked since.

1. When I wake up in the morning, my chest doesn't feel congested anymore.
2. When I run, exercise, do labor work, I no longer have headaches.
3. My breathe smells better, no more cigarette smell.
4. Better oral hygiene.
5. MOST CHICKS HATE SMOKERS.

And the best part, you'd be amazed how people look at you. Smoker and non-smoker friends all gave me thumbs up for quitting. It just makes you feel good. Feels like an accomplishment. Something that I cherish everyday, and will try my best not to destroy it by going back.

Well, so far so good!

biggrin.gif

Edit: I had something that helped me quit the 2nd time, it is simply a pack of "Red Double Happiness" cigarette from China. It is 10x stronger than Camel and Marlboro Red, and 10x more bitter than Winston. After a pack of that ****, I kept having headaches and I felt like I was gonna die. I quitted. So... China actually made something that helped me..

cold turkey brother.

i don't get addicted for some reason..i can smoke 5 cigs a day or share a pack with a friend (stressed the hell out, out drinkin, etc) and be alright with nothing to smoke the next day.

maybe its cuz i'm more of an alcoholic? dunno, but i think that you should just try goin cold turkey. known many people who have done it that way and are now nonsmokers.

good luck man.

I too would be intrested in the best way to stop smoking... for someone with little to no will power.

Farthermore, my biggest problem is that i like smoking... It's fun... There used to be a little bar/club here in houston (called the hooka bar) and they' had oxygen-square'd coals that you could smoke (with fantastic flavors) does anyone know where to buy that stuff at? what else is LEGAL to smoke? W/o drug like properties rolleyes.gif (dont tell me silvia dorium)

Hand rolling dosen't work either. I smoke about 2 packs a day, and i'm one LAZY bastard... and if i was too lazy to roll, i went to the store and bough packs laugh.gif

I'd like to know about this chineese stuff you've gotten. As for your list...

1. I'm a heavy boozer. My head and chest will always feel congested.
2. I do not run or excercise. The only manual labor i do is on a fork-lift.
3. Again, i'm a heavy boozer. my breath could usualy make a small child dizzy.
4. Alchol is a cleaning product. I also brush; about 3 times a day. (idk why, i ilke brushing my teeth. i've also got a bad-a T.brush)
5. Common law marrage. Chick + Me = Fistfights... frown.gif

set a date and remember that date.

keep thinking its been ___ days since i quit.
keep thinking its been ___ weeks since i quit.

if you talk about it and tell people that you quit and tell others to quit saying "its been ___ months since you quit."

it helps

My tip for you guys are to lower the number of smokes a day first. Than if possible go cold turkey. Its all mentally based thoughts and bad habits. I used to light a smoke every time i would sit inside my car. I started to take out any lighters or cigarettes to prevent the possibility of having a smoke. It actually worked for me. I stopped smoking in my car but was still smoking. The next step i took was just to keep my self constantly occupied when i was really craving a smoke. I would read books, play Wii, or work on something in my car and would not take any breaks. Yeah its hard, but eventually after a month or so of not smoking, even if you get suckered back into one smoke. The smoke feels awful, its like a self guilt trip.

Good luck! Also wouldn't you think it would be better to use your money on car parts than cigarettes, cause smoking can really add up. LOL

October 22nd will be my 1 year since I quit smoking. I started smoking when I was 15, almost 16, and quit at 33 just about exactly 18 years after I started. That's a scary prospect, to be in my 30s and have smoked for half my life. I always associated people smoking half their lives to people who were older, like in their 50s at least.

Whatever method you use to quit smoking, the bottom line is really simple. You have to want it. Genuinely want it. If you do, you'll find a way that works for you and you'll quit. It's that simple. It sucks, and it's really hard. I was a complete basket case when I quit - and damn near homicidal for a good 3 weeks after quitting, and that was WITH the patch (which I actually recommend). I either cried all the time or really genuinely wanted to harm people. I had ridiculously ****ed up dreams from being on the patch, and yeah, I gained weight. You quit any stimulant and you're gonna gain weight.

A year later I'm still just as determined to not pick it up again as a habit. I can honestly say that while I have smoked maybe 10 or so cigarettes in the last year, I haven't felt the actual "urge" to smoke except for once, when one of my dogs died. I have no desire whatsoever to smoke on any kind of regular basis. And I'm really really proud of myself for finally quitting. biggrin.gif

LOL I agree though on the motivational speaker part.

Yeah, that is the biggest part I am worried about. "Gaining" the weight. I have gone up in weight, but I kinda like it on me now. Just don't want to gain anymore. Especially not in the stomach!! No way, not an ounce more or anything.

I need to do this though. Maybe I guess I should not just work out but run more.

Its a cotine buzz that you get on your first few cigs or lips. Makes your head spin for about 15 mins pleasantly then you just get extremely euphoric. The main reason is started smoking.

Oh kinda like(D) doing NOS. LOL Ah, how I miss those brain damaging Duster cans...... But that is bad kiddies! Don't ever do it! Because you can really mess your lungs up worse than a few cigs, and you become dumb as hell!

Ooops, I meant LIKED. LOL See what I mean?

They don't want this to become a discussion of weed though. Yes, I have never met anyone who smokes weed to be known or known anyone to catch lung cancer and yes, scientists are discovering that it has at least 10% chance of reducing cancer (average American who is healthy is at 25% risk). But even so, it is considered a drug (stupid government because they can't compete) and therefore illegal. Not all in California, because Government stepped in and made busts on those "legal" shops. (I am such a Hypocrite and here's why... LOL)

Anyways, because this site is a family site. On behalf of the mods and everyone else, it would be best if we kept this on topic with quitting smoking, and not about the use of illegal drugs or anything else illegal, because if no one puts a stop to it, it makes us look bad. As a community, we cannot have that.

first of all i have to chime in on the marijuana haters. In california you can get hand cramps and smoke as much weed as you want all day everyday wherever you want, if you start deleting posts because i said you should smoke weed to help you quit smoking and improve your life then you need to go back through all these posts about smoking 2 packs a day, drinking, NOS, and delete them all too because none of that is family orientated.

IMHO if we want to talk about THC then we should be able to, this is the off topic section in a forum full of older people who like to modify cars (which is illegal). If you dont believe in marijuana then just ignore it. Dont cry because it is illegal in some places, aspirin is legal, but if you take 13 of them mother****ers it'll be your last headache, are you going to delete posts about aspirin too?

For what it's worth, I agree, although continuing is getting off the subject and call me a boyscout, but I don't want to upset the mods here. I like this site and I am working on getting in good with everyone, because it is important to me. Which is why I respect what they ask and if they say don't do it, I am not going to do it. But those are good points and the argument honestly could go either way.

Are you guys going to continue this thread jack sub topic on weed that they asked you not to go on about? Or can we get back on ex smokers? Is that all right with you? Not trying to be an @$$ (Which I hear I am notorious for), but because this isn't related to being an ex smoker.

Okay, Seeing as i'm a "marijuana hater" Do me a favor and look at the bold blue bar that displays the TITLE of THIS THREAD... Does it say "discuss marijuana"? Does it say "debate on cali and it's stoners"? er... no i dont see that...

Where in that title does it say "let's talk pot"? Perhaps i'm too stoned to see it rolleyes.gif OR... Or or or... Perhaps it doesen't say that. Maybe this thread is about cigarettes? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, the entire nation doesn't live by pot nor give a damn about it. I believe if we all did, then there'd be a potleafs instead of stars on the american flag laugh.gif

Not everyone cares. No offense to you or your billy-bad-ass additude (just because you smoke weed) but we're not discussing pot. Go drink some coffee or something, and re-read this thread wink.gif You've obviously fired your brain way too much to comprehend anything past your next hit.

btw: I know and understand the value of having a bag; but there are other things that you can do in life too wink.gif Dont be so one tracked. Alchol and tobaco are legal in the entire country. You post has lived because it's legal in your state. Big freakin deal. This thread is about ciggerettes and the best way to quit smoking.

Your idea may have been a good one, But Smoking pot is still Smoking. We're discussing ways of NOT smoking. Yes, i smoke 2 packs of marbrol cigerettes a day. Easy. Sometimes i'll crack into a third for a few before bed. But; That's the topic of discusion in this thread.

Now: all of the people whom want to declare they are potheads and show off to each other; Go make yourself a thread. Enjoy. Have fun. But quit with the hijack on this thread talking about everthing that dosen't matter.

(damn, you know it's bad when i'm telling people to get back on topic rolleyes.gif )

Perhaps your too busy sitting on the internet to open your eyes to the world around you. Maybe, just maybe, 90% of americans between ages 18-40 admit to smoking weed and liking it. Maybe the entire nation does give a damn about pot, maybe 30 billion dollars a year are spent combating the drug, perhaps millions of americans suffering from cancer will feel relief and comfort through the smoking/vaporization of cannibus. Maybe just maybe if you did your research before trying to spit hate over the internet you would have learned that for tens of thousands of years the single most farmed crop in the world was cannibus prior to 1937 so pot leaves on our american flag would not have been a surprise to anyone.

thanks for the advice, i just re-read the thread and i JUST couldnt help but notice that one of my earlier posts had been deleted, because it mentioned weed, the only reason for my post that you so lovingly decided to hate on.

I think that while you're entitled to your opinions, the whole point here is to just keep the thread on topic. (A point, I might add, would have been better and more clearly made had people kept it short and sweet and not engaged.)

Faustino - one of the tactics I used before I quit smoking was to change up my habits/patterns. First I started by waiting a little longer to smoke after dinner; eventually to just not smoke after dinner, or maybe sometimes I would and sometimes not. Also, I managed to stop smoking on my breaks at work. Yeah, that sucked. But you have to find something else to do on your breaks. Drink water. Go for a walk around the block. Whatever it takes to ride it out for that 10 or 15 minutes of your break.

The single hardest pattern for me was to NOT smoke while I drove to and especially home from work. I never really liked smoking in the morning, so that wasn't too hard, but to this day sometimes it's still difficult to not smoke on the way home. It's that time I use to decompress from my day... first I would set little "goals" for myself, like waiting until I hit a certain exit number off the freeway until I smoked. Some days I couldn't wait, so instead I just made sure I only smoked that one cigarette on the drive home. Waiting until I was halfway home helped a lot though, that way I could kind of work it into the middle of my commute and still only smoke 1 cigarette.

When I actually did quit, I bought lollipops with gum in the middle for those drives home. I only ate them maybe like 3 times though, because I had already worked for about 2 months on changing up my habits, so by that time I was pretty well prepared for it. What really sucked was I actually quit like 2 weeks before my birthday, and I knew I would absolutely have to avoid bars because (for now) we can still smoke in bars, and anyone who has ever smoked will attest to the fact that it is damn near impossible to drink and NOT smoke. So I avoided going to any bars for several months. I'll be honest - it's still REALLY hard to not smoke when I'm drinking, particularly if I'm out with friends drinking. At this point though, I don't feel a compulsion to smoke, so I actually WILL smoke some if I find myself getting pretty liquored up. I don't feel bad about it, and it doesn't kick up any renewed desire to buy cigarettes or anything. By the next day, I'm totally fine and do not experience any cravings at all. Mind you though, I'm telling you this almost exactly one year (tomorrow!) after quitting. It'd be a different story if it was a month or two after quitting. You have to distance yourself from it for a long time.

Wow that was long. Sorry.
