hi,

I am looking into installing a new head unit and 6" front speakers into the doors at the front.

I have the original toyota cassette player and speakers but do not like it.

is it easy to swap this system and put in a Sony DAB stero and infinity componant speakers?

http://shop.audioimages.co.uk/sony-cdx-dab...rol-p-1049.html
http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-...0cs_p-22418.htm

Could a novice like myself do this? Does it require expert installation? Do I need to mess around with any of the car's electrical systems eg affecting the fuse box etc? sorry i dont know much about cars!

thanks

Hi rasta,

Changing out the head unit is fairly simple. It does not involve anything with the fuses/electrical system. You'll need a wiring harness for your car, what that does is plugs into the car and has wires for you to connect so you do not have to cut the factory wiring harness. Then the radio and harness should come with instructions on how to wire it up, and what color wire corresponds to what function, like speakers, antenna, etc. From that point its just a matter of crimping the wires together and sticking it back into the dash.

here is a detailed how-to.

The speakers are also fairly easy but you'll have to find a way to modify the housing in the door to accomodate a smaller size speaker. You can custom make something or do something like Death did here.

It's pretty easy, I did the exact same thing and I'm a noob as well. I ordered my stuff from Crutchfield.com, so it came with specific instructions, but I'm sure whatever you're getting does too, and if not, you can get the how-to here.

The only way that the speakers will drop in is to order adapters, unless you want to make your own.
http://cgi.ebay.com/6-Front-Speaker-Adapte...1742.m153.l1262
These are the ones you need, and everything should just fit right in. Like samir said, you'll need harness for both speakers and the head unit.

Yes, No, Anything electrical goes through the fuse box (although you wont be messing with any fuses)

finally, you'll need to bypass your factory amp. Don't forget to buy a wiring harness for this; as well as some connectors. Do a search, there are about 100 different installs and how-to's. Feel free to PM if you need any one on one advice.

EDIT: PLEASE do not cheap out by using electrical tape instead of real connectors. Whom ever had my car before me did this, and it pisses me off that someone would spend the same amount of money on a roll of electrical tape, opposed to the same price on real connectors. Remember that electrical tape will eventually come off, and when those wires touch other wires or anything metal in the dash; then things start getting fried, burnt, broken, and destroyed. mad.gif

We have a factory amplifier under the center of the dash (infront of the shifter, under the ac controls) that cannot be hooked up using the scorche harness. IDK if someone made one to go thru our factory amp (witch'd be gay & make the audio sound like sh!t) but the direct speaker out harness has to be connected to the aftermarket head unit itself. (provided that you've got atleast 45w / 4chan out laugh.gif )

Origonal size is a 6.5 in an 8" frame. Read this for a purdy how-to:

The brand is Fujitsu. Your speakers are probably blown, but even if they were perfect, aftermarket speakers would still be an improvement. I have Type-S all around and I'm hugely happy...I've never heard the Infinity's, but I can vouch for the Alpines and they're very good. It might also depend on the type of music you listen to. The only bad thing I can say about my speakers is that they sound like they distort a little to me, but I listen to everything pretty loudly.

My head unit is 50x4. So how is this done exactly? I wired mine up according to Crutchfield's directions specific to a '97, so I'm guessing that they account for this?

perhaps. Or perhaps via crutchfields directions they had you wire around your factory amp just like the rest of us have. Unless there was ever a lesser version of a factory stereo than what my vert had in it... then again, i know that us vert guys got hooked up on all kinds of stuff like that... so idfk. laugh.gif

all i know is that if you have a factory amp, you wanna wire around it. biggrin.gif otherwise, you'll be sending in way to much power thru the "INPUT" so the FA would amplify an already ideal/sufficient "OUTPUT" signal, and distort the crap out of it, then bellow that nasty sound out at the same wattage. So in the end, it wouldn't be louder, it'd be distorted.

I wish they had more of a techno scene here...I miss the rock & dance thing they had going on in EU, here it's always rock & rap.

I listen to a lot of ****, you'd probably be most interest in the reggae. Bob, Stephen, Ziggy, and Damian Marley. Slightly Stoopid. Sublime (reggae-rock), Matisyahu, UB40.

UB40 is bomb.

There's some dance that I love though...old school stuff. "Better off Alone" is probably one of my favorite songs right now.

Installing a head unit is real simple. not sure about the speakers.

As a guy up top said definitely buy an adapter to hook the head unit into the main loom (you dont want to cutting the loom) and use connectors not insulation tape if you have to cut the adapter. Mine just plugged straight in. I would personally cable tie or tape all the cables together once you have finished so that it is tidy and they wont vibrate themselves loose or create rattles.

It is kinda scary how easy it is to remove the head unit from our cars. :S

Nope. Got a gal and a kid... although from time to time i will get loaded at the house (usualy after working on the fcuking celica for hours; or doing fiberglass work b/c i'm all light-headed and high) i'll put it on the music channels on hella-huge TV and crank the surround (witch is tremundous) and rock out with the black lights and stuff. My daughter loves it when we do that, because everything looks all crazy, and she'll laugh and yell at stuff, and throw things and try to go and chase em down. It's pretty awesome.

And that's about the closest to clubbin' that i do anymore. Even in the day, i never cared for real "clubs" but random roof-tops and abandoned buildings, parking garages, and creepy places in the woods/deserts/lakes/bayou's(ect.) made FANTASTIC places to party. thumbsup.gif

That sir would be a doubble din, and it'll bolt right in. We've got spiffy brackets that hold our single din headunits, and crap-cubbys; that'll be used to mount the new head unit. As long as all the screws line up; then you'll be fine. If that head unit has standard mounting locations, then all will be well. Dont forget your wiring harness from wal mart for a whopping 5 bucks... And dont forget that you'll have to bypass the factory amp. I believe i mentioned that already though. Have fun.

yeah you did mention that. i've been doin my research thumbsup.gif

oh and wat's the stock size for the door speakers? my gf got me some clarion 6.5" for christmas and i'm hoping they'll just drop in and hook up. lol. Most of the stuff i've read (like Death's how-to posted earlier) deals with adapting and such.. kindasad.gif

i've been told that they should go right in but it doesn't seem like it from the "stickys." lol. i don't want to start taking the door apart then end up stopping and needing to go to autozone or watever for missing parts tongue.gif
