Xbox 360 vs. PS3 Options

Well, I have a 360 right now but am thinking about getting a PS3 instead. I like my xbox, but I have a refurbished one and it is extremely loud. I can't even bring myself to watch movies on it because the sound of the 360 being on overpowers the sound of the movie. I'm also looking into a PS3 for the blue ray player. I know I could buy a cheap player for less than a ps3 but I was looking to get rid of my xbox anyways. So i'm here just asking your opinion on the two. Just some pro's and cons of each system, mainly the ps3, since I have had my 360 for quite some time now. Hows the online, support, things like that.

Support is fine.

Online is not as good as XBox live, but it is free....

When you add up all the extra things that you need to buy to make the 360 do the same as the PS3, they cost about the same.

The PS3 is MASSIVELY better in terms of quality, it looks and feels like a quality piece of hardware, and runs near silently...

If you play a LOT of online games, you might miss xbox live, but PS3 wins in every other area for me. Some good exclusives out now, and Killzone 2 out in the new year looks AMAZING!

PS3 all day long. I can plug my Ipod into it plus the controlers are bluetooth, so you can use it from another room (great when listing to music) plus there are so many titles that are only avalible on the ps3. If you've got internet, then it's free to get online, no paying for subscriptions.

For me it's the gimick Microsoft work into their system that makes me mad - you have to buy a new add-on for every stupid little thing you want it to do beyond playing games. That's just BS IMO. no, you're right. Other than the PS2 backwards compatability, the PS3 has the best of all worlds. Plus, if you need more, software upgrades are free in the event that you wanna play another type of format. Like for example, i need to get my butt online so i can upgrade my WMA ability; but it's all free and stuff.

Uno? Isn't that played with cards? Do you lay your 360 on it's side and use it for a table? Yup, that sounds about like all a 360 is good for. Or maybe it'd make a good door stop... or eh... paperweight...

yea, I didnt think it would be this one sided. Online gameplay isn't a huge deal for me, i mostly just play with my friends, so if 360 is better at that, no biggie. As long as I am able to play online, it works for me.

No, the PS3 does have online gameing, with all the same capabilities (keyboards, headsets, friends lists, chatting, crap talking while ingame ) the only difference is that PS3 has FREE online gaming, whereas x360 requires you to pay a monthly fee Plus the 360 requires you to buy more stuff for every expansion past plain ole gaming. Like if you wanna watch movies, gotta buy stuff. Just like the regular x-box required you to buy a special remote to play movies; It's total BS. the ps3 will play DVD/B-ray right out of the box. remote is Optional

Base your decision on what games you like to play.
If your a Gears of War fan, a ps3 wont do you any good, the same way that if you like metal gear, the 360 wont do you any good either.

Both are great systems. The 360 has the almost perfect xbox live, while the ps3 has a blue ray player. Figure out whats more important to you.

I love my ps3..I have said it b4 and ill repeat myself It think its the best $400 or w/e dollars I have spent in a long time.

I keep hearing about xbox live and I really have no idea all the details about it but to me the playstation online seems just fine but I can't compare it to an xbox since I have never used one.

And if you want to fix that loud sound your x box is refurbed so probably has early generation x box problems get that 20 $ intercooler from walmart that attaches to the back and ull be good to go if you keep it

360 is cheaper and has more exclusive games... but they're all shooters. i love gears and halo and what-not, but they're all pretty much the same and that's about all 360 has over the ps3. and if you're into online shooters, ps3 also has resistance (which i think is an under-rated below the radar awesome shooter). my other favorite ps3 exclusives are mgs4 (still pretty addicted to mgo), uncharted, and time crisis 4.

False, you do not need to buy anything seperate to watch movies on a 360. You can buy another remote if you want to just like the ps3.

If you buy the cheap ps3 it will only come with Red White Yellow cables. RWY cables will not make blu-ray movies look good. My roommate has a ps3 and before when we would watch movies through his cables on my 1080p LCD tv they looked ok... Watching them through my HDMI cable they look AMAZING. If you buy a PS3 buy the more expensive with the bigger hard drive, and HDMI cables so you can play ps2 games.

PS3 has free online gaming. because it is free very few people actually use it. Because you have to pay for xbox live(6$ a month!!!) you use it more, which is why their online community is so much stronger. Hope that makes since...

Both systems have awesome games, first person shooters, RPG's, or whatever...

If you are just looking for a blu-ray player, get a blu-ray player. If you are looking forward to playing specfic PS3 exclusive games then buy a PS3.

I hope you have a tv worthy of blu-ray.

Littlebigplanet and PAIN FTW! (PS3) oh, and BuzzTV. Most of the Downloadable games are pretty awesome. buy the 40gb, then turn around in the store and buy a 320 or 500gb SATA laptop drive. the instructions for this are IN THE MANUAL!! another 1up for PS3, 360 you HAVE to (unless you're a supersmartnerdyguy) buy the 360 one with the cable. and that's $170 for a 120gb hard drive, when you can get a 320 external for like $135, and just take it apart.

another one... you can download movies/trailers/demos on PS3. i don't pay for anything unless i want to buy it.

even though HDDVD is dead, even with the new ELITE systems they came with, you still had to buy the HDDVD drive for it. why didn't they just make the drive inside an HDDVD drive? all of these can read regular DVD's, thus read 360 games. i mean, comon MS, my laptop has an hddvd drive and it didn't markup the price! ps3, hidef is already there. i'll prolly think of more later, but wanted to get this in before it gets closed

bluray plays across whatever's hooked up to it. it's the resolution that matters. you can put 1080i across RGB Component cables, but only 480 across the cables that come with it, which are the red/white/yellow. if you want 1080p, get the HDMI, you can get one for like $5 from newegg. depending on your audio setup, you may also need a fiberoptic "Toslink" cable. those are cheap from newegg also. see the following thread from when we helped out RJB.

Hum... My ps3 came with HiDef hook-ups. (new 80gig) but the Y pr pb or w/e it's called... But i had an extra HDMI laying around.

HDMI will carry video and audio at the best levels possible. If your equipment can support it, then that's the way to go!!

HDMI cables are SUPER expensive though For example, This one costs .01 cents.

i have it. its pretty fun. i love not having to pay quarters. plus there's other modes you dont get in the arcade. like this one mode where you move around with joysticks like a fps but you actually shoot with the gun. and if you own the rock band drum set, you can use the drum pedal to reload and take cover like in the arcade (might work with guitar hero world tour but not sure). you can get the game pretty cheap now since its old and some used copies floating around.

What kinda hands do you have? The Xbox controller has the same basic shape as the PS3 controller. Blocky?

I think it'd be better if you swapped that theory. Used PS3 because their build quality and price are higher, and a new 360 so that you get the Jasper mobo which shouldn't have any problems.

Just picked up my new ps3 today on my way back to school. Pretty happy other than the fact that I thought my tv had an HDMI input, only to find out it has a DVI input. So my question is, my tv is only capable of running in 1080i at the most, is it necessary to buy a dvi to hdmi cable or is it the same running standard hd cables? The regular hd component cables can run 1080i, which is the limit of my tv, so does it really matter which i buy?

Other than that, I love the way it feels and the setup of it. I put it on my buddy's tv who has an hdmi input and it looks amazing. Bluray on it is ridiculous.

I have a Wii with a Mod-Chip in it and the graphics on a HDTV is terrible. The controls are to awkward and more than 1 hr of game play is going to mess up your wrist. Even with over 20 games none of them are entertaining, most are rather child like and boring. X-box is great if your a heavy sports person or FPS, but when it really comes down to it the PS3 kicks ass all day. Just remember the PS2 still sells even today, but you won't find any old X-box on the shelf.

If your TV is 1080i, I would buy a HDMI to DVI adapter since they are essentially the same thing.

As of november the PS2 was still selling over a million consoles a year.

I've read somewhere that DVI inputs cannot pass sound through and that I would need a separate audio component. Has anyone ever dealt with this? They have cheap DVI to HDMI cables but can that take care of my audio too?

no, dvi is just video, so use the optical out or the regular cable that came with your ps3, the red and white plugs.

Just remember if your going from a HDMI TV to your standard TV u will have hold down the power button for 5 secs so it can read the TV b/c the ps3 doesn't wanna go down in settings unless u make it. I just went through that it took me forever to figure out what was wrong.
