Figure it's a good Valentine's day present for my wife. Our Celica is going into the shop on Saturday next week. Here's a recap of what happened.

Accident the day before Thanksgiving:

So what's being done??

The obvious:
New Hood, Front Bumper Cover, passenger side fender, Projector Low and High beams.

The not-so-obvious:
FULL paint job.
Shaved front marker lights.
Shaved door handles.
Clifford Matrix RSX 3.3 Remote Start Alarm System
DCW Ducktail spoiler is being molded in for a smooth transition.
5th Gen Power Mirrors being put on
3Post Spoiler holes being welded/smoothed
All the little dents/dings being removed.

And immediately after we get the car back:
DCW Gauge Face Cover (like in Dustin's car)
Finishing the Red/Black CF interior stuff
Kenwood DDX-812 going into the car

I'm going to try to get some stuff done before we take the car in, adn I'll be working on the car while it's in the shop. Will keep updating this thread as things progress. I'm SOOOOOOO excited that it's finally being fixed.

Very much looking forward to seeing this, was considering something custom along these lines myself.

Sounds like it will be an exciting project, have fun!

It's what I'm hoping for. We're actually planning on showing hte car, hence the full paintjob and custom stuff. I still need to figure out how to either clear the fog lights, or we're going to move to a PIAA fog or something that matches the clear highs/lows to finish the front off.

Forgot one other thing we're doing. The devil horn logo's on the nose/tail.......I'm having those sprayed instead of using the gel emblems.

Well, the Clifford alarm came in yesterday, so I took a look at the wiring when I got home. I'm normally pretty good with wiring but this is one freaking complicated sucker. I almost think it would be worth it to pay the local joint to install it for me. Still have to get solenoids and get them mounted/wired in too. Too bad my BGB isn't too detailed on the wiring pinouts and such........I"m pretty disappointed with it actually, and there's ZERO alarm system wiring info contained (but I've got enough to work with on line at least).

More to come. I've got 16 line lock kits to try to make tomorrow, and if I can get those done I can devote tuesday and thursday night to trying to get this wired in.

Got three 45lb solenoids ordered, those should be in around the end of the week. I think what I'm going to have to do is postpone the drop off at the shop until Monday night or Tuesday next week to give myself 2-3 days this weekend to do the alarm/solenoids. I have to pull the passenger fender to open the passenger door because it's so far smashed back, and that's going to take some time. I also think what I'm going to do is gut the interior and see if the factory alarm is piggyback harnessed in or if it's all spliced. I've found some info on the net that suggests the RS3000 alarm had an integration harness that was just mid-plugs. Would make it a SNAP to get out........

Either way, I'm planning on doing a good pictoral write-up on this alarm portion of things.

Ok update for the weekend:

Drivers door and hatch solenoids are installed. Have to strip the font bumper cover or at the very least the passenger fender off the car to open the passenger door and be able to put the solenoid in on that side.

Monday the car is going to a local installer for the alarm install. I decided NOT to do it myself as I don't have the time to devote to doing it exactly as I want. That, and I really don't feel like messing with it. I'm going to take a look tomorrow night at removing the factory alarm, but if I don't it's just going to be wired around and left inactive.

Monday night she's going to the shop and the work begins......

Ok, new Alarm is in and working sans the remote start. The company wouldn't hook it up in a stick even though the alarm is designed for it. The guy did my ignition harness stuff so all he left for me was to plug in the alarm supplied neutral safety switch and bypass the clutch switch. I'll be doing this after we get the car back from paint. Downside was that a quoted install at 3-4 hours took over EIGHT! So I sat in the shop all stinking day waiting. Good news was that it was a top notch install, very clean and neat. Door poppers all work.

I did get caught having to drive home at night with 1/2 my headlights. Fire the car up and wouldn't you know it, the one low beam headlight that's left blew out about 2 seconds after coming on. Just can't win. Guess I"ll have to upgrade to HID's. biggrin.gif

I'm leaning toward painting it because it wouldn't be a dirt trap. My wife however thinks that we should just spend the $65 on the new logo's because in her words, "they NEED to be raised to give it some depth."

Don't paint, or buy new emblems (good luck finding some anyways).

Try these: VINYL DECALS

Not airbrushed, just stenciled and painted on. If I get new ones they're going to be the gel emblems from LikwidArt in England like we got the last time.

Ok, so here's my update:

Body parts are running a little more than expected. No fault to slow_yota, but the hood I got from him was FUBAR. We both missed it. So.......

Via the guy doing the body work with his parts pricing hookup at Toyota:

Hood -- $341
Bumper Cover -- $232
JDM Clear High Beam (in stock in CA amazingly) -- $116
Extension Light Socket (accent light in Projector low beam) -- $6.00

More parts to come like seals and stuff I'm sure.

I have both the low beams in my hands, will be modding for a straight cutoff with a FULL pictoral as the write up here doesn't really show how everything breaks down.
High beams I'm hoping to do a CCFL Halo in each one.

We're currently looking at doing the gas cap shave now too. Up in the air on that though as right now I've got cash at hand to complete both the celica and my Vette with a tune...........

NOT deleting the antenna though, but it will be blackened out instead of left chrome.

I should see the car sometime next week, will get pics of progress when able. Fenders are reportedly already shaved of the side markers.

99. Just got a 377 CID LS3 shortblock, ported truck heads, lingenfelter GT2-3 turbo camshaft to go with my APS Twin Turbo's. Had an unexpected catastrophic engine failure last September with the TT on the car. Ripped the camshaft gear right off the cam, resulting in LOTS of piston to valve contact. Anyway, it's being started this week, so if I don't go hog wild on the Celica I can get it tuned later this month. Should make 700-750 RWHP @ about 12-14lbs of boost. Here's a pic:

It's all right. I actually (don't tell the Vette guys this) think that I like the Celica more because it just seems like it's a more fun car. The Vette I'm always cleaning, working on, touching something up, ect. But the Celica I can wash, dry, wax, and be happy. Plus, it gets a LOT more attention than the vette does.

Gorgeous!

I'm personally a fan of the much older vettes, but with no garage, I couldnt bring myself to own one and keep it outside. My Uncle used to road race them with SCCA, so I've naturally got a soft spot for them.

My wife and I had a thought last night. Considering that the entire car is going to be sprayed, we're thinking of having some metal flake added to the factory red paint for a little sprucing up. Anyone done this to the factory red, and how did it come out?

yup, a little red mica pearl looks great in the stock red.
its a very subtle look that only really shows itself in the bright sun, up close.

if you want somthing a little more flashy, go with a larger flake.

Good news. The ticket I got from the accident was thrown out before it even got to court. No car updates. Haven't had time enough to do a start to finish on modding the headlights in one sitting.

It was only a $75 ticket. I was contesting due to the BS factor. I got a ticket for "Failure to reduce speed." Whatever. Revenue generation.

Update -- Haven't seen the car, no reason to. Shop had a harley to finish up for a show, and it took longer than expected. No biggie. If things went as planned I'd have a tuned Vette sitting in my garage right now instead of it being just fired on Friday the 13th. So........

Took the headlights apart last night to mod them in prep for the HID's. I don't have a pot big enough to put the headlights in, so I first tried a sink full of hot water. Nope, not hot enough and I accidentally chipped the glass, but it's cool because it was just the edge. Ok, lets move to a large Wok on the stove. That did the trick. Had both lenses off in under 15 minutes. I've been taking some pictures along the way to make an EXTREMELY detailed write-up on how to do this because the one that's in the how to section just doesn't have enough clear and "big view" pictures IMO. I will say that the insides of these things are amazingly simply. Kind of hard to believe that they run $900 a set given what they are. I found that the factory used grey sealant comes right off with minimal scraping if you hit it lightly with a propane torch first too. Oh, and the factory had a blob of sealant on the chrome section of one light. I never noticed it before because I think it was hidden, but it scuffed it when I took it off. frown.gif

I have decided NOT to angel eye the high beam lights yet due to not having a car in front of me to see how much of the light is shrouded to figure out what size CCFL ring to get.

That's about it. I'm finishing the lights this weekend, and dropping them and some money off as my car is the #1 project now. I should see the car sunday, I know the side markers have been shaved already and that all hte new body panels are on location. More to come!

Given I can't get fired from one of my jobs, I would probably welcome getting canned from my pt time job. Would leave me a lot more personal time. What I was saying was that instead of having my vette just get fired up on Friday the 13th, I'd have it done and tuned sitting in my garage.

You can't get fired? That's nice security! I know the feeling about getting rid of the part time job... Its startin to kick my butt... But the extra income is really nice

I'm excited to see pics and stuff of what is going on!

Teaser pics:

Not much has been done. New high beam is in and what we need, along with the nose and hood. $750 in parts. frown.gif Headlights are modded with LDH cutoff's now, and after this weekend the car is the #1 priority in the shop. Paint chips are being done on the old hood with a few pearlcoats for our viewing pleasure this weekend, and if we don't like that then we're going to look at a candy or metallic version of the stock red. More to come!

More update: Handles are shaved, side markers are shaved, body work begins. He's hoping to have it primered and ready to paint by the end of next week. Here's some pics:

I fixed the SSIII splitter front mount. The fiberglass one broke in the accident, so I fabbed a new one today out of 1/8" aluminum and put it back in with rivets through the original rivet holes.

Some of the car:

Now the fun stuff. We're going different with the paint, but slightly. Here's what we're looking at, there are four different things going on here:

Top to bottom:
1 -- Light white pearl clearcoat w/candy red
2 -- Heavy white pearl clearcoat w/candy red
3 -- Copper pearl clear on base red
4 -- Painters own mixture, DEEP red with heavy flake.

1 and 2 are OUT.

The copper pearl on teh base red is INCREDIBLE. Out of the light it looks like factory red, but as soon as light hits it the copper metallic and pearl just jump out at you. EXTREMELY dynamic paint, just incredible. Downside to this color? The RED DVL licenseplate will kind of be a little lie at that point.

The deep red is gorgeous, but the flakes are extremely noticeable and REALLY stick out in the light. I have a feeling it's going to look too much like a boat if we did this color.

This really shows the copper pearl:

This shows how deep the front red is in dimmer light:

Here you can see how the right side of the copper section pretty much blends to the stock fender even though there still a bit of direct light on it:

Good look at the dynamics of the two colors. The copper one really changes a lot more.

The deep red, you can see how much metal flake is in it.

Another comparison:

One more:

So what do you all think?? Right now my wife and I are kind of battling over the copper or dark red. I want copper, she wants the red but is afraid it's too girly with all the metal flake and is also torn because she likes the copper too.

I love the copper pearlescent, but I'm a huge fan of the deep red. But ONLY if he can dial back the lame metal flake. A little metal flake is ok; just enough to give a car that "shiny"/"wet" look, but this much looks like somebody spilt a gallon of craft glitter all over your car while the clearcoat was drying... laugh.gif

I think copper is best. Although I like the red as well but as kaos said there is way too much flake in it. I think the red would be better with maybe 1/4 of the flake it has in it now.

The copper and the deep red are the only two we're looking at. If we went with the deep red we would DEFINITELY be toning down the metal flake to a more standard metallic mix. Right now we're both leaning towards the copper. We've got a couple of days to mull it over though.

oh wow. thats awesome. Personally, I'd go for ..... ummm.... flip a coin.
I agree on the way too much flake part. I say the copper unless everything in your interior is colored to match the red.
If you end up going with the copper, maybe you can talk him into retouching your wheels to match too.
but then again, that deep red is just so powerful.
I just changed my mind again, I'd go with the red with just a touch of flake.

Final answer, red.... maybe

Yes, but the flake in a silver color is much different than in a dark red...

you could ask him ( your painter) to try a smaller flake in the deep red, or red mica pearl, to achive the same effect that he did with the copper pearl, just with the red,... its extremely subtle tho.
i like the copper, looks stunning.

I think the idea to try the deep red with a smaller flake is a really good idea. It could look really amazing.

As it stands now, I say go for the copper. But I'd really want to compare it to the deep red with smaller metal flake in it. That big flake just looks kinda icky to me. It would probably look really cool on like a 70s Impala, but not quite right for a Celica.

Well......this may be all for nothing. I just got called yesterday with him saying "Oh yeah, meant to tell you, if you go with one of these customs it's going to be about $500 more." $500 that we don't have to dump into the project. He's checking into it to see if he can drive the cost down for us, but as of now it looks like it's going to be back to factory red. frown.gif More to come here, I've got a PS2 and some other junk laying around to sell so I'm going to try to scrounge up the money.

GAH!!! ramen noodle suppers to pay for the paint job. frown.gif

The factory red looks good too though. but it's tough to go to the factory color after playing around with those other custom ones.

I know the factory red will look good, but you hit the nail on the head. After seeing the copper metallic pearlcoat over the factory red, it's a hard pill to swallow.

The biggest problem is that we ran into a semi-big problem with the vette. Either the scavenge pump or the drivers side turbo seals went out. Either way, I'm looking at $350-1000 to fix depending on if its one, the other, or both.

Well, no pics, haven't seen the car since the last update. Talked to the body guy yesterday though, and I'm dropping off the accent bulb housings to him tomorrow before heading out of town tomorrow night for 10 days. He's telling me he should have it primed by the time we get there tomorrow evening, and already has the DCW spoiler molded in and set up and most of the little dents already straightened.

It's a matter of fact now that we will be going with the factory red. I had to drop $350 unexpectedly on a new oil scavenge pump for the Vette, and may have to rebuild the turbo's as both had oil pushed past the seals.

More pics to come sometime over the weekend most likely. Not really going to have computer access for a few days after tomorrow.

hmmmm I was thinking.... would it be possible to wait a bit and save the extra $500 to make it the color you want? It just seems to me, after you found the color you want, the plain red *although nice* isn't what you really what and will regret it down the road. Just my .02...... And you have pm my friend

wink.gif I know nothing!

Saw the car today, the trimmed bulb housings for the accent bulbs fit like a champ. But the biggest kicker is the DCW spoiler. It came out far and beyond better than I could have ever expected. Here's some pics:

That thing was molded in soooooo much better than I could have ever expected. The transition is completely smooth, it's as if the lip was a part of the car.

Ok, another minor update. Bodywork is done, all panels have been fitted and aligned, support repairs have been made (pulled, nothing replaced, came out pretty good), color is going to be laid this weekend. Threw a couple more pics of the spoiler cause I love it so much. My ONLY complaint is that for as well integrated as it is, there's an edge at the side to the quarter panel. We talked about building up the quarter panel to suit with filler, but problem there is if anything hits it there is the very realistic chance of it chipping. The bottomside edge of the spoiler isn't done yet, he's got a sealant to lay and sand that will blend it nicely, and he did a phenomenal job clearancing the spoiler for the third brake light.

Wow....ummmm.....wow. Got a call from the body guy tonight. He says "Hey, do you have time to come by and look at it?? I have the paint shot but the color came out different and I'm on the fence about it. I want you to make the decision on if we need to change it or not."

So we went up there..........pics to come in a little while.........

Here you go. The first batch is with the flash on the camera on to dampen the fluorescent lighting in the shop:

These were with the flash off to help bring out the color better in brighter light:

OH MY GOD is all I can say. My wife and I absolutely LOVE it. The copper effect isn't nearly as prominent but the red is just amazing in person.

This was with the base/clear and three coats of clear, last approx 1 hour old when we saw this. he's got lots of sanding and buffing to do but is anticipating the car being ready for pickup come the end of next week. Then it gets to hide in the garage while I complete a few "other" things and layer up some good old Zaino to really make it pop.
