I was driving last night and all of a sudden, the car would make this clacking/knocking(?) noise as I let off the gas and the noise would slow down as speed/RPM dropped. Shifting into 2nd or 4th gear, I would get a slight vibration in the shifter as I ease it into gear. I pulled over at a friend's house and looked around the transmission area and notice that bolt's kinda sitting on it's ass next to an opening. I put the bolt back into said opening and the noise stop. Before I do anything stupid, is there any significance to said bolt? Is it the opening to the tranny fluid?

that looks like the bolt for the tranny ground. nothing that should make the car make any noises.

It does look like the bolt for the tranny ground. Maybe the noise was coming from the bolt rattling around on the trans and once you put it back in the bolt stopped rattling around thus stopping the sound. Sounds like you did the right thing to me.

I've had this before, you need to have your car lifted up on a hoist and get the engine mounts checked. On my old Celica the engine mount threw out a bolt.
