I want to first start the thread with a link to my last thread http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=52431 This is my next big step from all that info.

Here is the story.
I was in love with my 5sfte I drove her with a smile on my face each and every day. After my exhaust feel off at the dwg meet my car started really smoking so at first Jim thought my ebay turbo had finally blown the seals and the oil was just blowing into the downpipe and causing a huge amount of smoke. Well after getting my exhaust fixed it just kept smoking..I should get a video to show u guys bc its bad.

Well Jim and I wanted to check to see if the compression was still good b4 I went and bought a new turbo and that's when we found out cly 2 had 60 compression.

SO we sat down and talked about options for a little while comparing different set ups and different ideas...and my biggest prob was if I had to have it rebuilt I wanted to do it big. So once I asked Jim his brother and Manny what they would do it was clear to me that I had to be a traitor and go to the 3rd gen 3sgte.

We looked for mr2 engine sets with the lsd e153 trans since Jim had spare st205 parts. That way I could have the same setup as Jim's pretty much bc I love how smooth his car drives even tho my 5sfte was more fun and felt faster for a small girl like me have such a smooth driving car is much safer.

Jim decided to go to the local place that sells sets and talk to the guy and this is were I got very excited and decided to start a thread to share my story and experience with this build with you.

At the moment this is what my setup will be:
WRC ST205 3sgte
e153 from a mr2t with lsd
custom turbo kit(no more ebay turbo)

As for now Ill be updating this little by little but it could be a little while b4 another big update..and you will have pictures of me doing work on the car bc ill be helping out with the swap for sure! I am also gonna try to get lots of detailed pictures with explanations!

My old setup is gonna be sold off so if u will be looking for anything please contact me but it might not be ready for at least a month to be shipped.

Here are pictures more to come once the rain stops!

Well I have been searching camry e153s for a few hrs now...

Jim originally thought it was lsd but after all this reading I found something that said all camry/solara come with open diffs.I'm not sure the year of my trans yet but it would really help my searching if i new the yr, Ill try to find out Friday when ill be able to look at everything and can get more info on the trans b/c I'm very intrigued by it all.

This is what i found out:

The camry/solara trans have a higher top gear and after 2002 they have different gearing but in 2002 its really an e351 trans.

I also read that the camry/solora have stronger syncros then the mr2t trans they have like triple syncros.(unless just the 2002 up e351 had the better syncros)

Over at mr2oc it seems like a lot of members have bought the camry e153 since they are stronger and have a higher top gear or just better gearing(depends on the year)and then they put in a quaife or trd diff which I think ill be doing. Also since the lsd e153 is pretty rare i guess this is an easier option for a lot of ppl.

does anyone have good info about the camry trans compared to the mr2?

gearing is
E153 3.230 1.913 1.258 0.918 0.731 Diff: 3.933, 4.285 (Camry/Solara V6 MT, MR2T)
E351 3.538 2.045 1.333 0.972 0.731 Diff: 3.944

post 93 E153 w/LSD are all over MR2oc. i just posted a WTB and had several responses. i just bought 2 of them. so they are out there. however i also suggest the 205 tranny and convert it. it will have the same syncros as the MR2 tranny. just get the cover plate and a quaife LSD and be good to go. plus the shifter linkage will be on the right side. MR2 trannies have the shifter linkage on the front

yea, shannon, all the camry/solara trannys are non LSD, but are already set up for FWD.
the one dustin is running is from a 99 or 00 camry IIRC, and shifts super smooth.
getting the LSD installed is typicly ~3-500$ depending on who does it.

the daily drivability of the gen3 is somthing that will be great for you shannon, since the car is your daily.
i love how docile and "normal" the 3rd gen feels just driving around at normal speeds in the city, then can just become a total beast with a push of your right foot.
good luck with the project, i hope everything goes smoothly for you!
if ya need somthing i can help with, just let me know.

Im going to post up the pictures from the place we got it since I can't take pictures bc the engine is covered and we have all this rain.

When we talked to the place we told them we wanted a e153 with lsd so Jim search the place for one with lsd and they didnt have one in so he told them he would take the camry e153. He talked to them again and they said they should have a lsd e153 in for us in a few weeks so we decided that since we are in no rush that we def don't mind waiting for an lsd trans.

Manny thank you...you are def on my speed dial once things get rolling and we are able to start working on this I am sure we will end up having questions for you. I wasn't that bent about having to put lsd in since Jeremy told me he could do it for me so it would just be the cost of the diff and we got a good deal on the whole setup but I was def wondering how much it cost to install if i had to go that route.

We were not sure if the shop used the same photos for listing there engines online so when Jim origanlly saw this engine he said it was WRC I didnt wanna get excited and post the pictures until I was sure they were the right ones and he was right this engine is WRC so I think thats pretty cool!

I am going to edit my first post with some pictures! Pictures are up!

When I read that they are rare it was some site over in another country Jim corrected me...For now since I got the e153 lsd trans I am gonna run that Jim's drives so nice so Im not worried atm about that...I also have the gt4 trans in my engine set but thats going to be put aside for a very possible future project.

goog luck with everything shannon, looks like you'll have your hands full these next couple of months...once you get it all in and together, you'll realize once you go the 3s route, you dont go back. It's just so much fun and the power is incrediable. Good luck and if you need anything just give a shout.

Judging by that video... You MIGHT have a problem. Lol. When you said it was smoking, I didn't think it was smoking that much.

Nice song in the background, by the way. tongue.gif

I have not updated in awhile but I will be soon.

First I am sad I was not really around to take any pictures but if you want pics of anything let me know I can get them.

Second our plans were get this engine in during a few days so we can move on to other projects but sadly life happened, I know I don't have to share but I am not one not to share so my Grandfather has recently been really sick so Jim and I have been going there to visit him and stuff. We also lost a close family friend due to Brain Cancer so we had the wake(viewing) and the funeral to attend to. I am only sharing bc I was not neglecting this post just things have been going on that pushed all this stuff aside.

Now that hunting season started Jim couldn't miss opening weekend and the weekend after so pretty much my poor car is just waiting to be finished.

By the end of this week I should have a better happier update wish me luck.

Jim had to do some stuff to the emspowered turbo kit to make it fit nothing crazy but he will be sharing.

I know Jim has been in touch with Tweak and Art the past couple days so thank you guys with what ever info you are sharing or advice you are giving...you can never have to much advice in my eyes.

Anyway so I was just doing some past research on myself and thought I'd share my history with celica's

I owned a 5th gen stock gt..turboed that lost a motor upgraded to the 99 and then sold the car bc the auto trans kept going
bought a 6th gen with a 2nd gen 3sgte then traded that car with Joey for a 6th gen 5sfte with my old turbo kit and now I will be driving a 6th gen with a 3rd gen engine and a different turbo kit...I have almost tried it all lol. but Thanks to Manny I have stuck around so long without him I prob would have moved along awhile ago. (Note I did not do all the work on these cars I had a shop and Manny and now Jim ~I get asked this often)

Ok well the good stuff will come soon smile.gif

Thanks Cali means a lot.

oh yeah the car purrs...its purring real nice...got it started and it sounds oh so sweet.

I was thinking about not updating anymore because it seemed like there wasn't much interest in this swap so I figured I would just leave this thread be..but since I have so many people who actually seem to be interested and just talk to me outside the thread Ill keep updating at least until I get a video of the car and a dyno sheet.

And thank all of you who are keeping up with the swap thread and have been giving me props or compliments elsewhere!

Tip #1.

Dont be so quick to doubt you own work. Double check that all connectors are SECURELY plugged in. laugh.gif

No, I was quick to think that the WIRING I did was the problems I was having. When it was just a lose fitting EA1 connector. I went threw my work about 20 times looking for error, and each time would come up with nothing.

I dont consider lose fitting connectors "new work" as much as I see it as things that should just be checked first when there is an electrical issue.

Went to the garage today and ran the motor for about 30minuts checking for leaks, and any noticeable issues....all is good. After the 30min run, I gave it a second oil change. Just about road worth now. Items left are installing the water lines for the IC, the heat exchanger, I have to get new rotors and pads, and put the body panels back on.

HAHAHA, that turbo is so big, I needed to grind a 1/4" off the transmission case just to get it to fit. It only took about 2 minutes with an angle grinder, and is easily done with the motor in the car. I had my doubts, but after seeing were it actually hit, it is VERY easy to get too. In fact, I did the grinding with the motor sitting in the bay.

This is an amazing looking, quality turbo kit....a lot of props to EMS powered for designing such an incredibly turbo kit for the 3SGTE. I cant wait to strap it down to the dyno.

ABSOLUTELY, the ST205 W2A is VERY efficient and clean. Shannon will be upgrading to a higher flowing pump tho....and possibly a larger front mount heat exchanger.

Props to EMS, but having to grind the trans down qualifies as a slight fitment issue. smile.gif

Yes, you are very much correct....but it is VERY easily fixed with an angle grinder. And this is only an issue for the GEN3. GEN2 clears with no modifications needed.

It's a very small mod that has to be made in the big scheme of things. As Jim mentioned, there's no clearance issues on the gen2 at all. And on the gen3, the S200 series and T3/T4 series of our kit require a small amount of material to be taken off for the Gen3 guys. You can even do it by hand with sand paper. It's very little material that has to be clearanced

I will post up complete pics of install, turbo kit, and the mod required to the transmission case when I am all done with the final version of the kit. It really is a small trade off for such a HUGE upgrade that is not offered by anyone else to date. And it LITERALLY only took 2 mintues with a 10$ harbor fright 4" angle grinder.

I can't wait to give you guys a update the car is sitting outside and all together except while test driving it Jim lost the clutch and has since gone hunting so once that is fixed it will be mine to drive smile.gif

Also after Jim had gotten it started but it was misfiring and stuff and after days of brainstorming and me telling Jim a story he wasn't listen to he said I figured is out lol. Since I was telling a story about work and not my car I was confused but he said he forgot to hook up the boost cut thing up i forget the name and once he did that and we found an exhaust shop it was running smooth besides the clutch going out.

Now the last thing is Baktash(emspowered) had to ship the external wastegate setup because the internal wastegate flapper is getting stuck. That should be here next week and then I will have my break in period and then the cars good to go and I can head to the dyno smile.gif

Little news on the 5STE engine:

I don't have pictures and I have yet to see myself but Jim and Joey pulled the Head off to check things out and they said huge chunks are missing from my piston..I think they said more then one piston. The ringlands are intact and everything else too I believe so far except the missing piston pieces. I'm not sure what caused it but I'm think detonation and its also probably why my spark plugs kept getting closed shut but I'm not sure. I have not been to the shop in awhle sice i havent had time but whne I got I am def. getting pics for everyone!

Looking forward to dynos with the external gate setup, your kit is the same one texas ace is running, right? You guys will have even better results with the better intercooling ect.
Do you know if you guys lost pedal pressure with the cluch, or will it just not go into gear or something?

Yea I think its the same setup as texas ace. If I remember correctly Jim said he was driving for a few miles and he couldnt get it in any gear. He said he stalled then put the car in first gear and babied it home. He didnt lose complete pedel pressure I dont think but I believe a little(i'm not sure) he said its not sitting on the floor. He also said it happen once before after he first was testing the car and he bleed the clutch again and the problem went away. I'm not sure if he's got to bleed it more or he said he might have to change the slave cylinder. Manny I can't wait to see the 5s either its locked in the garage and Jim has the key so I'm pretty excited to see it bc Joey said its really crazy to see.

i'm confused, i thought forever that the TMIC of the 3rd gen was inefficient, since all of the heat sort of got absorbed by it?

Is it true that the 3rd gen uses W2A intercooling (from the factory-through means of a TMIC) rather than a A2A FMIC?

Slightly off topic, but on tweaks convertible, did he do a W2A intercooler and just offset the intercooler so that it wouldn't be directly on top of the manifold/valve cover and get all hot?

Seems like the trend forever with 3rd gen swaps was to convert to a FMIC, is it going in the opposite direction now? B/c of less piping with TMIC, is it equally efficient? or is it just a pro and con to each?

sorry for the noob questions, I am confused between all the threads...

QUOTE (97celiman @ Dec 5, 2009 - 4:14 PM) *
i'm confused, i thought forever that the TMIC of the 3rd gen was inefficient, since all of the heat sort of got absorbed by it?

LOL this post is filled with so many confusions that its almost impossible to sort through it all.
To sum up my reply: No. smile.gif

I used the w2a because it works good and looks much cleaner in the engine bay imo. Also underneath there is lots of heat wrap so the engines heat never gets to it. We have plans to upgrade some things to make it better once we work on that ill update the thread with the info.

as for the engine pictures ypu can see at the bottom of this picture there are 2 peices missing off the piston.

Here are some more I need to get better pics but I just snapped them quick when I could.

Also we installed projectors but before I take any better pictures I gotta get the car all finished.

Cali, I meant that 300whp seems to be the questionable mark. Running a 5sfte on a stock bottom end at around 300whp just seems like your flirting with danger. CAN you make more then that, of course....BUT I personally dont think it will last, because I personally feel that 300whp is the "breaking" point of a 5sfte.

I say this due to recent events with Shannons and Manny's cars. Now, there is obviously no real "hp number" where a motor will break, so some may break at 280whp, and others may break at around 350whp...I just used 300whp as what I feel to be an average/expected/max limit of the stock 5s bottom end, from personal experience, and others misfortunes. How far you want to tune to, or PAST 300whp is entirely up to you, and as more and more people decide to do so, we will further confirm the limits of the stock 5s bottom end.

I thought Mstoochn was just joking. I guess there is something I'm missing here.

5sfe has more than proven itself over the years. If I had a gt right now, I would totally turbo it.

BTW, not sure what fits better on the Celica, but on the MR2's we're angling the screamer pipe like this. Let me know what works best for your setup. Beauty of our V-band design is that you can angle it in many different positions to clear obstacles that may be in the way depending on what other things are installed on your car:
