So I have a very solid block with 182K on it. The head was fully rebuilt several months ago. My car runs great, doesn't burn oil, and has great oil pressure. I was wondering...how much WOT driving can I get away with? Not the floor it from a dead stop either wot. I usually take off at an average pace and then WOT it from 2nd through 4th. Is this going to kill my motor quickly?

The harder you drive it, the more wear you put on it. at 180+k id say there is a fair bit of wear on it already.

Just do regular oil changes, aslong as you don't drop the clutch or do terrible gear changes, don't keep thinking your engine will die when your floor it.

Good to know, I had my head rebuilt this past march/april with t-belt, w-pump, port and polish, and full exhaust. It's built to have fun (mildly). I just want to know I can actually 'have' fun without killing it. My block runs at 51 PSI on the highway. That's good, so I shouldn't worry about it.

its in the owners manual
![]() of course you dont wanna stress the internals. imagine running WOT with your lubricants cold, your engine and gear oil dont reach the operating viscosity thus making the internals work a lil harder. -------------------- God made man....

Rev limiter yes but isnt the rev limiter pass the red line? idk what rpm exactly it is. but IMO try not to get to the red line as much possible. -------------------- God made man....

Mine starts right at 6200, the exact start of my actual redline. I've always wondered, if you up injectors, can you successfully up your rev limiter? -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.

ummm i hit 135mph on the I-15 south from fallbrook to san diego all i had was a air temp mod, cold air intake, and exhuast(2 1/2 inche pipe). no fuel cut off occured just the rev limiter kicked in and wouldnt let me pass 6,800 rpms this is what i've got from searching around. not sure if injectors have a play in the rev limiter but ecu maybe. In theory, The rev limiter is only there to make sure that your engine isn't being starved for gas at higher RPMs which causes a ton of friction/overheating your engine/frying your rings. If you put on a better fuel pump, larger injectors, and re-tune your ECU, in theory you should be able to up your redline. Correct me if I'm wrong. -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.

being starved on gas?? idk about that.
here's a wiki link might be helpful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev_limiter if you can, could you put up an actual video from your celi? -------------------- God made man....

Heh, Talked it over with a friend, I was completely mistaken. Red lines are there for a reason, the crank, bearings, wrist pins, etc. are only balanced up to 6200 or whatever your red line is. When you go over this, you have a much more likely chance of your engine becoming un-balanced and cause major wear to your internals. I actually now know exactly why the rod bearings went out on my bike, I somehow got my rev-limit upped considerably and would run the engine extremely far into redline (roughly 2000rpms over) and then shift into the next gear. So lesson learned, don't ever run your engine past red line... -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.

So in theory, if I had my block rebuilt and then had the crank polished and balanced, then I could run over the redline a bit right?

You would have to have ALL internals set up for higher RPMs, ie. replacing/resurfacing/re-forging all internals.
Wouldn't be worth the money in my opinion, unless money is no option and you have a car collection that rivals Jay Leno's... -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.

I have a rather large amount of money available, I may give it a shot after all. I'm not into buying a car, fixing it, and then selling it quickly. I will hold onto this celica for years to come. I prolly wouldn't use forged internals though. Maybe hyperstetic pistons. I believe forged pistons will rock unless they are combined with forced induction.

Whenever I get on the highway. Regular driving, I'd like to shoot for 50%. Right now...maybe 20%. Why do you ask?

It's going to cost thousands of dollars for you to get your internals remade, and balanced for higher RPMS. -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Forget that then. I just want to wot it maybe up to 5500 rpm then but I don't want to have to worry about it too much. I ordered the mild set of webcams and they give the best performance at wot through the power band up to 6K from what I was told.
My main interest is if (with my block at 182K and it is in great condition) with the webcams install, can I wot it whenever I want to (as long as I don't redline it) without causing damage? This post has been edited by 6G96GT: Oct 20, 2009 - 2:16 PM |

yes, WOT < redline + in operating temp. should be fine.
sounds nice going to the freeway huh. -------------------- God made man....

Nics, thanks for all your help! Yeah, it sounds great on the freeway. I never (if you could believe this) floored my celica before recently and I've had it for almost 2 years. Once I floored it, it had a very nasty rumble sound at around 3200 rpm through 4500 rpm and it has a great pick up too. Now I can't seem to drive it regularly because it's too much fun!

yep, i love it uphill when rpm go at 5k and yeah great pick up and you always wanna stay there but sadly it hurts my fuel economy so thats why i do it before fuelling up.

Don't floor a cold engine - It's basic science, things shrink when they're cold and expand when they're hot, if your engine shrinks around the piston and piston rings then obviously there is increased wear as its a whole lot tighter (probably not far off from seizing and you notice how the engine feels heavy before it warms up), this in combination with oil not being at operating temperature will provide less lubrication, hence oil has 2 parts to the viscosity rating - one at cold one at operating temp.
The rev limiter - It's made up of many factors, For one theres no point revving past the redline with stock cams, Look at a dyno curve with stock cams and aftermarket cams and you'll see why -- it's like revving down, power is at the top of the curve, revving past the curve is essentially decelerating. Secondly in order to keep producing power in the high revs the engine needs to be high compression (the FE engine is not.) Third and most importantly since there is no point in revving past the redline (and especially with an FE engine) the engine internals are not designed to cope with the extra stress -- as mentioned balancing and all that crap, bore and stroke ratio, total amount of stroke, etc. These factors come into play well before any fueling issue should arise unless the fuel filter is clogged or something. There is no reason why you can't floor your engine from 0 to the redline if you look after it, nomatter what it's age but hard driving on a cold engine is a sure fire way to f*ck it! -------------------- Mike W

^^it has been discussed to run it on operating temps.
nice info on rev limiter and i agree you can floor your car. did it too a number of times, just not pass redline. -------------------- God made man....
