HI, Im new to this site so not sure on some slang words you use lol (rotor?????)
Straight to the point, put new handbrake cable on passenger side as old one had seized and burnt out my shoes, so I changed the shoes on both sides. Problem I have now is no matter how I adjust the each drum and the h/brake cable at the h/brake the brakes wont hold the car from going backwards, it holds it going forwards but not back. Im not a newbe to this type of car, its my fourth celica, 2nd Gen 6, the best model ever!!! I have a repair Manuel which is american but still very good, I have followed all it says in there with no result.Im no thicko when it comes to cars but this has stumped me and I dont want to through my money towards Mr T who charges far to much lol. PLEASE HELP ME, THANKS ![]() ![]() |

Did you adjust BOTH sides when you replaced the cable? You should adjust the e-brake shoes on both rear wheels. Then you may need to adjust your brake handle itself, it's quite easy, there's a screw beneath the handle that adjusts the tension. You should be able to pull your brake handle up about 8 clicks for proper tension.

Then either something isn't installed properly, or the shoes you just replaced have way more meat on them than the other side, and they're rendering the other side kinda useless. You should be certain to adjust each wheel individually, meaning don't mirror the adjustment you did to the side w/the new shoes to the side with the older shoes. The older shoe side will probably need more adjusting to compensate for being more worn.

Did you do the adjustment as per what the book said about how many clicks to turn the adjustment screw/wheel/pokey thing of death thingie? If so, at this point my next step would be to scrap what the book says about "how many" clicks to turn the sprocket; I'd just tighten the m.f. down all the way until the wheel doesn't move, then back it off until the wheel moves with some effort. The number of "clicks" may not correspond to what the book says, but ultimately that's where you need to be is to where the wheel moves with effort.
You're adjusting the shoes with the e-brake pulled up, right? -------------------- ![]() |

the e-brake handle should be down when adjusting the sprocket. when i did mine, i had the handle down, and the sprocket turned and adjusted just enough that i was able to fit the brake discs back on (if you turn it too much, the brake shoes are extended out too far to put the discs or rotors back on... too little, and it will take more clicks with raising the e-brake handle to engage the e-brake) it was so close that i felt the brake shoes rub against the brake disc when putting it on... and with that setup i get a pretty good lock on the e-brake at 3 clicks while a normally working system is 4-7 clicks with the handle. maybe yours just isn't gripping hard enough??
btw, make sure to grease up every joint or connection and every moving object in there because the e-brake system usually fails because a component has seized. that's how mine went bad. other than that, i'm stumped as to why it will hold from going forward but not backwards... -------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
