GT-4, yes, that's what it's made for.

any of the FWD Celicas, meh. It's possible, but much tougher. Stick to the road.

You CAN rally anything. AWD cars are usually the best for obvious traction reasons. What sor of rally do you intend on doing? navigational? rally-x? rally sprint?

celicas are definitely fun on dirt especially with a stiffer rear sway bar tongue.gif, but obviously not as good as AWD cars. GT-4's are good although they had lots of problems with the super strut in WRC.

I've proven that wrong. If your gonna baby the car don't even bother. If you wanna make it a pure dirt machine then it might work, but might as well get an awd since traction wont be your friend on rocks and mud.

i rallycross my car and take it out to the desert as often as i can. the car does surprisingly well. i run in the street stock class, so all i am allowed to have is a k&n drop in filter and a catback exhaust, thus i have no suspension mods on the car when i compete. the car does rotate well with left foot braking. hell i took second place this past season for the championship with a st and an auto trans. my car is no show car, and i really don't care what it looks like, but at the same time it doesn't look too horrible. minus the dents, its actually not bad looking at all.

its fun, but if you're trying to keep it looking show quality, then you might not enjoy the experience near as much. i'm really happy with my $700 celica and even with rallying the car, i haven't spent much at all on replacing parts. alot of the parts i've replaced were original parts on the car and it has 203,xxx miles on it, so thats not bad at all. so far my list is 1 wheel bearing, driver side cv axle, driver side lower ball joint (boot was torn), and the power steering pump. thats it.

thats what a lot of guys have to start out in when they move to WRC. usually when they are younger, and i think the current rally driver/god sebatian loeb started off in the production fwd cars. i'll have to go back and look, but off the top of my head i think he did. fwd is actually a great platform to learn how to drive in the dirt before going to an awd with more horsepower. teaches you how to use your speed and better at teaching you how to over come situations without relying on awd or power to bail you out. makes you a better driver in my opinion. similar to learning better driving techniques on street tires in autox vs getting an amazing set of sticky street tires or slicks. the better tires mask your mistakes and allow you to use your bad habbits where the regular street tires force you to become a better driver.

Don't understand what you're saying here, because if you had a Turbo 4WD you would be driving at much higher speeds than your FWD could ever realise. I'm sure skill would come into play more so when you have to think twice as fast.


EDIT: And doesn't the confidence inspiring FWD Celica really teach you poor throttle off, throttle on cornering techniques? The kind that will get you in trouble with a high power RWD or 4WD?

He was saying his techniques have greatly been improved because he can see/learn his mistakes instead of masking them with power and grip, thus giving a better overall driver in the long run, especially when upgrading to such a powerful beast wink.gif.

Where in the US can I get into dirt racing like that? The only rally the SCCA does around Kansas is road rally, where you're timed on following the speed limit and directions from place to place.

And what kind of tires are you running?

So much so they didnt use superstrut with the WRC cars smile.gif

6th Gen Celicas do not make brilliant rally cars...the 5th Gen made a better Rally car...with the 6th Gen, the overhangs are too big and the forward vision was restricted by the huge bonnet bulge...if you read up any reports from TTE Rally drivers when they moved to the ST205 they didnt like them too much. Corollas and 185s were considered better.

If you want to go into amature rallies you want a small car (shortish wheel base) with small overhangs.

Ha thanks, I just found the Nebraska one. There's a chapter out of Wichita, Kansas I found that just started doing rallycross at the end of last year. They both hold their events about 3 hours from where I live, so that's definitely do-able.

i believe that if a driver jumps on a different layout from whatever he's currently using i.e. ff, fr, mr, awd and races with it, im sure the driver is aware that every platform has different handling/characteristics.

i wouldnt say throttle off/on in a ff cornering is a poor technique rather its one technique used in conering ff cars

I was just surprised you could have much success with FWD in the dirt. Then try to understand why he thinks FWD makes u a better driver than 4WD?

4WD can eat FWD for breakfast without even trying that's a given, BUT it's once you push those speeds higher than the limits of FWD will allow, that nothing at all has prepped you for controlling the additional power going to the rear wheels as part of steering.

Ok so I want to give it a try, first event nearby that I can go to is on March 14th. What do you think I should do to prep the car? And will my all-seasons with not so much tread work well enough to give me a feel? If I like it I would probably put some decent all seasons on, or snow tires and get another set of wheels for the street.

I'll probably buy/make some cheap mudflaps to protect my paint, pull the ABS fuse, and just give the car a tune-up.

I was thinking about doing it, too. Looks like loads of fun. But rocks flying in the air and a good paintjob and a body with no dents don't mix...

I figured if I wanted to do that type of stuff, I'd buy another Celi or something for cheap and use that. Not my perfectly painted, dent-free 6GC. Haha.

But if you do decide to go, post pics!

I think that the initial comments were basicly saying that 4wd is more forgiving of mistakes made my novice drivers. so when you're learning basic driving techniques, what may seem like a huge area you need to work on in a FF car, will be mostly covered up in a 4wd car, and therefore won't get the attention that it would have otherwise gotten.

The short answer about what makes you a better driver is ...... seat time.
the more seat time you have, the better you will get. the more platforms you race on, the more comfortable you'll be on those platforms.

I'll definitely post pics. I'm not too worried about the paint, my car is pretty dent free but the paint is far from perfect; wouldn't be able to keep it nice if I wanted to driving over 100 miles every day. Plus before the event I'll remove my sideskirts and put on some cheap mudflaps just to help protect the paint.

If it does become a bigger hobby, I'll pick up an old Subaru or something that I don't mind beating up.
