So I may have the opportunity to trade the Celica straight across for a 91 MR2 turbo. It has 132k on it, and a few mods. Interior is a little rough compared to my car, but it does have lower miles since the 99 will be hitting the 160k mark. My biggest hang up is the age of the car, plus the reduced gas mileage and increased maintenance cost; but I've always wanted one, and would love something RWD again.

I know there are some big MR2 fans here, would you trade your Celica for one? Even if it's 8 years older?

QUOTE
The car has 132,XXX miles, its fresh black paint done professionally in july of 2009. It has JDM solid side moldings, Euro front signal lenses, a TRD short throw, factory fogs, Berk exhaust, a Berk down pipe goes with it, a manual boost controller from 2's R us, JDM power fold setup go with it. It needs new ebrake cables, a shift boot, other than that its solid seats are rough but interior otherwise is clean. This car starts, and drives everyday, Ive owned it almost a year. I got it from old man in Kansas oddly enough. Its a T-top car. Since I got it I put a passenger rear wheel bearing in, rear brakes, a new alternator, and battery. The asking price is 4500. Lower offers mean I keep some parts. I will consider trades....Here she is...417-850-7700

K trades I'm looking for are Honda crx eg/ek hatch something along those lines but all offers will be considered...for the right car I would throw cash your way

The Car is DRY in these pics, Im not a photographer so they suck but it is what it is...Thanks for looking.

Dude, if I didn't plan on going awd, I would have done it (But I have two mr2 turbos anyways now, lol). That berk exhaust is like $600 bucks alone, and if it has the downpipe, we can total that well around $800+. If it runs fine, I would do it. Test drive it, you might find you will really like it. Lots of us have MR2s now for a reason.

I say go for it, if you're looking to move away from the Celica, might as well stay in the Toyota family. This guy is an absolute moron though...why would ANYONE want to go from an MR2 to a Honda CRX? mad.gif

Please take it off his hands. The seats just need some covers and you need a new shift boot; you could see if Vincent's covers for the 6GC work.

faster, lighter, RWD and still a Toyota. Definitely go and check it out beforehand for rust and to see how it runs, but it seems like a nice deal to me.

I'd do it, mainly because I DID do it. Shift boots are cheap. Mine has holes in it because the linkage hits the boot. That mr2 has the trim, you just need to wrap a boot around it. And its a t-top car, so the seats are going to have sun damage. Leather cracks and cloth seats sort of melt/harden on the side bolsters. That is all standard wear and tear - especially it the t-top shades are missing, which most people are. The e-brake is a REALLY common problem. Mine froze in November/December when it was -11 here. $100 for new lines and they're easy to get to. Just check the underbody for rust and put your head down into the trunk and smell for mold. Pull the trunk liner and check for rust. Make sure the t-tops don't leak. If they do its no big deal. $150/side for the door seal and T-top seal. Mine leaked a bit and I put offset eccentric guides in (the pieces that guide the pins from the t-top into the car). The holes are offset so the tops have to press further down and out towards the window to lock. This sealed the window to the t-top and no more leak! Cost me $7 from the dealer. There are a handful of useful stickies on mr2.com for buying your first MR2 outlining what to check for. Go check it out.

Overall I am much happier with my MR2 than I was with the Celica. Much sportier drive, comfortable interior, and the cult following. Tons of enthusiasts with lots of info to share. The only trade off is that the engine is kind of difficult to work on, but if it has been maintained you won't need to be in there more than once a week to check up on things.

Haha thanks for the input guys. I would LOVE to have both, but the money just isn't there for it. I'm going to see if I can check it out tomorrow. I love the Celica, and have thought about doing a 1mz swap, but the MR2 is just such a better platform for performance.

EDIT: and the MR2 is definitely the heavier car. If I remember right the N/A is about 2500 pounds, and the turbo is just over 3000.

no, if you trade for a MR2 you are a trader. If you own a MR2 and have a celica, you are a trader.

i was thinking 7m... inline 6... 1m amd 3m are both vee.

why are you a trader if you trade a celica for an mr2? those are really fun cars...! i don't see your logic.

not sure i would do a v6 swap... 3s is the answer for the celica... 5sfte isn't bad either...

If you're just looking for opinoins, I'll voice mine. I say Don't. But here's my reasoning. I've driven 6gcs and I've driven SW20s. Personally, SW20s are an awesome weekend cruiser and track car. Very uncomfortable for a daily. They are cramped with NO space for daily necessities that you would need. If you have a 2nd vehicle as a DD, Hell ya go for it. SW20s are a very fun car, but not practical. Not to mention a PITD to work on lol

So you got an awsome GT4, AND a nice MR2.

Wanna swop for my 96 ST? smile.gif It got a kicking stereo though tongue.gif To bad things are so expensive in norway. I've spent like 3-4 times the money to get where u guys are. Atm im at a total of 18.000$ spent on my 96ST. Car was 11.600 $. Thats what a totally stock ST costs in Norway. Sux. Imagine what i could have had for that amount of cash anywhere else in the world. I disagree. My MR2 is very comfortable for a DD and isn't cramped at all. What daily necessities do you require that the 6GC provides and the MR2 doesn't? Only things I can think of is back seats (when you DD you're typically riding solo anyways) and no cup holders (cupholder install is well documented on mr2oc). I can pack a full cart of groceries neatly in the trunk with no problems. I recently went on a camping trip where my girlfriend and I packed a cooler and our gear in the trunk and firewood in the frunk (minus mini spare tire, but who uses them anyways). I easily rack up 100 miles A DAY in the car for work, generally hauling a Point Of Sale system or two and I don't have one complaint. I am not saying your opinion is wrong, but I suppose I would like it if you could ellaborate a bit for me.

If you are single, go for the MR2. The only bad thing is, you only have room for 2 women (one on the other's lap in the passenger seat). People in the back seat cause accidents, accidents in the back seat cause people.

Secondly, the MR2 is going to dramatically increase in value in just 9 short months. In 2011, it will be considered a classic which can be beneficial to you if you do decide to resell. In just a short period of time you can get a return on your investment and afford a very nice 6g or a 6g+swap with the profits.

Last but not least, it is a whole other world. I love my Celica and my MR2 equally but for completely different reasons. Its like trying to say you love your sister more than your brother.... they're your siblings and you love them both- but for different reasons. I say drive it first, make sure its something that suits you.

Exactly. My mechanic has an MR2 and I think it's comfortable, but maybe it's because it's a fun car. I'm 5'8", though. I would say it's a bit cramped compared to a 6GC, which has a lot of leg room and rear decoration seats (who te hell fits there?). Isn't that funny? You ride in any recent car and then ride in a 6GC and you feel like in a can of tuna. It's just small inside. But then you ride in an MR2 and the Celica feels like a Maybach. laugh.gif
