Celica's Fuel Economy, MPG and 100km/L Options

Alright I hope this clears up any misconceptions on what our cars was getting. Some of the people on this board have gotten outrageous fuel economy, which in turn has discourage other members into believing how bad of a condition their car is in.

First off, fuel economy has many factors that effect it. Some of these factors are age, health, weight, how you drive, model (to some degree) So please take these things into consideration when reading this chart.

I hope this information has been of some used.

*This information was taken from Toyota's specification sheet. I was able to duplicate it with rights, while I was a part-time parts representative.*

Its not my typical DIY but its pretty damn useful. aha

- my celica was getting 12.8L/100kms (I had a half a dime size hole in the front pipe) it was recently replaced with another used pipe. I am now getting 10.8L/100kms mixed of highway and city driving + lead foot aha LESSON TO LEARN: FIX YOUR EXHAUST LEAKS!!!

I only ever get as bad as 10.5 If I use ****ty fuel and floor it everywhere if I use good fuel and drive normal I get 9 litres per 100km.

i usually do 600 km with 47l, so an average of 7.8l per 100 km. i drive half city/half highway everyday.
my record was a little over 800km with 55l, 3people inside, trunck loaded to max, so an average of 6.8 l/km.

fill your tank then drive 100 miles then fill your tank again , note the amount of gallons you had to refill with, then divide miles by gallons and it will tell you your mpg

anddd the 2011 v6 mustang weighs 3580lbs with a 180 pound driver..and the celica ST is like what, 2500lbs? come on now are we really going to argue this?
esp when my old 94 mustang 3.8 v6 got 16 mpg city with a 10 gallon gas tank.. ya 160 miles to a tank, which is y i drive a celica now lol.

oh and the 2011 v6 mustang runs 14.33 on the 1/4 mile with 240 stock rwhp.. not to bad out of a 3500 pound stock v6 that has 19/31 mpg at 305 hp im a mustang guy by heart

Heres the thing you have to consider "thruway" mpg. In my case highway is 55 and thruway (depending where you are) is 65. If I drive at highway speeds I can get over 40mpg or around that, and if I drive at thruway speeds I can get high 30's. with a small amount of city driving, along with going up and down mountains, added with going about 70mph I was able to travel 300+ miles on about 9-10 gallons of fuel, so I avg. a little more than 30mpg. Anyone has similar results?

I got a 98 manual and the best I ever got was about 30mpg highway driving down in Florida and I was driving highway for hours at a time.

I know this is for real, being I charge my employer mileage, and get my gas receipts paid back.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the tank is 16 gallon. So you were getting 27-30 mpg which is typically what I get.

do not drive your car till its gets to e or until the gas light shows up. It's recommended by the manufacture of all car companies to keep your gas tank filled above the quarter line. This way your fuel pump is always being cooled by the fuel inside the gas tank!!! or else your fuel pump will eventually seize over time...

10 litres per 100km is great for normal driving! I wouldn't be able to help boosting it EVERYWHERE so its probably lucky I have a godawful 5SFE lol.

Hi, Guys! Well I just calculated my MPG and I am doing city driving 22.7 MPG. Not so good comparing with most of you, pals!
I just got a new Oxigen sensor=denso by the way, i noticed better MPG but i should be around 26 or 27 MPG. So what i should do to my car to get a better MPG. My spark plugs are new, cables are about 40000 miles old(NKG), new air filter, 30000 miles ago I changed dist cap and rotor. Also my EGR valve is not working properly, i got an engine code=insufficient flow. Do you think that if i clean it, I can get better MPG. Any other suggestion would be appreciated! My celica has already 170000 miles and leaking some oil.

Best i ever had with my 94 st is 6.6 l/100km on highway with a lightly damaged piston ring (185psi comp beside 210 for the others). So i guess those numbers are good and/or my 6gen is still in good shape afther all. I think she usually drinks 7.7l/100km for summer all around performances.

I always take mine down to E and always calculate my mileage when I fill up. All stock 94 St with 240k miles. I have never needed a fuel pump and ain't worried about it at all. Honestly, how many electric motors do you folks know of that have seized because of not being submerged in a liquid? I'm thinking like ZERO!

I do wish I could get over 30 mpg. 40+ sounds ludicrous.

I totally agree. my 94 gt gets babied by me. 75% highway, 25% city i'm lucky to get 29-30mpg. I got 37 one time on a trip to Long Island through the mountains. I was following my step dads truck with a big trailer full of steel on it to do a job. 37.6 mpg due to DRAFTING. So I guess we shouldn't drive fast and we should always follow semi-trucks.

HOWEVER, if you look at my profile you'll see my recent deer accident, post accident (new plugs, wires and distributor) i got 32 pretty easily..... for two weeks
I think I had my timing a little advanced and after the computer "fixed" that by retarding the timing, i'm back to 28.75 mpg. See here for the confirmation

I got 340 miles from a full tank driving streets only!! all the way till the gas light turned on. When the Gas light turns on it means you have two gallons left right???

So 340 miles (street miles) divided by 14 gallons = 24.5 miles per gallon when shifting between 2,500 rpm and 3,000 rpm. I always keep my speed at 45-50mph max while on the streets.

i'd say thats not too bad...

Just an updated on my situation; I'm getting between 300 and 375 miles on a 12.5 gal fill-up - the lower number the more I drive in the city and the higher number the more I drive on the highway. I'm averaging between 27 and 34MPG usually.

Only recent work has been new intake, new battery, header, and bottom o2 sensor replacement.

Here in Okinawa where there is no real freeway longer than 80km(ish) I do mostly city driving. Couple that with a heavy foot at times and my MPG isn't so hot. For a 98 BEAMS with an auto tranny and just an intake, over the last 8 months, I averaged 21.6 MPG!

likely not much. The energy needs of the car to push through the air at any given velocity are the same no matter what transmission you have.... I'm sure there is some to be gained, but does the 7a have enough torque to run a 6th gear that is presumably higher?

The internal drag of the engine and transmission would be reduced with a sixth gear. This is why you arent cruizing around in third or fourth.
The engine is creating alot more friction and heat with its internals spinning faster.

Windage, oil pump, driven accessories, like I said you dont drive in 4th because its too much work for the engine. My 5SFE could handle another gear, Im in 5th at 30mph

7afe is an A series engine
2zzge is a ZZ series engine.

THe c60 transmission will be a direct fit onto the 7a engine. You'll need the Toyota Levin BZ-R 6 speed transmission, which is a C160 transmission that comes stock with a helical lsd.

got to remember guys that when these original Estimated gas mileage were put out they would NEVER reflect what could be had in the real world. it was a number given under optimal driving conditions in every way and more like ricer math than a representation of what mileage you could expect from the car.. .. that's why the revisions were made a few years back to what manufactures post as city/highway mileage. current estimated gas mileage include regular start stop driving habits of city driving, the need to pass at highway speeds and not just stay at a constant optimal speed, the use of the A/C system is also included in the newer mileage estimates. and if i am not mistaken i believe that newer mileage estimates are based on an average highway speed of 80mph, and not the old US federally mandated standard 55MPH.. all of this makes a difference. today's standards are much more demanding of the manufactures but also represent an attainable MPG.

it has been almost 20 years since the first 6g-celica has rolled off the line, and technology has come a long way and advanced, all the wile the cost to implement it on a platform has gone down..
if the car were to be made w/ today's technology applied to it, with today's MPG rating standards being the measuring stick, i am confident in saying that the ST would be a 35-40 highway car and the GT a 30-35 highway car.

wile accounting for the fact that the car would most likely be about 200 lbs heavier from all the new safety equipment, most of that added weight would have been shed as there is more use of aluminum in cars today. (so really about the same weight). the motor it self would be a completely different daemon. wile staying in line with the original design goals and nature of the 7aFE, today's incarnation of the 7aFE would most likely be like a baby 2AZ-FE.. incorporating twin cam variable valve timing, a slight increase in compression ratio, longer power band (and the gearing to go with it). if it were made TODAY it would also most likely have direct injection.. all of this would give you a car that has 180hp (or close to it and only if it had direct injection, this estimate is based on what toyta's new DI motors are getting for volume to power ratings.)and a real world 35-40MPG highway... oh and the car would be in the same price point segment as it was when the 6gc was first on the lot..

yes sure all of that last paragraph is just talk and conjecture, but it is just to prove a point that the old MPG ratings were complete crap, and that even now, with the newer more stringent standards on MPG and engine power ratings, if the 6G celica were made today, the original 35-40 highway MPG goals WOULD be attainable..

They would do what they did back in the day. The ST would get the Corolla engine and the GT would get the Camry engine. So, the Celica would get what they get more or less. Maybe a little less due to sportier gearing for the Celica. I wish they'd come back out with the Celica. I'd make it my next car in a heartbeat. Hopefully with Toyota getting back to how things were, we'll see a new Celica soon.

3sge beams in a 1999 celica gt got a combined 28mpg on city and highway.
Im using 91 octane here in California and kept my rpms at under 3500 rpm. all at under 1,000 feet above sea level

I remember seeing that on Mythbusters. If you're feeling particularly cheap and adventurous if you draft within a few feet you'll get great gas mileage.

I did 35 mpg yesterday. 55 to 65 mph travel speed. At 70 I get about 31. Most of the time I'm about 32.5 mpg.

I travel between two cities here in NC very frequently (about once a month). At no more than 3k RPM and traveling no faster than 70 mph I managed to get 45.5 MPG at my best - while 42 has been my average. People say blasting the heat and drafting off semi trucks doesn't net an MPG increase, but that was when I achieved 45.5 MPG. The trip is 166 miles in total, so the calculations are averaged out enough. Of course this trip is all highway. I'm always engaged in project maximum MPG!

5 tanks into ownership, getting between 520-580km per tank depending on how i drive and how
how long i drive with the gas light on. i'm confident I can break 600km and maybe even reach 700.
Just haven't made a long-distance trip yet.
Average is 27mpg.
Much better than my old Maxima at 19mpg.
Missing that v6 power though...

55-60 generally is the most efficient highway speed. I can't help but feel at times our cars need a 6th gear though.

You are actually traveling faster on bigger rims than what the speedometer says. Therefore really getting more kms/ tank than you think.

When i use my 17" rims with 225/45 tires my speedometer gives me the actual GPS speed. When i drive 120 km/h it's really 120 km/h. When i use my winter rims 15" with 195/60 (or so) tires then i drive about 130 km/h on tacho which is a 120 km/h gps speed.

With the 4AGE 20V blacktop my mpg is the same as with the 7AFE about 28+ mpg with 17". This is mainly short distances and 120 km/h on the highway and sometimes take it to 8200 rpm . The best mpg i ever did was with the blacktop. A 350 km drive and it was almost 36.5 mpg!

I'm really curious if the blacktop will be even better on mpg when my C160 gearbox is in

Was this a self test? Because I have a 5sfe with a s54 tranny and I get around 22 in the city and 27 highway. Also this original paper info I found in my glove box seems accurate to what I typically get also.

My GT4 gets around 28mpg during mixed driving but if im driving hard i will average about 18mpg

the only mods i have are a apexi exhaust and sard intake everything elses is stock

I typically get about 22 MPG in driving that is entirely in city-like traffic mostly in the lower gears with an A/T. On the hwy it's closer to 30 MPG.

But mine's a 'vert that's driven only in summer, and always with the top down, unless it's raining.

I don't think these numbers reflect the convertibles. My 95 vert gets 25 mpg average. I filled the tank up on two separate occasions and noted the mileage at full and at empty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the vert is the heaviest of the bunch as well.

I got 29mpg combined city and highway. In the city I never went over 2600 rpm and highway never went over 3600 rpm

This was all done with 14 gal of gas with 410miles

My 94 ST manual with 300,000 miles gets 30 mpg in the winter, with about 50/50 highway to city miles. Rest of the year I still get about 34 mpg.

my 5spd GT with the 5sfe gets around 25 mpg. I get to 1/2 tank at about 200 miles, and the light comes on around 325 miles, and it takes about 13 gallons to fill it back up. I keep thinking that I am going to drive around and not accelerate hard and keep it below 3k rpm, and then I say to hell with it spin it all the way up anyway.
especially since I replaced the motor mounts, now I want to go around dumping the clutch as hard as I can just to be amazed by how much soother it is now.

however, what I have noticed is that the given size of the tank is 15.9 gallons. but I don't think the fuel gauge reads in a linear fashion. For if I got to 1/2 tank at 200 miles, I would get to E at 400 miles.
Instead the light comes on when it hits E with 3 gallons still left in the tank. I have filled it as soon as the light comes on many times and found it only needed less than 13 gallons to fill back up.
Once I actually needed to keep driving some 50 miles after the light came on, and I was quite sure I still had at least a gallon left.
So it's like there are 4 gallons for each of the First two quarters of the tank(by the fuel gauge), and about 2 1/2 gallons for each of the last two quarters of the fuel gauge.

I just got my first mileage back since I filled her up today. Got 336 miles to 13.8 gallons giving me 24.5 MPG.

This was probably 85% highway 15% city, however that doesn't mean the pedal wasn't to the floor on just about every on-ramp and here and there on the highway itself... lol.

If it was all highway and I WASN'T blasting up ramps I could see getting close to 30MPG.

So just to update here for those that were interested in how a swap does:

70% City (and heavy foot) I got 19mpg.

95% Highway (and light foot) I got 28.2mpg. (However this 95% highway was on I-80 doing a steady 80MPH. I would anticipate around 32-33 if it was a 55 road and you were doing 55).

Aerodymics matter with a vert. Also an automatic isn't a efficient as a manual. City driving is having a stop sign on every other corner, if not every corner. No remedy for that.
