Ok, ill be the one to say it...
You have NO idea what could be wrong with that car. For all you know it could have electrical gremlins, blown rings, bhg, rod knock, ect. Im not saying it WILL have those problems but it MIGHT. Heres the big questions: How much did you pay for it? Did you have a mechanic look it over? What noticable problems does it have? Where did you find it? Did the seller really want it sold? Goodluck with it. Could be a great project car, or the worst investment evar. Have fun ![]() |

this might get out of hand soon, before it does, leave him be. Just like me, i bought a 1gc, and believe me it does have gremlins. and i bought another one with its own gremlins to fix them...

Have fun ![]() I think he might have traded with his brother, not sure though. Well, I traded my car (straight trade) for a 94 mitsubishi 3000gt. It's a 5 speed non turbo, FWD, and it's fast. I will miss the Celica, but at least it's my brother's now.

Eric definitely traded his brother for this car. He wouldn't have given his Celica up unless he was familiar with the 3000GT. I personally think he got a good trade on it, and his Celica is still nearby any time he wants to drive it.

I love the body styling of those cars, just plain sexy. By the sounds of it, it's definitely a good project. It's always nice to start off something like that bro.
But a couple things struck me about those N/A. I drove a couple different ones a few years back and they're not that much faster than our celicas and are pigs lol. GL and update us on this project! ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

Everybody is just straight up hating this car- why? It's been just as reliable as the celica, a lot of you are exaggerating a lot. As far as parts just "needing to be replaced one after another" that is not the case with this car. Sure, it has it's issues, but what doesn't. You can't buy a used car that's a 94 and expect it to be perfect. And I find this car is way faster than the celica. I've driven this right after I've hopped out of the driver seat of the celi. Way more powerful. And one of the biggest reasons I love this car? Daniel knows what I'm talking about. AFTERMARKET SUPPORT. Something some of you Celica owners don't even know the meaning of.

Comparing the speed of two slow cars is pointless. Just because it's faster than a slow car doesn't mean its fast, in fact it's not even the same platform...that's like comparing a celica and an N/A supra. All I was saying is that I personally would not build a 3000gt when there is a VR4 model existent. I mean, I just don't see a point, even if you TT swap it, its still FWD...That means all the money you put in it trying to get it as good as a VR4 is stock won't even achieve that goal. I guess its a similar reason I wouldn't get an Impreza when I could get a WRX or STI, same reason I wouldn't build a Lancer when there's an Evo, same reason I wouldn't build a Neon when theres an Srt4, etc. Because if you get a car to build, you might as well not start with the base model. Besides I know the aftermarket support isn't outrageous but GT4's have what we need, what are we missing out on? Altezza tail lights? Super ultra JDM Spoilers? Ski racks? Metal floorboards?
Like you said, I like the styling of the car. And although I have my negative comments about DSM's due to personal experience, I won't be the guy to shy you away from having to repair a few things and take on a project as I love doing that myself. And I'm not hating on the car's potential, I'm just saying I wouldn't call that a fast car by any means and instead of trying to build that up, I would just save, sell that and buy a VR4 if I loved it enough. -------------------- 2006 BMW 330i - 6 Speed - Dinan Stage 1

Okay, but the point is you just made is invalid. "Why build a N/A into something if there's a vr4 existent". I would ask everybody on the forum the same question. Why build your celica if there's a gt4 that exists? vr4s are rare and expensive when you do find them. Plus the N/A is a better platform IMO. 10.1:1 CR= low turbo lag when twin turbo is put on. The vr4 has a slight turbo lag, and if I TT'ed mine with the SAME SETUP, I would beat it. I don't have all the extra added weight of stupid ECS, Active Exhaust, Active Aero, etc. I have the SL model, which consists of what I need for speed. And furthermore, what makes you think an AWD swap is impossible? It's extremely easy(and cheaper), if not more so on this car vs a celica. For one, the rear subframe mounts are ALREADY THERE. It's quite literally a bolt on conversion that can be done in a day if time is properly set aside and you are a diligent worker. And as far as aftermarket support? Cmon dude, this isn't a honda. I'm talking real performance parts like lightweight crank pulleys, plenty of lightweight flywheel/clutch combo's, fuel upgrades, from injectors to fuel rail, to fuel lines to an aftermarket FUEL FILTER. I mean seriously, this is ridiculous. Why can't someone just say something nice without some kind of crappy negative comment on something they read about on an online forum from one guy. This car isn't slow, it doesn't weight a lot, and it's styled very nicely. I thought I made my point earlier...

Okay, but the point is you just made is invalid. "Why build a N/A into something if there's a vr4 existent". I would ask everybody on the forum the same question. Why build your celica if there's a gt4 that exists? VR4's are in America, GT4's are not, simply put. VR4s are incredibly fun to drive and the reason I say why build the SL when there are VR4's is how often do you see a twin turbo FWD car? Very rarely, there is also a reason for that...I'm basically getting at a stock VR4 will outperform a twin turbo SL. I'm aware you can do conversions to make it AWD but its still not a VR4, and you probably will spend more making it a clone then a VR4 would be. I just saw a '99 VR4 with 100,000 give or take original miles going for 14k, that's a steal. EDIT: You ever seen the movie Thunderbolt with Jackie Chan? Badass movie with lots of driving. Jackie drives a VR4 in it, couple 5th gen GT4's too. That's the first place I saw a VR4 in action, then I drove one and they really are amazing. Are you going to turbo it yourself, or do a swap? I had a friend who did his own turbo build on his 3000gt SL, he sourced everything himself, custom fabbed everything, all the piping, exhaust, etc. I think he photo-documented everything, it was a few years ago but I can see if he still has it all saved or if it's on one of the 3000gt forums somewhere.

I know vr4's are sold in the US, but they are fairly rare. and i don't think i'd spend more on this making a vr4 replica vs buying a vr4. TT swap- 3000, AWD- 1000$. plus originally we bought this car for 800$. It would totally outperform a vr4 because of the 10.1:1 CR! Vr4's have an 8.5:1 CR. Same boost on both, which wins. And i'll turbo it myself.

Besides I know the aftermarket support isn't outrageous but GT4's have what we need, what are we missing out on? Altezza tail lights? Super ultra JDM Spoilers? Ski racks? Metal floorboards? For the most part I would agree with this about just buying the best stock trim and then going from there. I think in the case of older cars, as has already been stated they can be kind of rare. Let's take for example a 2003 Mustang GT, not the best car but the first that came into my head. Plenty of people build them up instead of just going out and buying a 2003 SVT Cobra, which is supercharged stock. I think the reason people build N/A cars is because they are easier to find and honestly, a hell of a lot cheaper to insure than the top trims of cars. A SVT for me would have been about $400 a month on insurance alone whereas a stock GT would have only run me about $100. Not saying what you stated is wrong, just saying why I think people build N/As instead. Everybody is just straight up hating this car- why? It's been just as reliable as the celica, a lot of you are exaggerating a lot. Let's see 5 bad wheel bearings, 2 broken axles, a messed up throttle cable, and my tire just coming off my car while I was making a turn at 10 mph.... all this and I haven't even owned the car for 2 years. I honestly had less problems with my 21 year old CRX that had 250k miles. All old cars have some problem at one point or another. Nothing lasts forever. To the OP, I like 3kgt's as well. I was considering getting one myself at one point. Good luck with the build and what not. Hope all goes well with the car. |

10:1 vs 8.5:1 both turbo on 8psi and pump gas the 10:1 would make more power true but all the 8.5:1 gotta do is up the boost/psi and it would make more power then the 10:1 on pump gas while the 10:1 is capped at 8psi to prevent it from blowing into pieces on pump gas. Vr4's aren't rare...MKIV Supras and Vipers are rare I see a lot of vr4's here for sale and around town all the time I've been around 3k guys long enough to know their weakness and the six figures you have to make to keep them running a joke from a previous 3k owner I know lol a lot of people like them just for their exotic look I drove a Vr4 and SL before didn't like it much drove like a tank and handled like one too it does weight almost 2 tons (Vr4) the SL same just less power not fast either prob as fast as our GT's if you want a FWD that handles good, peppy, good mpg, reliable and easy to mod get a RSX Type S prob the best stock FWD car I ever drove makes me want to trade in my 6gc for one but here too many people drive that car takes the fun out of it I hate looking like a sheep. ![]() -------------------- "To Protect And To Serve The Wealthy" -POLICE

okay, presure2, just close this thread. I didn't post this because I wanted to hear everybody's negative opinions. I'm really sick and tired of this.

it's your car. be happy with it. the people who dont like it, should just ignore this thread. they're not driving it. it's not something they have to get inside of everyday. its YOURS. don't let it get to you.
i LOVELOVELOVELOVE my celica. it's my first car, and no matter how many times i see nice ass s2ks, supras, gt4s, ek's, ae86's, fd's and etc. i always turn to my celica and tell myself, "damn. i LOVEEE this car!" and when i get compliments on it, it makes me love it even more! it is special to ME. its something I get in EVERYDAY. that why i build it even though it's an N/A to make it enjoyable for ME. not for ANYONE else. enough said.
