Been driving it in the snow now and I notice every time I get home there's only snow build up behind the drivers side tire, NEVER behind the pass side. So today it was raining and I did a couple little burnouts from stop signs and it's ALWAYS the driver side spinning. I took a tight right turn and made it spin [which should ALWAYS engage the pass side] yet the drivers side was the one spinning. It is NEVER getting power. I'm not hearing any clicking like a bad axle would. What could be the culprit and what should I check out? |

The snow backup is most likely just a fender well plastic that got unhindged. The burning out is most likely a crappy tire or a suspension thing.
Also our cars stock are NOT lsd therefor when you burnout only one tire would spin. This post has been edited by SupraKid: Jan 18, 2011 - 9:50 PM |

Did you guys not read what I said?
It only engages the driver side in ALL situations. An open differential will spin whichever tire has the least traction, and that varies between driver/pass side according to road conditions, left or right turns etc. Even in the snow in the driveway, turning sharp right and flooring it [should engage pass side and it should spin, but the DS spins]. This is not right, the passenger side should spin, but it will not. It's the shorter axle with less resistance, it spins first. "smartass" ? that's just not right ![]() don't be upset, it's the way a Celica s54 tranny works, maybe you should know that before you insult this site and the people on it first. -------------------- |

I didn't insult the site, this seems to be the spot for 6GCs and most of you have killer rides. I learn things by asking lots of questions. For some reason people get pissed off about this, but the explanations provided help me learn a lot of things I otherwise wouldn't know. So does this driver side always getting the most power affect the handling of the Celi's negatively? |

Trust me I've tried the search function. The one on this site doesn't work very well. Yes. It does. You just aren't typing in the initial search specifically enough. Treat it more like tags instead of single words. Looking for someone's 3SGTE swap? Type in like 6 or 7 words associated with that instead of just "3SGTE swap". -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

You make a right turn, the left tire will rotate more due to it having a further distance to travel and the right side less do to the shorter travel distance. either wheel will spin when the other has exceeded the threshold of traction available, it all depends on the conditions, such as how heavy the vehicle is, how much drag, how much friction there is, gradient of the road, the vehicle's momentum , weather and what ever else. your diff seems to be working fine /thread This post has been edited by SeverX13: Jan 20, 2011 - 1:13 AM -------------------- ![]() QUOTE ‹Superaison› i'm a computer inclined guy.. ‹Superaison› or girl. idk what gender I am anymore. ‹SeverX13› *facepalm* QUOTE suprakid: o sh!t suprakid: i wanna get an obama chia pet SeverX13: hahahahaha |

OP, I'm interested in hearing what your suspension setup is as well, this is a curious mystery. Maybe the snow is throwing another element of less traction in, but then again you could say that lack of traction is lack of traction...who knows. To answer the legit questions, the car is completely stock suspension, stock GT wheels with 205/55/15 BFGs, tires are basically brand new. I'm just trying to figure out if something is wrong or not. With all my of previous vehicles with open diffs, the tire with the least traction will always spin, no matter whether it's DS or PS. It just does not make sense to me that only one side gets power all the time. |

It was my passenger side tire was the one with all the power in my old Celica, except when traction was an issue or when I turned. My open diff acted exactly as you are saying it should. My passenger side tire would always go bald quicker than my driver's side because it pulled more often than the driver's side. The power always took the path of least resistance. I don't necessarily think that it's something wrong with your car if all the power is going to the driver's side wheel, but your passenger side wheel should pull from time to time.

what could have happened: your diff locked up and broke the pinion gears, and lodging into the DS, causing the PS to spin freely.
way to check: leave car in park(auto) or in 1st(manual) jack the passenger side ONLY off the ground and try to spin it. it shouldn't spin. now jack both front tires off the ground, spin either one, and the opposite tire should spin in the opposite direction. -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. -------------------- God made man....

Just jack the front of the car up (use jack stands). Put the car in drive.... one wheel will spin. Get some gloves and slow the rotation down, see if the other wheel starts to spin.
If it does you dont have a problem. If you stop that wheel and the other wheel isn't spinng somethings wrong, but i'm willing to bet its fine. -------------------- -93 Rx7, Turbo 6.1L v8, 725rwhp/760rwtq

he doesn't care about the car and that's ok.
Not everyone cares about their Celica like most of the people on this site. His car most likely is a piece of crap and is embarrassing, let him junk it, who really cares. I'm happy he's getting something that will make him happy and there will be one less knucklehead here. -------------------- |
