So I'm not having any issues, yet (knock on wood) with my 95' celi gt but... yesterday I drove like 750 miles from Indiana to Connecticut in it. After letting it sit overnight, the engine sounds like a prop plane, much deeper than it ever had. It sounds like a tank when I accelerate! I changed the oil before I left, even put new front brakes in. I checked the fluids and the only one that looks a bit low is the engine coolant.
I'm concerned it wont make it for the return trip so I want to be sure that I can do anything I need to until I make that trip next week. Any suggestions? -------------------- |

Sure it aint just an exhaust issue? Usually having deeper sounding engine is exhaust issue related. Did it burn any oil? Coolant clean still? Gauges all read fine? Probably isn't a prob with the engine.

Check your oil level.

In my opinion it could be your clutch or simply a bearing....or transfer box? differential? Surely a mechanical issue. No rattling??

sounds like you have a break in the exhaust before the muffler. start the car, put your hand over the exhaust outlet to plug it, does it build pressure? I bet it doesn't at all and the rumble changes tone slightly.

I drove it today and it still didn't sound good. My friend whom I am staying with said he heard me pull up even though he was in the shower simply from the sound of the exhaust. Also, I went over a bump and it sounded like something hit on the ground! I'm going to check the exhaust pipes when I get back out there. The car just feels like it rides a little rougher too.
oh and the oil level was still topped off. This post has been edited by Terzin1: Oct 7, 2011 - 7:54 AM -------------------- |

x3
I've got a similar "booming" sound with certain acceleration, coming from around my firewall. I'm betting exhaust leak at the flex pipe for myself as well. A clunking sound would confirm that theory, seeing as pipe should be bangin' around down there. I guess the noice must be bad but best thing you can do it try to make it hold with high temp muffler tape and fix it when you get home.

I remember when that happened to mine! lmao came off the dirt after a little off roading and hit a little bump and heard this big wooohhh wooohh type sound. looked under my car after I got to the store with my buddy and mine broke at that same exact spot. I loved the sound of it, especially the small little popping sounds when you let off the gas! still does it a little bit with my new exhaust on since I have no cats now and only have one resonator.
Since it's a 1995, you can just have an exhaust place put new flanges on it and throw a pipe in place of the cat (would be the cheapest solution). This post has been edited by mkernz22: Oct 7, 2011 - 5:28 PM |

That sucks. I thought it was an exhaust issue. You don't 'have' to get that fixed man. I would simply find/buy something to tie both pieces up to get them off the road and to get them to stay put - not to connect them. Drive it home dude and when you get home, fix it there.

I couldn't find any tape to try and hold the pieces together for the trip back so I just said to hell with it and just now returned to Indiana without fixing anything. For a while when I would go over bumps or potholes I would hear the pipes clang against the road. I hit a particularly large pot hole and hear a giant bang and then nothing more. I'm now missing a section of piping which undoubtably flew off somewhere on i80 in PA!

Time for a custom exhaust! A lot of exhaust shops will install a perf. exhaust cheap at least cat back for around $200 installed. Check into it.
