I'm having some trouble with the auto transmission in my '97 Celica GT, which by the way has been a great car for the three years I've owned it. The car has about 155,000 miles on it and runs great. However in cold weather the transmission won't shift into the highest gear (OD) until after the car has warmed up for a while. I've not had this problem in warm weather. I can get in, start the car, and pretty much just go. I'll get on the highway, and once I get up to about 40 or so (I haven't paid enough attention to the exact speed) it shifts into high gear. In cold weather no such luck. I have to start it, and knowing about the shifting problem, I let it run for 5 or so minutes in the driveway before I go on. If I were to just start it and go, it won't shift into high gear once I get on the highway. Has to warm up first.
Any thoughts?? Thanks, Brad O'Brien Fort Worth, TX 1997 Celica GT |

As an auto owner myself (sad, I know) I have the same issue. I've always assumed that its just that the trans has to be warm to operate properly... I would be interested to know if its a problem or not....even though I have not noticed any other issues with the trans. BTW, where in Ft. Worth are you located?

like smaay said, change fluid and filter, check for trouble codes of the solenoids. I did a write up on that, check the stickys. when I had my auto celi and camry both 5s it both fixed the problem, it was the solenoid but make sure it is first.

To prevent damaging the transmission internals, O/D will not activate until the transmission is up to appropriate levels of temperature and RPMs. It's specified in the owner's manual.

Correct, that is normal operation. If the thermostat hasn't been replaced, replace the thermostat to get the engine up to operating temp faster. That made a HUGE difference for me.

yes this is a similar situation that most OEM systems which use any kind if oil/hidrolic fluid for its function, just like the lift on the VVT-L on the 2zz, does not allow to engage until it reaches operating temp.
