Hello Everyone--
I would like to see how many of you would be interested to purchase Colt Cams.

This is a great mod, for some the first mod, with great results. It is the biggest bang for the buck. This cam profile is mild enough where getting a piggy back to adjust air/fuel ratio, exhaust, etc. modifications are not necessary, although they do complement it.

My goal is to send our cams in by April 15th. This should give most of us time to think, save, and get a set of cams. I purchased a set of cams from another member, so that I can still drive my car. You can also pull out a set from a junk yard, or send in your originals. The higher the number of participants, the higher the leverage I will have to score a deal. I don't know how much cheaper yet, but I will do my best.

Info:
5SFE .256 duration .330 lift - $350
5SFE .260 duration .345 lift - $400

3SGTE .260 duration .345 lift - $350

3SGE .260 duration .345 lift - $350

1mz quad cam V6 - intake .262 duration .347 lift
exhaust .264 duration .330 lift - $500

We need 6 sets or more (combination of 5sfe, 3sgte, 3sge is okay to get 6 sets) to get the deal excluding 1mz. Need 3 sets or more for the 1mz. Prices include shims and the return shipment. Payment is by money order or check. Turnaround is 2 weeks.

Please post if you are interested and let's get a head count.

Head count:

1. JasonX - 94 5sfe
2. Syaoran - 93 5sfe
3. 95CelicaST - Need vehicle info
4. Arsaces - 95 5sfe

Didn't manny have some dyno charts up somewhere of a colt cam install, a before and after on someone's 5s? I believe there was also a comparison to the Webcams and I think the consensus was that the colt cams provided a more smooth power band and more overall power didn't they?

I just can't find the thread ATM

I thought webcams gave a smoother curve compared to colt cams, but both added power..
I might be wrong, gonna search for the thread..

To the OP, I'd be interested if I had a spare set of cams kindasad.gif
Bump.

I would definitely be interested in something like this if I can score some cams from a junkyard nearby. Quick question though, how involved is it for someone with NO internal engine experience to do an install like this? Also, setting up a SAFC, how difficult is it to get your settings correct?

I went in with no internal experience. Took some trial and error but i got it done, and now I now my way around the top end.
Tuning the SAFC would require a wideband A/F gauge.
once you plug in some of the required settings you can then mess with the High and Low throttle curves to adjust the A/F ratio and get it running right.

went off on a little rant there, but just letting you know what you are getting into

You guys rekon it would be possible for Australian members to do this? We will just have a much higher shipping charge?

how could they possibly know what shims you need? every one will be different.

I would be extremely interested in this if i wasn't installing a 1MZ in my car. NOW if they want to venture in the 1MZ cams, im sure a ton of customers would be interested

they dont send new shims, they send the helper shims.
and dont go on a rant, you did it last time when zac got his and i proved you wrong then too.
the helper shims are fine, and work perfectly.
i was able to just drop the new cams in with the helper shims, and all but one was within spec. ( i could have left that one too, it was only .02 out.)
the colt cams are a great bang for the buck mod compared to most of the other mods on these cars (other than FI of course)

they do tons of diffrent cams, im sure geoff would be interested in the 1mz cams, if he hasnt already.

I have a set of 5sfe cams rolling around in my garage somewhere, but they might be usable if they are being re-ground.

Yes, as you guys already figured out, colt cams are smoother. They are also cheaper than webcams and include shims, as well as the return shipment. I'll hit him up and ask him if we can include 1MZ and the 3SGTE cams in this deal.

How will the car run with just the cams and no SAFC (From OP it looks like it will run fine)?
Can a SAFC be tuned with data from a dyno (will this be cheaper than buying a wideband gauge?)?
I don't see much information on actually "tuning" our cars with the SAFC, so I can only assume that there is some simple concept that is followed when tuning + a bit of trial and error. I probably sound very ignorant here, but my Celica is my DD and I can't risk blowing the engine by walking into something like this blind.

heres a pic of the helper shim installed with the stock shim in a bucket, the shims are in the background of the pic.

more info on the install can be found here:

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...mp;hl=COLT+CAMS

i would find out which set that zac got, and see if they can do somthing a bit more agressive than those. while it did improve the powerband overall, and felt good, i feel like somthing a bit more agressive would be even better.

thanks for the pic, thats exactly what i wanted to know. now here comes my rant!!!!

ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS! you are going to put that little "helper" shim under the OEM shim with a cam love rolling over it at high speed? dont you guys ever venture on Supraforums? yes i know this isnt a Supra with a 272 cam in it, but on Supras this would be a HUGE no no! it would spit those shims right out. now i can tell you this that the buckets, and shims are the same part numbers between our cars and i think this is a huge time bomb.

Ok so its working fine now on someone elses car, that doesnt meant its ok to do.

i have been in the toyota engine world a long time now and i do have lots to back my word up. Personally i think this is VERY bad and i would not do it. with any cam upgrade i would upgrade to 1ZZ buckets. it would cost about the same to get the right OEM shim.

look at the good picture above. the shim sits in a lip in the bucket. now if you put that helper shim under the OEM shim it will not be sitting as deep in that lip. you are just asking for it to be spit out by the cam. If you value my advise, i highly suggest doing it right and just getting 1ZZ buckets. is the 150 dollar insurance worth your engine?

The update is that I need more interest, lol. What I am trying to organize is not the typical "group buy" where we send one type of cams only. I am trying to generate enough business by sending him plenty orders of various types of cams to get a discount. I think cams is a great upgrade and I would like everyone in our community to be able to benefit from it.

I had a chance to speak with Zac, but he does not have a record of what cam profile he got. He did mention that Geoff would probably know.

256 on Zac's. I wonder if the next up profile would require additional modifications? Still considered somewhat mild, but gotta check.

93 GT 5S-FE

I believe the 260 cams are the ones I want for turbo, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. Why is there a set of cams for the 1mz and there are two cam profiles for the 5s-fe? Do we have to buy two cams (400 and 350) separately for intake/exhaust, or does each cam profile include intake and exhaust cams?

The 260 cams would be the one for the turbo. I put two different profiles for the 5SFE. 256 is the milder ones. So, you don't pay both.
