Say I wanna find the top speed in my ST. It's an automatic, so I don't have as many options for some things.. but after I'm in the highest 'gear', how high should I let the RPM's get before I slow down? Should I let it get so close as to redline, or 6000? Or something lower?

If you actually get to that point without getting pulled over, your car won't go to 6000 rpm's in OD, which is your final gear in your automatic st. You could just forget the guesswork and experimentation and search for other threads that deal with stating the top speed of your car. Should be around 110-125, depending on year.

my car hits the speed limiter at 115mph while only at about 4200rpm
but i rarely go faster than 80, even if im racing someone, i try to always shut down at 80 for two reasons 1.less of a ticket if i get caught and its easier to slow down. 2.screwing up at 80 is bad enough, but at 115 it will be a whole hell of a lot worse mechanically, my car could probably go to 130, maybe 135(auto st) power wise it will get there no problem, im at the limiter and back down to a sane speed in less than a minute. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

I've had mine up to a little over 125 on the 4-lane just outside of town. I couldve gone higher but i got scared and decided to slow it down. Not worth the risk of a ticket or death so... i keep it under 90 these days.

Thats Anderson for ya. Also, ST's have governor at 115, if you got to 125 in your ST, i'd be amazed, cuz the GT tops out at around 125 so your ST would be hard pressed to get there. -------------------- |

The GT doesn't quit at 125, the limiter comes in. BTW, you should get your ECU taken in, the limiter is off now. I did 130 yesterday, I think I could've gone a teeny bit higher...135 maybe?

Lol, it was kinda a crack at F+F. I own both movies but yet I despise them. In the very very first scene of the movie, he shifts enough to be in 7th gear in a 5 speed Eclipse. His car also goes from like 140 to 160 in .3 seconds hence the 171 mph. ![]() NOOOSSSSS (I love it - I'm going to buy an older Camry and put NOS on it and just shoot it at like 120 shot all the time) -------------------- i am awesome

My ST doesnt have the limiter. Unless my speedometer is off, which i dont think it is, then i was doin 125. I know whatcha mean about F+F Andason...not very realistic, but i still liked both of em.

I've been to 138 in my ST. But that's going by the speedometer that says I'm doing 100 when I pass speed signs that say I'm going 96. I'd guess I 'actually' hit about 130. But then again I have a manual, and still had about 300 rpms untill redline. The auto might top out a little differently. Also, this was when my Celi still had less than 100k on it, it now has 196k. Almost time for a swap(don't want to get rid of an engine that still has life in it).

with my old turbo, it lagged badly and for the first half of 1st gear it was slower than stock but now, turbo spools in what seems like no time at all and after the shift into 2nd it torque steers to the left. when i make a test pipe it should be even better!! -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

I looked up the stats for an NA celi:
Toyota 1.8 ST 114BHP Top Speed of 124 0-60 in 10 Toyota 2.0 GT 173BHP Top Speed of 139 0-60 in 7.9 Not to say that these couldnt be surpassed going downhill or w/ small performance mods, but unless you have turbo i doubt youre gonna be goin much faster than this. |

If you want I can do it again and have it taped(may have more trouble now because of the extra 100k on the engine). And as for where, it was on I-70 between St Louis and Kansas City. |

back in the old days with my GT i did 123mph. i tried not to long ago and did 143mph with a pasenger and a few hundred rpm left. the car was still accelarting but i didnt have the guts. |

I really believe that an ST doesn't have enough engine to push those 2,500+ pounds all the way up to 120 mph...it may get there but it's after minutes. My ST climbed to 80 in a heartbeat and from there took an eternity to get to 90 and to 100 it was painfully slow...took probably more than a minute. After turbocharging it, at only 3 PSI with a blown turbo the car rocketed to 120 so fast I got nervous, haha...and it also torque steered to the left.

Don't know where you're getting the 2500 pound figure. It's more like 2300. But either way, even my old 85 GTS could get up over 100 like it was nothing(22RE put out the same 115 hp as the 7AFE, with a tad more torque, and to the rear wheels). Sure it's forever compared to something like an RX-7 or Supra, but it will get there.
We've had this discussion on this board as well as on Celica.net many times. The ST gears(manual trans) top out at 138. So believe what you want, but I've been there and know better. |

Last time I checked on the web, I think it was a car reviews website, the ST weighed 6,4xx pounds...maybe some more for the automatic. I've never weighed it but from my understanding, my car is now heavier with the turbo stuff...not by much, but heavier. Also, I have 17" wheels...they're less than 18 pounds each but obviously we gotta count the tire weight...hmm..are the stock plain black wheels heavier or lighter thank the Enkeis? That's where I got the 2,500+...just a raw guesstimate. Hell, if I'm lighter than 2,500 that's awesome...more power to weight ratio than a Spec V or a Lancer Ralliart...both heavier than 2,600 pounds STOCK ![]() -------------------- |

Can we bypass the limiter also? I thought you could only mess with the manual tranny STs. I need to know how because I'll need to do a max speed run so I can street set the S-AFC before going to the dyno ![]() -------------------- |

3rd gear 100mph ![]() 4th gear 120mph ![]() 5th gear 145mph ![]() It's got 85k (ish) on the clock and runs like a dream. My '95 ST tops out at 130mph (210km/h); but it really isnt comfy driving at that speed, engine is at 6300rpms then.
(tested it in Germany, no limits on highways there) as for performance mod, the only thing changed is the cat has been taken out. |

For all the weight related info, just look in the door. You will find curb weight, original tire size, transmission code, paint code... According to Henry's site(henryvo.com), the ST Liftback weighs 2415(man)/2495(auto). The ST Coupe is the lightest at 2395(man).

My 97 GT automatic topped out at 127 with the top up- the limiter did not kick in. It was holding at 127 for different reasons (aero? raw hp?). With the top down it stops at around 115 mph, obviously for aerodynamic reasons. Going downhill on the 73 toll way south to San Diego, I've managed to get 125 with the top down- but these were some steep ass hills man, I found my speed dropping from 125 to 95 on the way back up. Have to try it with the top up- see if weight helps me fall

Not sure what kinda engine you have, but My 95 Celica with the 5 spd 7aFe engine I hit 125 on the Interstate before slamming the brakes cause some dumb*^%$ trucker decided to cut me off, so I can tell you that all you need to do is get a long stretch of road a friend to ride behind you at normal speed and someone to scout ahead of you and go. Try shifting the auto yourself at about 5750 so that the car has time to shift while your still on the throttle so it cant hit the revlimiter.
Also check your tires and brakes if you screw up I promise you it will HURT... L8R 95belica |
