it has to do with the A/C

It's basicly a fuel saver mode for your a/c. It doesnt run your a/c constantly, but runs it every so often.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the ECON mode doesn't dehumidify air, it simply shoots cold air in. Never knew if I was right though.

I'm pretty sure it's there for those cars that don't have the option of turning off AC when the defrost is on. It's to disable the AC compressor in order to enhance fuel mileage.

is it somehow possible that the a/c pump runs at 2 speeds? because it seems to load the engine half as much as the AC button does, its really irritating off-boost it saps all the power and delays the turbo spool

it's the open vent I believe.... instead of recirc...

There are NOT two speeds for the A/C compressor. It's an electromagnet that turns on (electric cluctch) and is either ON or OFF. For cars with manual control you have the a/c button with which you can turn the coompressor on and off manually. With the auto climate control, you lose some features... let me explain.

With the manual control you also have the recirculate button (aka max ac) , or the button with the arrow that passes straight through (aka open vent)

These two functions, recirc and open vent, are just where the exchanger gets it's air from. If the exchanger gets its air from the outside at say 36C or 97F it has to do a lot of work to cool it off to say 20C for the inside of the car (causes the compressor to work harder.... more inefficient). with the recirculate on, it draws it's air form the inside of the car that has already been cooled, to say 30C, or 26 C so it doesn't have as large of a temperature difference to make up.
So you can choose to have the A/C on with either the air being drawn from the inside of the car, or the outside of the car....

When you have the auto climate control, the controls objective is to obtain the temperature you've set. In this case, I BELIEVE the ECON button is the "open the vent, but turn the compressor off" button. with the A/C on, it's the "a/c is on with the recirc also on" (because that is the most efficient and really the only way the A/C should ever be on from an efficiency stand point)

So in conclusion, A/c is compressor on with recirculate also on
ECON is the compressor off with the vent open to the outside to let the outside air cool the inside of the car off.

i just answered why i drive instead of walk. im talking about the econ mode, its useless. seems to suck in hot air if anything, why an econ mode if u can just roll the window down

exactly -
It's just hot air being drawn in from around the car.....

unless of course it's fall or spring and the temperature outside is about 65F, making it pleasent to have the vent open in the event of rain.....

that doesnt seem to be the case as the recirc/vent functions work independently of the ac/econ functions, and econ still loads up the engine, just not as much as the ac button, so surely it must use the compressor atleast some of the time

I suppose I will have to verify that for myself when I get the RHD beams done. It will have the climate control like your guys's. I was just going off of how the ECON button worked in our Nissan. And that's how it operated.

Not usdm's. My St204 Gt-S doesn't have this function contrary to my JDM Gt-Four. It's a JDM/RHD + Euro feature only IIRC.

I think you're wrong only because it has resirc/open vent as well.
My beliefe is like most cars here in the states already do, the compressor actually runs in an on/off sequence to allow for better fuel economy, this is just an option in other countries.
Only a theory. BTW this if for sale wink.gif

I stand corrected lol- I agree with you haha. I even have this control module that is going back into my car when RHD is done and I didn't see the recirc button. OOPS!!

the A/C compressor switches on and off on both A/C & ECON mode. it's called ECON because it cuts the A/C out at a slightly warmer evaporator temperature so the compressor switches off more often than it would in A/C mode resulting in warmer air coming out from the vents. and having it set to ECON & RECIRC will improve fuel economy.
this information is coming from someone who posted on gt4oc claiming to be a toyota a/c tech.
