I'm gonna try and clean my EGR valve in the next couple days and try and clear the code in the computer and had a couple questions for you guys.
First has anyone here had a problem with code 71... - EGR VALVE MALFUNCTION - EXHAUST GAS TEMPEATURE BELOW SPEC. FOR EGR CONTROL - EGR SYSTEM - EGR GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR/CIRCUIT I've got the pdf manual from an other post and am gonna try what it suggests but was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so what it was. I think it's probably carbon build up in the egr or a faulty sensor hopefully. I really don't want to spend $300 on a stupid valve. Also to clear the code do you just pull the jumper wire while the codes are flashing. That's how it's done on my TBird but that's a Ford. Thanks in advance. -------------------- ![]() Project ST204.5 99.88946% complete... |

Not sure how you clear the codes on a 97. Probably just a jumper somewhere in the diagnostic port. Somebody with a newer shop manual should be able to tell you.
Its probably just a bad sensor or everything is just really clogged up. Its really common for those things to be a mess when you take them apart. |

I'm having the same exact problem w/ mine. I tried taking everything apart and cleaning it. It did no good. I have to buy a whole new EGR valve. I've been looking for someone parting out a 7AFE but have had no luck so far. Let me know if you figure out how to fix it without replacing the EGR valve.

figured out how to clear the codes... just pull out the EFI fuse for about 30 seconds (longer if it's cold outside). I looked at the manual I downloaded and it had a troubleshooting section for all of the possible codes and detailed instructions for all of the possible causes of the error code so it's helpin' out a lot. gonna go pull codes again to make sure that was the right one then I'm gonna clear them and see if it comes back.

I've reset the code a few times (when I disconnected the battery) and it comes back in about 15-40 minutes.
