Alright folks...I got a wild hair, and need to address it.

I want to plastidip the whole red GT.

There are a few reasons for such.

1. The current paint is horrible and ugly as sin with clear chipping off everywhere.
2. I will be swapping over black doors..and obviouslly I'd like the colors to match atleast some!
3. After seeing a couple done online, it doesn't look half bad, and would look better than what I have now.
4. Easy removal for when the swap is done, and the whole car will be professionally painted then.
5. I have a bunch of exterior bits I want to put on, but cannot because of the current red paint situation, this will have them all one color until it comes time to paint correctly.

According to calculations I should be needing about 25 cans. The paint is "flat" black..I'd call it more of a semi-gloss. There should be approx 5-6 coats depending on which panel is being painted. Will be done in stages to avoid uneven layers.

Lets hear thoughts on why and why nots please.

Did I mention I hate red, and love black cars?

The goods out weigh the bads (if any at all..) in my opinion as well. Especially since you are planning on a respray regardless after your swap. Just make sure you do a clean job and just like you said, it will be way better to have a one color car with non chipping paint and all of your parts. thumbsup.gif

And no swirl makrs with plasti dip wink.gif

But don't they make a kit for painting the whole car? as opossed to using rattle cans to do the whole thing?

Hmm the panel has spoken! Well keep an eye out, I'll be tackling this shortly after the move.

A kit for the whole car...I must research this...may be cheaper than 25 cans at 6 bucks a pop.

Well rattlecanning an entire car is going to suck, especially doing 4-5 coats. Plan it out well( like start on this fender, end on this bumper sort of thing).

Make sure to use wax/oil remover, its next to the automotive paint at most places. I would also suggest chipping off all the peeling clearcoat and wet sanding the entire car with 400 grit before you spray it. If you carry out this paragraph worth of suggestions you may get excellent adhesion, but if you dont you will have peeling and fisheyes.

One last thought, you could go over the final coat with wetsanding to make it more or less glossy. Not a bad idea since you will be rattle canning it.

Sounds about right, thanks for the tips.

Not sure about the wetsanding though, it is a rubbery type of paint, and may tear under such stress if not layered thick enough.

I'm currently looking into the plastidip car kit...basically a paint sprayer and paint, mix and goto town.

I have a keen arm for rattle cans, alot of the parts on my old celica were rattle and many would never know. Time will tell on this project. My car is currently ugly as sin, so all this could do is move forward progressivly.

That's the one thing I don't like about my car, it's red. Kind of curious as to how this will turn out.

You don't need to sand the car, just use an automotive cleaner to get the oils and junk off. I used this on all 4 of my wheels with just wiping them with a rag and it came out fine. It's very hard to make this uneven, just make sure you have enough on so that when you peel it, it comes off nicely and not in patches.
It is more of a matte black than anything, doesn't reflect that much light so super-stealth in the dark haha laugh.gif

Oh yeah, and the cans work just fine. It might look weird when it's wet, but once it dries, it all settles down

Yea that is about the same process I had when I did my wheels laugh.gif

Now the super-stealth I'm all for...the cops here are already eye-balling me plenty in red.

Just didn't want to discredit Edy's post on a well thought out process for traditional paint.

Why not just use flat black spray paint?
The only diff would be the peeling off part

You have a good point.

Reasoning is less mess, "matte" black as its been described do not like the flat flat look, and if I literally hate it..I just peel it away.

Plus can for can, they cost about the same, and I believe plastidip is more sturdy compared to regular rattle can paint that will get hard and brittle thus cracking/webbing all over the place, because of the old paint under it I may or may not sand...most likely not...just going to sand the bad clear out.

It held up good but i hit the whole car lightly with 220 grit first
But i understand wanting to be able to remove it too if you dont like it

Yea I saw that earlier and havn't decided if I want to pay 200 dollars for a sprayer, and a gallon of paint....doesn't make much sense.

I can use a traditional sprayer with some thinner and possibly get the same result, been researching just havn't gotten to a conclusion yet.

Honestly, don't waste the money on a gun and paint, the cans will come out perfectly fine. It'll still look great and you won't need to spend as much when you will just be painting the car anyway. Why spend the extra money on something temporary when you can put it toward the actual paint job?

Wrap is expensive.. The cheapest I've seen it is online, if you do it yourself is about 500 plus.
I had a conversation with Yellowchinaman who said it wouldn't be ideal to wrap a WHOLE car yourself and wouldn't be worth it to pay a shop to do it either.

That is a perfectly good point Mkernz =P

Not a fan of wrap, they complete wrap vehicles where I work, and it always is horrible and starts to come off after a few months.

Don't think I'll be leaving it this way more then a year and half.

Wrap on the inside is ok. Real carbon fiber would be cool, hate to know how much it'd cost though in comparison to 3M wrap.

Found 2 spare cans I had left over, and got a wild hair. Since the front bumper was one of the worst areas, figured I'd tackle that first.

Some overspray protection

The result 3 coats later.

I'm iffy on the results, but either or, its better then the previous paint. I may have to acquire a sprayer for the remainder of the car....

Either that or use the knowledge I have, instead of ignore it, and not do it in direct sun light.

And when I'm finally done, I'll pull out the good camera to give you guys a good outlook on how its going to be.

Lol thanks. Yea that bra look is certainly there.

After finishing the bumper it is now bugging me, I want to do the rest now. Seeing that took 2 cans...I have a feeling I'll need 22 more, and I don't think Home Depot has that many in stock...we'll find out when funds arrive.

Not to thread jack, but wanted to add that I went out and bought a can of white plasti dip to test out, as in how it will hold up to Arizona dry-heat weather.

Ask and you shall receive!

As you can see, the rattle can spray effect is certainly there. It was semi expected, but not to this extreme. I think humidity played a large effect in the setting of the paint.

No biggie, going to spray some smaller items in the same temps, let it cure, and try multiple high grits of sandpaper to smooth it out, then a layer of clear to ease the cleaning.

Though it looks ghetto and cheap...I still like it better than the red.

For some reason as I look at the pictures, the projectors are giving me a pissed off look as in "wth were you thinking"

Yea I will be doing the same after doing the hood with the rattle cans, I'm not happy with the extra work and the way the spray laid.

Figured if it went south I'd do as you mentioned above, and just get the whole car done in one shot, right.

Could you share your mix ratio of thinner to paint please?

I believe it was 1 quart thinner to 1 gallon but it was provided in the kit from dipyourcar.com

When you buy a gallon they already provide the thinner. The prices are cheaper than locally but since they are in Florida the shipping really kills it for me. The main reason I bought from them initially was for the sprayer since it was unavailable anywhere else.

Yea looks great.

Going to be doing the same method soon, just grabbing my own wagner, and some thinner. No need for a "special" sprayer.

Most likly I'll take off the rattle canned dip, do a general sanding of the whole vehicle, and just spray away.

With the new residence I'm not stuck under trees, and working in a sand lot. So I have alot more room for a more professional looking spray. Plus the wagner is cheaper overall verses buying the cans seperatly, also less work for better results.

I'm thinking 2 weeks I'll tackle it.

Can't wait to see it. The sprayer is not really that "special" per say. Its the same sprayer as wagner double duty except the motor isn't attached to the gun rather its seperate via 20ft of hose. Makes it easier to control the gun without the weight of the sprayer.

Ah good to know, that is the sprayer I was looking at. Knowing that now answers the question of if it can handle the plastidip.

Making sure I can use Floetrol with plasidip to thin.

I'm not sure. You may want to contact Plastidip directly and ask them.

Heres another shot in better lighting.

I hate to blow my surprise, but I have every intention of Plasti-Dipping my entire car; YELLOW. Except for the hood and a few other tidbits. smile.gif

Excited to see how yours turns out.

And they do sell car kits straight from their website.

Decent pricing and great guys to work with. Of course because I'm in Canada I deal with the Canadian Vendor, Patrick.

I'll hook you up with a URL later. smile.gif

Lol, quite interested to see how that would turn out. Though yellow is my favorite color, I'm sure it would look good. I know my lady would love it =P Lol sorry had to say it, its here favorite color for her dream car being the older Jeep Wranglers. I'll definately check them out directly, just trying to avoid "overhead" on a special sprayer that is in turn, not special.

About right, this stuff drys amazinly fast, and like Zaluss said, 4-5 coats. You want to apply a large amount of coats so it can come easily in the future if planned.

I like the way it looks on the 5th, so I can imagine it looking good on the 6th.

I should be starting on mine next week, just waiting on fundage to settle after moving.

Here is what my plastidipped car looks like after a month or so has passed. Some good close up shots of the texture. I've seen quite a bit of rain and rocks driving 60mi everyday.

I've heard that before, but there is a clear additive that makes it slightly shinier as well more durable for washing purposes.

Long time lurker, first time poster and eager-to-get-started Plasti Dipper here.

Why such a big difference in price between these two companies?

http://murdermyride.com/

http://www.dipyourcar.com./

Also, what's with the murder my ride "specially mixed" vs. dip your car offering thinner alongside the plasti dip?

I'm so confused.

As far as I know, DipYourCar is actually partnered with PlastiDip. So prices and options are better with DYC.
I've never heard anything about murdermyride... I think "specially mixed" is B.S.

Go with dip your ride. I had my doubts but after lots of pricing they are the best option.

Still planning to do this soon, just got caught up on my swap.

Thanks man,
To be honest it looks a lot better in person. It's not perfect, as I have been over every inch of every body panel 1000's of times sanding so I know all the flaws. When I take a day off from working on it and see how much orange peel and how sloppy some of the factory paint looks on new cars; it looks so much better! I'm only about 70% done with the panels. But I will post all the pix and an hd walk around video as well as compare it to a newer factory black car.

Yep rolled on with a foam roller. It actually goes on quite smooth. But in order to get a good finish like this you have to wet sand it.

I plastidipped an entire miata gunmetal. I used their new wagner sprayer and 3 gallon kit.
Super easy to spray. 3 gallons is just enough to probably do 5 coats maybe 6 on a celica

Only took 4 hours total

How well does it hide imperfections? I'm also thinking of dipping my car but have a bunch of peeling clear coat and bubble rust (which I would obviously sand down first).

Don't want to get into it if that stuff will affect how well the dip applies

Well got my kit from dipyourcar.com

I'm going to be honest here I'm not to pleased with their service.

It took nearly 3 weeks to get 2 gallons & sprayer. They made no indication, or notification of such back order, while already charging my card. On top of that, the sprayer is not what they advertised. It is a cheaper brand.

I paid 240 for this kit.

The sprayer sells retail for 140...so I paid about 50 dollars a gallon, where they sell it on their site for less. I understand the need to make a profit, but I would prefer they sell what they advertise.

Be it would be a large frustration, and shipping costs to get it correct. I will simply bite this small bullet and move forward with the project..and remember their service.

So I used the kit today, and I would like to retract my previous negative comment.

There were more items in the sprayer box that made up for my previous gripe.

The kit worked well, and the sprayer was 5yr simple to use.

Paint looks great from what I can see. I barely taped things off, just sprayed a good 5 coats, and peeled away the excess.

Will post pics tomorrow when the sun is shining

Pretty excited to see the results!

Also I read on the plastidip forums the reason you didn't get the wagner sprayer was because of complaints their Authorized Installers had about the fronts of the wagner sprayers leaking..

So win / win.

And pics will make it triple WIN tongue.gif

Really easy to do.

I pulled the excess off last night. Sprayed right over the windows (taped center off on large rear & front), rear lights, and markers. Came off easy as could be.

I like it..but now my rim color needs to be updated. Almost to black!

That white run is from when I sanded the whole vehicle then washed it afterwards. I didn't clean the hood because it wasn't getting painted. Will need to wash the car to remove it, but want to let the new paint cure.

I painted it previously with rattle can plastidip and discovered it was not possible to get a clean spray for such a large surface area. That being why I ordered the spray kit for the rest of the vehicle.

The hood it self will be modified in the future to fit in the 3sgte TMIC so I wasn't eagerly jumping to peel and respray it. I actually don't think I would have enough paint to do the hood with the small kit.

Front bumper, will also be swapped for a 96+ so that also didn't get a new spray, just the same rattle can as the hood for now.

Comments from co-workers today - "why does you car look like a chalkboard now?" "Oh I thought that was just primer!" "Are you done?" frown.gif No appreciation in that dept.

The point of dipping is to not have to sand. Don't mean to sound condescending but don't tell me you sanded the whole car o.O

There were so many places where the clear was chipping off in large pieces, and showing bubbles under.

There was no option but to sand it down. I didn't take it to the metal, just a nice smooth surface.

Not to mention the tons of primer and bondo applications before myself that had to be somewhat fixed on the rear areas.

Only took me 2 hours to sand it =P

Oh well if that's the case I forgive you xD

You should dip over the sidemarkers on the fenders, and you definitely need bigger/wider wheels to pull off the "murdered out" look, but it came out pretty well for the first try.

How's the gun?

Yea the sidemarkers were dipped over but I peeled it away. They are getting shaved anyway when I get around to buying new fenders. This was mainly done to ease my mind because how it looked was frustrating me daily. Alot of plans in play, just I get everything done in spurts =p

I've never used a sprayer like that before so I cannot comment on how it performed based on others, but considering I have 0 time spent working with such guns it came out real well. It was really easy to use. I just watched a few videos and went at it. My only issue with the sprayer is, I wish it had a longer hose going to the vac unit. Sometimes it became a pain to move while dropping a even spray.

All in all, I'm happy with the results.

Agreed on spacers, been wanting them. I plan to get those when I get new tires, alignment etc etc. Some ways down the road as its a lower priority compared to other issues /projects

Looks good bro.
How long did you have to wait between the coats and do you have to worry about overspray? Thinking about doing it in my driveway. Want to do mine soon. Just gotta do some repairs first. Too much money to get it painted, so maybe a good alternate. Mine is white, wanna keep mine white and spray the plastidip clear over it.

Thanks!

Ah that is the glory of this paint. It is so forgiving. By the time I got to the other side of the car, it was ready for another coat at the start. It only took me maybe 1 hour and 15 minutes to put on 5 coats.

On the overspray, I only taped the front and rear windshield in the center area to not waste paint. Then I just sprayed everything, side windows, mirrors and lights. Then just peeled it off after 20 minutes from the final coat. I'm sure the paint will last, but even if it didn't, it is such a stupid simple job with quick pleasing results I wouldn't mind doing it again.
