So, for a while my power steering pump has been chirping at me, regardless of the tension I set on the belt. I was also hearing some noises from the water pump area (the PS pump on the ST is driven off the water pump)... Today, it started knocking somewhat loudly. So, I loosened the belt all the way, so it's not engaged and it doesn't seize and strain my water pump....
Does anyone have any suggestions where to get a new/refurbed power steering pump for a decent price? -------------------- 1989 Celica ST Automatic "King Cobra" -- 2005-2006

Guess I'm just gonna order a remanufactured pump for it, hopefully it'll show up soon. I'm too spindly to drive with un-powered power steering for very long!

have you tried running it without the belt to see where the sound is coming from? normally a PS pump groans. and those sounds can be from a pump or bad seals leaking in air.

Actually, it's funny you should say that. I just finished my rebuild a week or 2 ago, and yesterday was my 1st oil change (500 miles already!). So I cranked it up, and was opening the throttle up a bit by hand, and I heard knocking... I rebuilt the engine due to a rod knock, so my first thought was "oh no". I got my roommate to come out and take a look at it with me, and we listened at various spots on the engine with one of those stethoscopes (you know, with the metal rod instead of the membrane at the end). We didn't hear anything noteworthy anywhere on the head or the block, but it was super loud when we listened on the power steering pump (more accurately, to the reservoir which sits on top of the pump). Once I moved the pump so that the belt couldn't engage on it, we didn't get the knock any more. Assuming that the power steering system is the correct diagnosis, would you recommend changing out any parts other than the pump itself? -------------------- 1989 Celica ST Automatic "King Cobra" -- 2005-2006
