Hey guys, my celica is abnormally quick. I shift at 5500 typically but I just changed the clutch and my car takes off like a bat out of hell. I know I was driving it slipping before and it makes a difference but my other car is a 1982 camaro with a 350 and 345 horsepower (net) under the hood. I bought my celica from some kid who had the engine rebuilt because he blew it up and it has maybe 20k on it now, i've only driven it maybe a thousand miles.but everyone talks about how slow these cars are stock, mines really not. Had a friend pull it apart and he said the car isn't stock and as far as he can tell. He owned one for years, a 5th gen though and he said it's nowhere close to his. But all I can tell it has is a cold air intake....what the hell could they have done when it was rebuilt?ported the heads maybe?

My camaro has 420 ft/lb of toque. Trust me when I say this thing is pushing more than it should be. I know torque very well, I used to camaro to tow the celica home when the clutch blew XD.
Something is just...different. Haha It's messed up when I wanna drive this over my camaro, something about it.

Small world, I absolutely hate driving the Celica because it's a slug and am buying a F-body to replace it. tongue.gif

Make sure you don't buy one with a 305. Such a dog of an engine. I'd trade you if I could, you would love mine. Completely customized. Got offered a 65 impala in a trade, think im taking it.

I was booking 90 in third, wouldnt consider that slow....

agreed. So any input on why this thing could be so damn quick, it's still a 5sfe, possibly bored with upgrades? idk bought the damn thing for 500 bucks from a college kid with a slipping clutch

Mine will do 80 in third before it touches the red line, just takes forever to get there. Probably some 10 seconds to hit 60, versus a 4th gen F-body that'll do it in half that. So comparatively, the Celica is slow. Compare the Celica to a Yugo and it'd look like lightning in comparison. All about perspective, and seeing that every car I've owned before the Celica has been faster that makes it ungodly slow for me.

Also the LB9 with the M5 isn't too bad. Though if I'm going to go older I rather just go ahead and get a 79-81 model.

Take it to the 1/4 mile to find out if it is faster than stock for sure. Again it's all perspective. Out of curiosity is your Camaro automatic? Since you're more engaged it could seem faster than what it is. I wouldn't think boring would add much, even boring a V8 does little.

10 seconds? no....mine timed in at a little over 7. It redlines VERY fast, and my camaro is an auto, its 0-60 is under 6 seconds your right haha. It has a 2500 stall for street driveability. It's kinda irritating to shift so often actually, stop and go is hellish. I try to shift at 3k, but i'm just not that fast, it passes it too quickly. My idle is at 900- 1k btw. I know thats not normal.

With my other car being tire eating fast, its a wonder this thing doesnt seem like a slug to me.

But the mpg is so much better. tongue.gif The reason I got it, and I've decided gas isn't expensive enough to justify it. So time for something faster.

Bored out with advance timing possibly. High rpm at idle makes me think an advance in timing.

Oh youll realize it when your getting 12 mpg because you probably hammer your pedal in your celica. Youll do it by habit. Mine runs on 89 right now.

1400 when cold, yeah its pretty advanced timing id say. Dont see reason why, makes backing this thing up a bitch.

OH SNAP! I think that's a dare...

Momentai- It's entirely possible that your car has cams and the head has been ported/polished. Have you bad a chance to look around to see if you have a piggyback on the ECU?

Not yet, friend who replaced the clutch had a hell of a time getting the tranny out. pulled the whole engine to do it haha. He said it didn't look like his. What would a piggyback look like? When I got it I had the intention of a swap but the heads might be ported and polished with cams. could explain the 900-1k rpm idle and 1400 when cold (seriously high there). My celica should not have a higher idle than my camaro....just sayin.

Of course it should. Most 4 cylinders idle around 800 rpm, most 6 cylinders around 650 rpm, and most 8 cylinders around 500. At least that's been the general rule with all the cars I've had.

I think Idle also has to do with displacement.

My 750cc motorcycle idles at 1050, it just has less rotating mass to keep it going

Maybe all your cars have had idle issues then. Out of some 20+ cars encompassing all those engines that's what I've experienced.

It varies from car to car. My f150 idles around 550. My old mustang would idle around 700, both v8s.

My rally car idles at about 2800 rpms haha. May adjust that down a bit.

Like I said, out of some 20+ cars that's what I've noticed. Still, usually the larger the engine the lower the idle. Also the numbers I quoted were for cars with manual transmissions. Automatics generally idle 100-150 higher than their manual counterparts. Again from personal experience and reading service manuals. Really as long as it isn't idling at some ridiculously high rpm that'll harm the engine you're ok. I personally find the idle of a carbureted big block intoxicating. tongue.gif

So whos to say in your 20+ vehicles yours didnt have messed up idles? like he said it ranges from vehicle to vehicle. No need to be a dick.
You should see the 400 65 impala i'm getting, talk about an intoxicating idle......
