So Ive seen some cars, both on the road and on the interwebs, with regular license plats that have either been cut or folded so that all you can see is the numbers.
They look super classy, but I cannot find a whole lot of information on it. I was wondering if anybody else has ever done this themselves or heard of anybody who has? I got pulled over today for not having my front mounted so I need to get it on there asap, but If this is legal then I'd definitly be doing this pretty soon. I quickly grabbed these two pictures but I was more thinking of going for a look closer to the first one. If anybody has any input on their illegality please let me know! ![]() ![]() |

definitely not legal at all to alter your plates. Here in Canada anyways...assuming it would be the same everywhere else

Or live in a state that only requires the rear tag. Eh, I don't see why there would be a problem with it if the rear tag isn't modified. Easiest way to find out is to call your local DMV or police department. That or see if they have tags like they do overseas, where its some kind of adhesive banner. A lot of cars don't have spots for tags on the front, hence the aforementioned. Either way, it's something you need to check on with your local authority.

Alterations to your tag is the same as asking to be pulled over.

Where I live, apparenlty its more illegla to modify your plate than to not have a front plate at all.
I've had a ticket for no front plate, put it on and modfied it a bit, and haven't had issues yet, *knock on wood* I think this would probabyl city/state specific however. -------------------- -Protection mode, For when your amp tries to blow its load. 1995 Toyota Celica GTS - Daily Driver 1999 Chevy Cavalier - Winter Beater 1994 Honda Civic CX Hatchback - Dead My Celica! |

Our state doesn't have front plates, because cops don't have eyes behind their heads, but they sure love to a55 hug you for miles and miles to see if your drunk. |

We have to have a front plate here... but you don't have to have it in the OEM location. It can be anywhere as long as it's "Visibly mounted" and not modified (as the DMV charges you for the plates and you get money back for turning them in, in one piece).
So I dropped and tilted mine: ![]() ![]() -------------------- 1994 Toyota Celica GT-S 5S-FE 190k Miles. Project car 1992 Toyota Celica GT 5S-FE 170k Miles. Daily driver/beater 1999 Toyota Camry LE 5S-FE 216K Miles. RIP You will be missed. ![]() *ASE Certified General Manager |

@Diego, we all know you are the coolest, way to rub it in
![]() @jordisonjr, did you have to take your bumper off to mount yours like you did? @RabidTRD, yeah and I think that looks good on your car I just never really cared for how it looked when it was centered at all on mine. Hopefully I can figure smething out before nice mister motorcycle cop catches me doing the speed limit in a sports car again, and needs a reason to ticket me xD |

License plates are the State's property. You cannot modify them - legally.
With that said, I know a few people who have done it. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

In Texas it is illegal to cover any part of the word "TEXAS" at the top. Im not sure about the rest of the plate but I've heard of people getting ticketed for having those plastc license plate borders partially covering the plate.
Maybe call the DMV or city and ask? |

In NY state it's illegal to cover any part of your license plate. That being said, dealerships sell you a car with a plastic licence plate cover, covering part of the plate, with their name on it. I've never seen anyone get pulled over for licence plate frames.
