Hello, i'm just going to start off as im a complete noob but i will try my best to describe the problem i'm having, yesterday i bought a 96 gt celica convertible (for cheep) and i found out it has a running 3sgte in it. the problem i'm having is that it idles extremely rough. and will die unless i rev it up abit but while driving and my foot on the throttle it runs fine, when i'm coasting (foot off the throttle for awhile untill rpms go down) the car will die if i don't keep it my foot on the throttle, a side note it is a very cold day today so i'm not sure if its the dense air or it's something completely different. but it almost seems like it's not getting gas if i'm not mistaken. but again i'm a noob, any help would be greatly appreciated

Could be the IACV is completely clogged or seized, I'd look there first.

3S-GTE convertible? I think that might the first I've heard of anyone doing such, well at least in some time anyhow.

$250 or $2,500!? Either way that's a hell of a deal with the 3S-GTE... Going to be a lot of jealous people here now. tongue.gif Definitely try and clean it first, more often than not it just needs cleaning.

Should make a project thread when you have the time.

250, a mother sold me her sons car because he had moved and left it sitting in her yard for 3 years, and she handed me a perfect title and everything, it runs fine, just idles rough, also i just took a quick look at and i'm having a hard time finding the iacv also it needs wiring done, it looks really spotty, but it has been sitting for abit and for 250 i can't really complain.

You're extremely lucky, that is probably the deal of the year. Which you need to figure out which generation 3S-GTE it is, but either way it's worth way more than what you paid. The IACV is near the underside of the throttle body. Get the idle and wiring straightened up and you'll have a Hell of a car.

How can i tell what gen it is? Also, i cannot seem to find the iacv, i looked at some pictures online but where mine is is something completely different? but i will check where you mentioned on the throttle body, the picture i looked at was on the firewall Ps. did garret make a turbo to fit the 3sgte? thats the only indication i can find on the turbo.

It's better than what it came from the factory with. tongue.gif The second gen makes 200 hp, though it's easy enough to increase that. It's possible that they removed the IACV, for whatever reason, and have a block off plate on it.

Alright.. So next step would be to find a leak? And eventually i want to increase the hp on it, but not untill i give her what she needs.

A leak would cause idle to be high and not drop, you have the complete opposite problem. It's something to do with the IACV whether it's clogged, broken, or not even there.

The IACV is what's at the bottom with the three tubes.

Hard to tell, but it looks like it's not even there. You should have the three hoses and wiring there at the bottom going to the IACV. Odds are what happened is it went out and instead of spending the $200 to replace it they just used a block off plate and used the throttle to hold it at idle when out of gear.

Not a problem. For the time being what you could do is adjust the throttle to where it's stuck open just enough to keep it idling around 800 rpm.

Aw, thanks. It's ok I suppose, nothing compared to what others on here have though.

If it were me I'd start keeping an eye out on eBay for one.

Probably the easiest way would be to tighten the throttle cable up enough so that it doesn't let the throttle close all of the way.

Your car has a 2nd gen motor, but not air flow meter is visible in the picture. This means that its either missing, or the car is running on an aftermarket ecu that uses a map sensor.
You might want to investigate this further to solve your problem.

Also having the pipe from the turbo going directly to the throttle body is an extremely bad idea. You need some type of intercooler.

The guy who owned this car used to be on this site years ago, and made some really odd decisions (like the lack of intercooler) in his swap.

I put a 3s in my convertible..FYI smile.gif

I just found this thread, so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I've cleaned my IACV so it was functional again and I've seen others that are completely frozen and can't be taken apart to clean (even if soaked in lubricant).
