you can learn neat **** like this
7A-FE engine Low altitude -1219 m (4000 ft) or lower gear km/h (mph) 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 24 (15) 2 to 3 or 3 to 2 37 (23) 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 64/45*1 (40/28*1) 4 to 5 or 5 to 4 72/64*2 (45/40*1) *1: For constant-speed cruise or constant speed cruise after deceleration. High altitude -Higher than 1219 m (4000 ft) gear km/h (mph) 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 24 (15) 2 to 3 or 3 to 2 40 (25) 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 64 (40) 4 to 5 or 5 to 4 72 (45) 5S-FE engine gear km/h (mph) 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 24 (15) 2 to 3 or 3 to 2 40 (25) 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 64 (40) 4 to 5 or 5 to 4 72 (45) Downshift to the appropriate gear if acceleration is needed when you are cruising below the above downshifting speeds. Upshifting too soon or downshifting too late will cause lugging, and possibly, pinging. Regularly revving the engine to maximum speed in each gear will cause excessive engine wear and high fuel consumption Maximum allowable speeds To get on a highway or to pass slower traffic, maximum acceleration may be necessary. Make sure you observe the following maximum allowable speeds in each gear: 7A-FE engine gear km/h (mph) 1 56 (35) 2 93 (58) 3 134 (83) 4 182 (113) 5S-FE engine gear km/h (mph) 1 51 (32) 2 85 (53) 3 126 (78) 4 162 (101) Or maybe you've just never figured out how to work the seatbelts -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

The maximum speeds are higher if you take it into the red... *starts whistling* I'll have to check out the site later.

really I'd be scared to take first gear even to 32 mph, ...and you can shift down into 3rd if you're below 78?? fml, I mean if I'm on a 55mph 2 lane highway behind some retard doing 48 ill go to third and pass him, I guess that's only 3500 or so.
of course with mine nursing a bad head gasket I try not to run it over 3200 anyway This post has been edited by VavAlephVav: Jun 24, 2014 - 10:41 PM -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

On occasion I'd take it a little past the redline if I was in a hurry, I know I'd take second up to 60-62 before going to third or fifth. Normally I was a grandpa and took it to 3,000 and would skip fourth and go straight to fifth. I'm trying to remember if I ever used fourth outside of downshifting... Oh well.

I also have this little trick I use to get around the crunchy synchronizer, when I want to downshift to third I pull it to the Second spot real quick, but don't actually go all the way in just the opening of the fork to that spot, and then go up to third and it makes no noise.
and Ya I've generally got it in 5th by 35mph for everyday fuel economy driving. now if I could just get it to idle right. this weekend I think ill hit the pick-n-pull and get a new IAC and ill drill out the messed up screw on the old one, I freakn hate it when they use Philips screws for **** like that. Have you tried changing gear oil? Putting in a blend of 75-90W GL-4 and Syncromesh helped a lot with mine.
Oh a right angled screwdriver is your best friend when it comes to the brass screws on the IACV. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

I've found the Redline for around $18 a quart, but still... I hear that the Motorcraft synthetic gear oil is supposed to be even better.
