My buddy has a 94' Tercel and he installed a Japanese Paseo Turbo engine...it's a weird code...he said it was 5A-FE. I know that regular Paseo engines are 5E-FE like the one in the Tercel, but I'm pretty sure it's gotta be a 5A-FTE or 5E-FTE...I'm just guessing. He discarded the stock turbo and installed a custom manifold with a CT-26 out of a deuce. He's running 10 PSI on stock injectors and it hauls ASS. The turbo whistles very loud, but it starts spooling and pulling after 4500 RPM...don't know why. My 7A-FTE at 10 PSI felt stronger and pulled a lot earlier. That engine is less than 1.5 liter...maybe that explains why it feels weaker...also, my turbo is way bigger than the toyish CT-26. Anyway, the little engine has a lot of potential and a high redline...sometimes he went past 7000 RPM...it was very lovely. biggrin.gif What do you guys think? Obviously, it won't be too easy to swap if the engine is E series instead of A series. Anyway, I'm pretty pumped up about it...it's a rarity of engine and they have them readily available in Puerto Rico for $900 for engine and 5 speed tranny. wink.gif

i would think its an E... ive heard of a 5E, never heard of a 5A though... who knows... pretty sweet thouhg. and yea, the lesser displacement is gunna make the power at higher RPM.

Haha try a 5 speed Paseo...different story...FUN car to drive biggrin.gif. The thing is so light that the engine is peppy...the auto version is slow though. tongue.gif

Ya man it actually accelerates pretty good for its power. But cramming a pedal to the floor isnt all that fun fast or not tongue.gif and its funny you say peppy, thats what my mom says about cars that are quick haha

My first toyota was a 5-speed 93 paseo. The US paseos have the 5E-FE. Its 1.5L and makes between 93 and 102hp depending on the year. Fuel cut is at about 7300rpm. Its really not a great engine. Definitely not any better than a 7a. They should be super cheap, but not any cheaper than a 7a (800-900 should be easy to find).

Many times, how a turbo motor 'feels' on the street isn't a result of the engine itself at all, its a result of the quality of design of the turbo system and what its been optomized for.

It's funny how that little engine propels a Tercel to high 11's. There's a mechanical engineering college in Puerto Rico...I don't remember the name, I think it's Mech Tech...and they built a 5E-FE and slapped on a Microtech EMS. The only things that the engine has internal-wise is forged pistons, rods, and all the other details. The bottom end is completely stock. So yeah, like you said, it depends on how the setup is made and the quality of the design. smile.gif

Yeah there is such thing as a 5AFE, as my friend's Geo Prizm has this engine (it's a 95, 92-95 Corolla which is a Prism came with this engine), 1.5L. I have no clue about this turbo engine, and I'm interested in the engine code if you can find it.

just to let ya all know... 5a-fe is a lower version of the 4a-fe..... the 5a-fe is obvioiusly not a tercel engine (unless you account for the first few years of the tercels which had A series motors) seeing how they are E series engine

a 5a-fe has about 70-80hp at the wheels if you're lucky

I believe it's the 3EFTE or 5EFTE... i forget which exactly... but it's the late model Turbo Starlet engine...

Yeah, its truly crazy what can happen when there are no rules, lots of money, and a few smart guys.

In the late 80's (The 'Turbo era') in F1 the rules were pretty loose. Displacement was limited to 1.5L and there were an number of teams making upwards of 1100-1200hp from 1.5L. THAT is a LOT of boost. smile.gif

They also had some pretty crazy anti-lag systems. Some people joking called them 5-stroke engines because the anti-lag burned lots of fuel inbetween the head and the turbo to keep it spinning.

Hahaha 5 stroke tongue.gif

Yeah, I gotta go see that Tercel. There's a guy that has a 7M-GTE in a Paseo...drag monster biggrin.gif

I posted some pics of it months ago on celica.net...the turbo has iit's own air cowling on the side of the hood...it's pretty crazy. I'll get in touch with those Mech Tech guys to see what tips they can offer me...may be put some big Mech Tech stickers on my Celi and get it fast by them biggrin.gif

Cool...

I did a bit more study... and the correct engine codes for the EP82 and EP92 (turbo Starlets) are 3EFTE and 4EFTE, each at 1.3 liters and 1.4 liters respectively. Not high powered turbo engines, but in the little starlets, them things can fly... heheh...

Hey K, then the engine is 3E-FTE because he told me that it was 1.3 liters biggrin.gif

Haha, no wonder it spools that CT26 after 4,500 RPM tongue.gif

prizms came with a 4a-fe or 7a-fe.... unless you're talking about the ae92 prizm GSI... it came with a 4a-ge (and the later years it was the ONLY map based US 4a-ge!)

Hey all,
There are two engines, the ep82 and ep91(newer) starlets use the 4efte engine which makes in the neighborhood of 135 hp. The older starlets used the 3ete(think there is still one on ebay). The 4efte swap is popular with the tercel and paseo owners(I own a 92 tercel as well, and am in the process of doing this swap now). They are small engines but they have reliably held up to 20 lbs. of boost with a t3/t4 hybrid turbo(came factory with the ct-9 turbo, incredibly small). The swaps usually come with a 5-speed transmission as well and you can find the whole conversion for around a grand. I dont know if I would recommend them for the celica owners as the price involved in mounting new engine mounts, wiring, transmission etc. would put you in the price range of the 3sgte swap, and we all know what that is capable of. For more info check out www.tercelonline.com . Also, check out www.back-yard-productions.com There is info on the swap there.
Hope that helps.

I cant remember the code of the turbo, maybe CT-6? But my friend just finished swapping one into his Paseo and that little thing rips pretty good on only 6 p.s.i.

Hey there,
The factory turbo is the ct-9. Pretty small turbo. The engines are really cool though, and in a completely gutted tercel or paseo is a pretty sweet combination.
