Hey,
This weekend finally i had time (and my friend too) to work on my custom turbo Header. We started like 11.30 am, and both thought that this job will be easy... Yup, it wasnt... All thought about the design, everything that we where doing seemed wrong, and like spending WHOLE DAY just thinking how it has to be, BAM we finally worked somthing out. I wanted that piped of the header where as much equal as they could be. So, i hade to move my radiator in fron a bit, to have more place for my turbo. Anyway, pics say more that any word, so here ya go: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -------------------- Ex celica owner - just a guy from other side of the pond...

Adn i will update every step of my turbo project, so you guys can judge me, and tell me what im doing wrong, and that the other guys that was thinking about TURBOING 7A, could have as MORE info as they could ![]() Laterzzzzz.... -------------------- Ex celica owner - just a guy from other side of the pond...

probably too late to mention..... seeing how you have the pipes routed... (but would still be a good idea because of turbo heat)....
i would say get an oil filter relocation kit & move it away from there.... will give you more room and the oil filter won't be around the turbo |

I dont' know if it was clear in the pics that I sent you, but all the 7a manifolds that I've seen angle the turbo slightly for clearance. My turbo flange is angled about 10-15deg relative to the engine. Looking pretty good so far.

I'v moved my radiator in front, to get more clearance, and now my turbo has enouth place (im still thinking about geting bit smaller radiator and moving it way in fron to get even more place, and to avoid heat). But still not sure. Im still thinking how to get the turbo flange on, cuz the space between the pipes is not that small...... ![]() And ya, my friend didnt used mask, cuz he could see anything with it ![]() ![]() -------------------- Ex celica owner - just a guy from other side of the pond...

The longer the lines, the bigger posibility them to blow.. (thats what i think), and i dont have a need to move it to the fender, i need like 4 cm lower then it is now, and the clearance will be good. -------------------- Ex celica owner - just a guy from other side of the pond...

"Looking excellent so far, just like the exterior."
I noticed you did the Exterior first, and also other people have as well. Is there any reason why one should do the exterior before engine work or interior work? I always thought it was better to work inside out to avoid any dings or scratches to paint or body. Of course you would be more careful if you're doing it yourself but what about a body shop? |

I might be interested in getting one, but I've got a few questions. What type of turbo flange are you putting on it, like what turbo will bolt up? Does the 350 include shipping (if it doesn't about how much do you think that would be)?
Also, I'd like to see how everything fits in once you get everything put together and on the engine. Everything looks awesome though, keep up the incredible work. This post has been edited by BigEdge169: Mar 8, 2004 - 8:33 AM |

Here is the deal... i talked to one guy here, he has VW Corrado with like 450hp and stuff, he made these things before, and so on. He looked at my header and ya know what... He told it was made WRONG... So im kinda sad, cuz i trust this guy... First thing is that pipes diameter is to big to spool up turbo quick... Second, i did the BIG mistake shaving the welding marks... It will crack in these places then it will be hot... So... I think this header must go..... Going to give it another try this weekend with the smaller pipes, will see what happends...

Actually the second flange, and the second header that i will make will go on to the other 6GC member from Italy, to Edo, so thats why i made 2 flanges. Another thing, i checked the JGStools page for piping and seems that they use the same diameter, so huh? I think everything is ok with the diameter of pipes, ofcorse its a bit bigger then the stock, but i think i will try to work somthing out with this... in my opinion the bigger diamter is bit better i think then the too small. In that case i need the expert opinion, SpeedToe, Zip, OOBE, 97SC come one guys, i need your help!!!!! well... I'm no expert but.... the pipe size for the exhaust system has always been proportional to the amount of power you will be making. More power equals more exhaust pressure so it really just depends on the hp numbers your looking for. Also the type of turbo has alot to do with it as well. I'd recomend a t3/t4 hybrid. I hear tons of good things about them. but like I said, I'm no expert. Just going off the things I've read.

Yeah something else you have to think about dogman is obviously the length of the pipes, both from the manifold to the first join (4-2), and from there to the downpipe (2-1).
I have heard that the primary pipe length should be fairly long and as straight as possible to help pull the exhaust out, but obviously with ur turbo sitting there it will be a different story. A good couple of pics from a lancer: Stock: ![]() New Header: ![]() CRX (4 to 1): ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by KAMiX: Mar 16, 2004 - 11:15 PM |

I think your diameter is probably ok, it might not be optimal, but its really hard to do something like that and make everything work perfectly. It usually takes several attempts. The only thing I see wrong is you should have welded the pipes to the turbo flange before welding them to the header. In fact, you should always start at the flanges and work your way toward the middle. There are a number of reasons for this. First off, you can control the entry/exit angles of the tubes so that they point at the turbine the way you want, and exit the engine at the correct angle. And secondly, and almost more importantly, you can weld up the area inbetween the tubes on the turbo flange. Its really tough to do and I think its probably a lot easier if you have more room.

Well, got some updatres for ya guys
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, now i have plenty of space for my downpipe and for other stuff. It was paint in the A$$ to get the fan in fron of radiator, cuz i already moved my radiator in fron like a 1 inch, so i hade to remove it again, and hade to remove some bars that hold up hood lock... but, the result is good. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fianally, i got my IC installed ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And got my GT4 fuel pump installed. Practicly it wasnt hard job, everything on GT4 fuel pump is the same as on ours, but the GT4 fuel pum is a bit longer, so the outlet of the pump must be shortenet a bit. It is working now good ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And here it is my lonely Turbo & manifold, laying around in my room, waiting to be installed ![]() Well, soon gonna post more stuff, but for now thats it ![]() -------------------- Ex celica owner - just a guy from other side of the pond...

Well I dont mean to bash but there are 2 things that I wanted to ask before you run this thing first is the what is the exhaust size of the turbo that you are going to run also what kinda Hp. are you looking to make? Because thermal expansion can fracture the header bolts so over size those also the flang can warp under high temp. this will break welds cutting the flang will help with this problem.. this is for high Hp. apps.
Smooth, constant velocity is what you want I do have one other question what is the thickness of your tubeing it could be a problem. As for the down pipe figure 10% larger than turbine outlet diameter. also when you weld the down pipe flange weld in 1/2" increments that will help. I hope that helps you out |

Exhaust size is 48. Air side is 42. The Hp im aiming is about 200 hp to the wheels. The flange thickness is about 2.3 cm. The thickness of header pipes walls is about 3 mm. Only thing that im woried about is the welding places, but it was welded TWICE in thoses places, and i think on that HP rating it will hold on good.
