My check engine light came on and I tested it. I got a code 12. I've researched it a bit and I think it means that no RPM signal going from the distributor to the ECU. Is that correct? How would I fix this?

+1. That's what it was when I had a code 12. It took out the coil as well. I was broke at the time, so I grabbed a junkyard distributor and a new coil. All was well after that. Check under the cap first as was mentioned above.

Ok I'm sure I need a distributor. Which brand should I go with Cardone or BECK/ARNLEY ?
