Question here:
It looks like you could conceivably remove the engine without really touching the AC compressor by just removing the two bolts and then sort of tying up the compressor to the radiator (carefully, of course).

Has anyone tried this? Or should I just suck it up and get the system drained so I can remove it at will?

I tied it with a couple of shoe strings and a piece of long metal wire to the radiator support. It's been there for at least 2 months now and it hasn't fallen down yet
