Could just be a matter of needing a tuneup. Check compression across the cylinders, if that checks out the engine is fine and it's something menial.

Could just be a matter of needing a tuneup. Check compression across the cylinders, if that checks out the engine is fine and it's something menial. ^definitely a good place to start, as bad compression ends this discussion. After that if you've got a little money start with the basics of a tune up. Good oil change, spark plugs, wires, maybe a distributor (be sure to check timing). If after the tune up you still have problems, I'd say check for a sensor that is going bad and causing it to go haywire. My guess... o2 sensor, mass air flow or maybe throttle position sensor just to name a few that come to mind.
