I took the throttle body off yesterday and cleaned it out. I was hoping to get the idle speed control system working right and had bought new gaskets for the throttle body and ISC beforehand.
I have a 5sfe which I believe to be from a 98+ Camry because of they cut a chunk of the transmission cover away to fit the different oil pan. and what I found today is that the intake and throttle body are different gaskets for the camry and celica, so the gasket I got from Toyota wasn't right and I had to pick up a throttle body gasket for a celica from Advance auto(some crappy felpro paper thing :|) Actually I couldn't get the ISC off because one of the Philips screws was ruined, so I settled for just cleaning it out by spraying cleaner down the holes. The lesson I learned the hard way is that the little valve controlled by the rod that runs through it only works one way, and not flipped around the other way on the little slot where the bimetal spring is. /shrug anyway, I have a Toyota manual on PDF for the 5fse 3sge, motor, not for the whole car but it has all the major engine systems. In the Engine section they describe how to adjust the Idle speed, the diagram shows there is a round cap, and adjustment screw underneath, on the top right corner of the throttle body- between the TPS and the EGR kinda. But I Do not have this cap on mine and no other thing that looks like any kind of adjustment screw. So how do you set the Idle speed with this one? is it supposed to be completely automatic? I do think I got some improvement on the way the idle acts now that I cleaned it out, but it still doesn't want to idle like its supposed to. It want's to idle around 12-1500 until you goose it and it will drop down more around 700 like it should be. I set up the throttle opener and throttle stop the way the book said and the throttle opener is sucking back out of the way and not holding the throttle open. I calibrated the TPS the way the book described with an ohmmeter, but I used a razor blade between the throttle stop instead of a .5mm feeler gauge. I hope that's close enough. heres the picks of my setup, should there be an idle adjust screw here at the top right? the book I have shows diagrams of mr2's and celicas that have pop-up headlights, so that may be a bit old, but maybe also this throttle body is not the original 94 5sfe anyway? If anybody knows how to set-up the idle speed please let me know. thanks ![]() ![]() ![]() -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

and I wonder if I can find some more info on how the valve itself is put together. The magnet coil reads(ohms) just what it says it should, the valve and rod turns freely, and on the other end there is a bi-metal spring with an adjustable position.
and there is a tiny hexkey set screw on the bottom. I took the spring off and looked at the way it was setup on the inside. and when I put it back together I just matched the cover with the old dirt marks so it would be like it was before. I wonder now if I should experiment with different positions of the bi-metal spring and see how that effects the idle. it has something to do with the coolant lines running through there and when it warms up the spring expands and adjusts it slightly. in fact I'd guess it should be that once that spring heats up the action of it expanding should reduce the air flow to bring the idle down more. oddly it seems like my idle gets higher once its warmed up. -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.
