in and attempt to get a rusty, stuck, and almost stripped bottom bolt out of the piping to replace my thermostat, I unscrewed a piece on top of what I think was the A/C unit. Pressure was released. What did I just do?

and hopefully you didn't breath the refrigerant in cause you could die....well get kind of sick.
