So I just purchased a 94 celica st that was swapped with the 3sgte from an st205 gt4. At the moment it's running a manual trans from a 98 4cyl Camry. I know these don't hold up to power very well but I'm blown away by the fact that they hold up at all. I guess this transmission has been holding up for 4 years which I think is crazy. So I'm just wondering what other options I have for inexpensive tranny setups that don't require too much modification. Also, if I were to get another Camry transmission, what model years should I look for? (As I said the current tranny is from a 98). The current one is finally starting to let go (it appears to be having issues with the 4th to 5th synchro as it grinds going into 5th sometimes and pops out of 5th as well.
Any info would be much appreciated. This is my first post on here and I must say this page looks very well put together! Thanks in advance |

Any with a 5S-FE, so '90-99 Celica GT and '92-01 Camry/Solara. The Camry/Solara uses the S51, the 5th gen Celica GT uses the S53, and the 6th gen Celica GT uses the S54. The main thing with how well a gearbox holds power is mostly in the operator, if you don't abuse it and maintain it a S series should last you just fine. Hell there's been gorillas trash a T-56 in stock, or mostly stock, F-bodies and Corvettes even though it's rated well above their torque output at 450 ft lbs. Then on the flip side the WRX 5-speed is known for being made of glass, but there are examples with plenty of miles on the original transmission because the owner wasn't a gorilla. So your mileage may vary applies here to an extent.
