well my check engine light came on so to make a long story short i found out i need an air temp sensor, what happens if i drive around with this broken, any short or long term damage. how much can this cost to get fixed?

your ecu will be annoyed... that's about it.... (also, it may be thinking the air coming in is too cold or too hot... and sending fuel as such)
