first off overhead cam engines do not have rocker arms. check your timing mine did the same thing and it was due to the timing being off a bit. If you don't know how to do it just take it to the shop 'cause you gotta bypass something or the computer will just compensate for whatever changes you make.

Actually, it depends on the particular brand and model of engine, there are lots of overhead cam engines with rocker arms, single overhead cam will almost always have some type of rocker setup. My wife's 280SE Mercedes was double overhead cam with rocker arms...all depends on the engineer's design...
The double overhead cam 5SFE and 7AFE do NOT happen to have them. They use shims between the cam and valve tip, pull the valve cover and use a feeler gauge to check the clearance, easy enough to check, you can copy the procedure from the library ref manuals, have to pull the cams to change shims if they are out of spec on clearance...I'd invest in a new valve cover gasket and check it myself, if it needs adjusted, you can always take it to the shop if you dont want to do it yourself.

As far as the noise, thats a good possibility, could also be a loose heat shield, or pinging from low octane fuel. or any number of things...
