In my opinion, those tests are all BS,,,if you dump enough "fine particle" stuff on an oiled filter, it will of course eventually coat all the oiled surface so some stuff doesn't get trapped, but in the real world, no one would let it go that long, I have used foam air filters for years, they are the only thing I could use in my VW powered dune buggy, paper lasted about 3 days off-road, K&N not much longer, they would choke down so bad it was like driving with the choke stuck on, The foam ones (Amsoil) could go months with no problems, and no wear. They are one of the main reasons I eventually became an Amsoil dealer. As far as allowing wear or harming the air-flow sensor, I ran my 87 Mazda 626 for 162K miles with a foam air filter (and Amsoil synthetic oil) - NO problems. Lost all the water and cracked the head at 162k. When I took it apart, I couldn't measure any wear in the cylinders. the old rings were .003 out of spec, .017 in., limits were .008-.014. (the NEW aftermarket rings were .018!!!, had to buy OE Mazda rings - which were .011 exactly mid-spec, NO measurable wear in the cylinders )
So they can say whatever they want, I will still use the Amsoil foam air filters.
Reminds me of the old door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesmen, they would dump their "test dirt" under the rug and show how their vacuum could suck it up right thru the rug! then if you bought the unit, they would throw in a new bag cause they were nice, in reality it was to get their extra-special super fine laboratory test dirt back so they could re-use it on the next sucker.
