Ok to my understanding i will need a stand alone ecu in order to make a 3rd gen 3sgte pass emissions in the states. Now i dont know exactly what this entails. If someone could explain this to me that would be great. What all goes into a stand alone ecu, how will this effect the engine itself. And are there any other routes that i should consider. Thanks for your time.

The 3rd gen is a nicer engine, however it was never in the US, so your mechanic wont know much about it, and aftermarket support is slim to none. The 2nd Gen is just as capable IMO. The 3rd gen is stock 12psi and the 2nd Gen is 8. Basically why theres a difference in HP.

A stand alone ecu completely replaces the existing ecu. These can be programmed and changed using a laptop and are quite useful, if not necessary for increase performance. I dont even think u'd be able to find a stand alone made for the 3rd gen 3sgte. With this you would not have annoyances like speed cut, boost cut, and rev limiter. Unless you wanted to.
